BK stays at ND

College football is a business. This could simply be good business on BK's part. Obviously, he is going to get more money by interviewing for this job.

But that will not stop me from worrying. It has been noted, BK is a climber. The next few days are going to be interesting to follow but I think we will see BK back as ND's coach. If he were to leave I would be devastated and the long term effect would SUCK for recruiting.

I think this class is pretty tight-knit though, so I don't think there would be a lot of decommits. If a bunch of the class leaves, can you blame them? They have to look out for themselves (though ND is an excellent school so they would have it very good there). I guess we will find out what the coaches have been selling- themselves and football or the university as a whole. Tweets from recruits are indicating the coaches have been selling the school.

My biggest problem is timing. I understand that the job is open now and may not be open a week from now. But, he has 7 18-year olds who are 3 days from early enrollment.

I'd want to resolve this issue before they show up to school, so quickly. With him going on vacation, does it get resolved before Monday? It doesn't sound like it.

If BK leaves I will have lost a little respect for him. I understand interviewing for other jobs and listening, but I just don't feel that after three seasons and one good season you leave a program. I don't think that is enough time to stabilize a program, and the thought of using ND as a stepping stone to the NFL rubs me the wrong way.

Also if he leaves it makes that "We are ND" locker room speech seem like a complete joke. That's the things I think about when I hear this.

Plus then you'd have to change your name and that would suck for all of us

I'm just happy we have Swarbrick/Jenkins and not White/Malloy. I have faith this will be resolved and Kelly deserves the contract. A strong ND football program brings in so much money for the university.

As Lax mentioned earlier, there's never a "good" time to do this. He interviewed the day after our season ended, and a full month before NSD. I expect Swarbrick will get this wrapped up ASAP to minimize fallout with recruits.

Dozens of reporters have spent the past few hours pursing through Kelly’s comments about the NFL in the days leading up to the title game. Kelly didn’t dismiss anything, but merely said he’s completely focused on the job at hand. But with the Irish now finished with the season and a 12-1 season putting Notre Dame back on the map, the timing is perfect for Kelly to leap to a high paying NFL gig or secure a handsome extension from Notre Dame and athletic director Jack Swarbrick.

Talking to a few people in and around the program, there was a feeling that those contract discussions had already begun, with an announced extension sooner than later. That’s what makes the timing of these NFL reports a bit worrisome for Irish fans. If there ever was a reminder that Kelly had climbed from his last two jobs after three seasons, this was certainly it.

That said, it bears mentioning that the last time a Notre Dame coach saw even a sniff of NFL interest, he received a ten-year contract extension that’ll continue to be paid out for the next half-decade. And with Kelly gone from his perch at Notre Dame and unreachable for the next few days, never was there a better time for the popular coach’s representative to float a rumor to NFL reporters, adding some urgency to Swarbrick’s timetable. One senior level NFL executive told me that’s exactly what he thinks is currently happening.

An extension could also come in handy if Kelly was hoping to get his assistants paid. With Bob Diaco and Chuck Martin’s names floating across a few team’s wish lists, contract extensions and pay bumps could help keep Kelly’s staff intact after replacing three coaches last season.

With Signing Day less than a month away, Kelly’s situation will likely be resolved by January 12, when a recruiting dead period ends. From there, it’ll be a sprint to the finish line for the Irish staff, who will go to work locking down a class that’s already ranked No. 1 by Rivals.

I, for one, think this is like many have said a move for leverage.

I love BK as much as anyone on this board, but I just can't imagine how an NFL team would think he would be the right fit, especially a team with the expectations and insane situation that the Eagles have.

Right now at least, he's just not an NFL kind of guy. He's a rah rah coach, a "my way or the highway" guy. His style would not at all sync with 30 year olds, it's tailored for 18-21 year olds.

If I know that, it's hard to imagine NFL owners don't.

My conspiracy theory is that, while the Eagles may have minimal interest, BK's agent knows someone in their management and worked this out to get some more cheddar.

BK and the rest of the coaches will be on the horn to our recruits tomorrow to tell them everything is fine. (We might not know for a few days though.)

1. Kelly interviewed with the Eagles
2. Most experts think this is a business/negotiating tactic for Kelly to get a raise and extension from ND
3. Kelly leaving is not good for the program from any standpoint
4. No one knows what's going to happen

The same people that are saying he's likely gone, or are worrying the most, are the people that think we'd get Urban or Stoops to replace him. Let that sink in. Think this through logically, consider the sources, and remember that we just came off a poor performance in the MNC when Kelly was trying to negotiate a new deal. It's just leverage for money, and if I'm wrong then strike me dead. I would be shocked as hell.

...In the NFL...how much teaching does a coach do? I think THAT is important. NFL coaches define an offensive philosphy, a defensive philosophy, then build an organization around those, he motivates, he evaluates, he does the very CEO routine BK rejected this year....But ask yourself, what of those tasks can he not do extremely well...

IF he's smart he will have heard, and taken to heart Saban's comments recently...and hope he still relishes teaching, because if/when BK decides to go, he'll be a monster in the NFL as well.
