Jack Swarbrick Q&A: Kelly will be back - Notre Dame - Scout

Apparently BK is staying, what changes need to happen to improve this team?

Obviously a DC needs to be hired, hopefully one that can and will recruit, and S&C needs improvement. Recruiting? Yes. Player development? Yes.

A great DC. Absolutely.
Also stronger leadershipon the team itself. That was really lacking this year (not blaming the captains, per se, we just had such a void from all the players who left after 2015). This season wasn't all on the coaches.

To PLAC... one more year like '16 and a checkbook.

To win 9 games? Jimmy Lake of Washington.

Whatever is needed to be done by BK will not happen. We need some new voices around the program IMO. If Kelly is to be successful here moving forward then he needs to hire someone from outside his circle and let them do their job.

IMO nothing will change because BK is arrogant and thinks that his way was not the problem this season that it was the players that lead to an off year.

Just disappointed that we have to watch another year of mediocrity!

The impossible:

BK has to ADMIT he has a problem, and MORE IMPORTANTLY admit he NEEDS HELP.

Seriously WTF. This dude is like a severe alcoholic vehemently screaming "I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM!" while making as ass of himself for the 12th weekend in a row.

The program needs a fundamental shift in many aspects of how they conduct business. Even the most out of touch person can see what they are.

BK is willfully ignorant, and until he swallows his pride (how the man has any pride at this point is beyond me), reaches out to others to help correct the daily mistakes being made, this turd will continue to swirl around the bowl before disappearing.

Sad to say, but Kelly needs to establish an identity, structure and scheme for both sides of the ball.

When he brought Diaco with him they ran a defense Kelly knew and wanted. Then, maybe because of his NFL aspirations, he brings in a whole new attacking, "complex" scheme that fell on its face. What kind of D do you want?

When he brought in Sanford to "turn the room on it's head" (or whatever it was) all it seemed to do was add another cook to the kitchen. It wasn't Sanford's offense. It looked, by and large, to be the same as it ever was. Maybe a few more gimmick plays. An offense that's always had an identity crisis. A power spread? Meh. I guess. I still think they should pair down some of what they do. Since day one the pre-snap hurrying, checking, audibles have been maddening.

Finally, practice harder and tougher. The offensive linemen are individually coached up to NFL level, yet they barely move guys when it matters. The tackling stinks. Stop practicing up-tempo 7-on-7 Chip Kelly-style. This isn't the NFL. These are young guys who still need all the physical practices to develop their basic skills. It was a Weis problem, too.

Let Sanford call the plays. He's the most under utilized asset in the history of anything. Fire Paul Longo, and hire an enthusiastic DC (even if it's not the best DC), because we need an anti-Kelly on this program..someone exciting that can let the players have fun and recruit. A ST coach also.

Just promote Make Elston to DC, that should fix it.

#RTDB by tweaking a few things:

-No more dedicating 2/3 of practice to the passing game (per MF). Spend equal time on the run scheme
-FIRE LONGO and fix S&C. There's no excuse for our o-line struggling against a much smaller Navy DL.
-Install a mentality that we are going to be tough and physical
-Stop abandoning the running game early.
-Adjust the "fuck it, I'm going deep" playcalling

I have no idea if any of this is realistic, but it's what i'd like to see, personally.

I like this. Run first type of toughness mentality. I don't believe it's in Kelly's DNA.

-- Make a good hire at the DC (outside of the program)
-- Get rid of Booker
-- Have 1 offensive play caller
-- Realize that if you have a team kicked down (i.e. 17-0 vs. Virginia Tech) keep kicking them down until they can stop you; other teams do it to us
-- Hope that you have someone step up as a leader
-- Put a team on the field that can play consistently for 4 quarters.

--good, outside, hire at DC that can recruit. One who is younger with energy, or older with a clear track record of toughness and performance.
--whoever the above is, it needs to be a D scheme that will allow the ballers to ball. Nothing so complex that it requires 3-4 years to understand the scheme.
--BK to swallow his pride and realize small tweaks won't do it.
--Use the tight end, and new focus on running.
--Let Sanford call the plays
-- New S&C, and ST coaches.
--Learn how to make second half adjustments
--and a new identity with toughness, swag, and fun....

Would prefer a new coach, but if he's staying, the above is what's needed.

I'm not getting all of the love for Sanford in this thread.

We know that the offense was averaging 40+ points and 400+ yards a game, before BVG was fired.

We know that Kelly became much more involved on the Defensive side of the ball, after BVG was fired.

It's very reasonable to assume that Kelly gave up some of his time with the offense, to spend that extra time with the defense.

It's also very reasonable to assume that Sanford, whose title includes Offensive Coordinator, was given much more control of the offense, in Kelly's reduced time.

We know that the offense performed worse as the season progressed. Why shouldn't we assume that Sanford had a large part in that?

I don't have anything against the guy, but it's not an unreasonable assumption to make, that the Offense dropped off when Sanford was given more control of it.

I understand the Sanford love (like the back up QB) but I don't know how much Sanford did this year? Last year he prepared Kizer-but to what degree...? I'd like to find out more about what he actually did before handing the reigns to him.

I think we need to see him "in his own" before passing judgement. If he calls truly his own plays and doesn't cut it, then get rid of him. But I don't think we have seen him in a situation where he's been given the latitude. Until them, I don't think any of us can say either way. Until them, blame BK>..

After watching Championship Weekend...I'm convinced we need bigger/faster/more nasty players. Bama gave up zero rushing yards to Florida...we have none of that.

Our D has had that problem ever since Lou. With the exception of a few special players off and on sprinkled in throughout the years, we've been

No hes not:

Fisher: 173–163–1 (.515)
Kelly: 112-53-0 (.679)

And that's not even including GVSU where Kelly was 118–35–2 (.771), so stop being so hyperbolic.

You can't compare them from a wins/loss record because it's not an apples to apples comparison. I made the comment because in my opinion they are both incredibly over rated, have not lived up to the hype, and continue to receive chance after chance despite mediocre results. Kelly is 59-31 at Notre Dame. I don't care about his record at GVSU, Central Michigan or Cincy.

I believe we have the talent - I believe it was the scheme and the support.

Proceeds to respond to posts in the thread he is complaining about...

Brian Kelly is the Jeff Fisher of college coaches....

Jeff Fisher is going to have losing seasons in 16-22 years as a NFL head coach.

Out of 27 years as a HC, Kelly has had 2 losing seasons. 2!!!!!

Of course there's a qualifier......NFL to NCAA isn't an apples to apples comparison yet you made it anyways. Then you point out wins and losses after saying that doesn't count in comparison...
