BCS or Bust in 2013?

Yeah, but after the lead...

However, industry sources believe there would be some last-minute re-negotiations between bowls to make room for Notre Dame. A bowl could "pay off" a conference by allowing the bowl to take Notre Dame instead of a team from the conference it's affiliated with.

"I'm guessing there would be some bowls who would look to redo deals at the last minute to get Notre Dame," a source said.

A few major CFB reporters were deriding that article on Twitter a couple days ago. This has always been the case for ND in the BCS era.

This is the first time we used our out within the given time frame and were staring a possible shut door in the face though correct???

A bowl eligible Notre Dame team will get left out?

Wait, is their any other bowls besides BCS bowls? A lot of rival fan bases think we'll be 6-6 this year due to the loss of Teo and Eifert et al.

The "technical issue" is that we're considered as being like a Big East team until 2014. The babble has therefore been: what if a 10-2 Notre Dame team isn't eligible for a BCS bowl, will all the other larger bowls be already gobbling up the conference teams, and are filled up? The only commentary I've seen on this just laughed, like "are you serious?" The idea that a big bowl with conference-affiliated wiggleroom wouldn't know WAY ahead of time that ND was going to "just miss" and not negotiate for the BIG TV payday [plus ticket sales], is Twilight Zone hilarious.

Last year was the first time, but we didn't need it. And like last year, I was never worried, regardless of the BCS bowls. With 3-4 teams ineligible last year for bowls b/c of sanctions, and so many teams being below .500, I knew we'd get a bowl if we wanted one. And we could have, easily. Shoot, Georgia Tech had to apply to get a bowl invite and they got into the Sun Bowl.

This is the LAST think we have to worry about, b/c as has been said already on this thread, if ND wants a bowl game, they'll get into a bowl game, and won't be a bottom feeder either...

I mean... With this group it is BCS is or bust, anything less would be a travesty.

I've always wanted to personally attend to the Beef O' Brady Bowl though. Bucket list item and something that would look great on a resume.

Exactly. This team isnt focused on making it to a bowl anymore. The path is clearly laid out. Massive injuries is the only reason I can think of that would prevent ND from make a BCS game. Drinking the kool aid? Hell no. They are coming off a Natl Title appearance, with a ton of talent coming back.

Mel Kiper Jr. went through every single position among potential 2014 NFL draft prospects, ranking them Nos. 1-5. Notre Dame had a strong presence in his latter lists, some coming as big surprises and others not so much.

The obvious? That would be Louis Nix, whom Kiper tabs as his top defensive tackle . Saying that the Jacksonville, Fla., native is likely to play at more than 340 pounds this season, Kiper calls Nix a good player who has the chance to a great one.

Also catching Kiper's eye from the defensive side of the ball are Bennett Jackson and Ishaq Williams, each of whom makes his next-man-up lists following the top-five cornerback and top-five inside linebacker rankings, respectively. He says that Jackson is the Irish's best corner and should have another great season this fall , while he expects Williams — who is entering his junior season — to break out after the ballyhooed prospect has seen increased playing time the past two seasons .

Kiper ranks the top five offensive linemen in one group, regardless of position, before looking at the next guys up at each respective position, with returning Irish captain Zack Martin coming in at No. 4 among tackles .

The biggest surprise may come in the tight end rankings, where Kiper lists Ben Koyack in his next-man-up group, saying that the junior will make his mark this season without Tyler Eifert ahead of him .

Earlier last week, Kiper had Stephon Tuitt and Aaron Lynch among his best defensive end prospects. You can see all of his position breakdowns here .

Colleague Travis Haney, meanwhile, calls the Irish the 10th-most talented team in the nation , using a formula devised from Mark Schlabach's post-spring Top 25, Kiper's top 50 draft prospects and positional prospects and the past four years of ESPN's recruiting rankings.

This is a non-issue, if for no other reason than it is predicated on each of the conferences completely filling out their bowl affiliations. The odds of every conference doing that are so astronomical that Stephen Hawking, himself, said, "Seriously?!!!"

Allstate Sugar Bowl (SEC champ vs. BCS at-large)
Jan. 2, 2014 -- New Orleans
Projection: Georgia Bulldogs vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Bulldogs have one of the best offenses in the country with nine returning starters, led by four-year starting quarterback Aaron Murray. The inexperienced defense will get better as the season progresses, and the Bulldogs will win the SEC East for the third straight season thanks to a key win over South Carolina in Week 2. With Alabama playing in the national championship game, the Sugar will take the SEC's second-best team.

The Fighting Irish are a deeper and stronger team than last season's edition despite the loss of quarterback Everett Golson and linebacker Manti Te'o. The schedule is brutal as always, as they play six potentially ranked teams, but they do get key games against Michigan State, Oklahoma and USC at home. The Irish will get to 10 wins and grab an at-large bid.

I'll drink to that!

I like to think we would have matched up much better against Georgia than 'Bama last season, but who can say?

Right? That was a question I threw around for weeks after the BCSCG, but a guy slips, a team falls, or Teo grows up in front of the country.... Who knows....

What makes Ga tough is the fact that if you play them you have to have lockdown corners because they have two talented rb's that will force you to respect the run. Then you got Murray who can pick you apart throwing - hence the need for lockdown corners. A DL that can pressure Murray without having to resort to a zone type blitz makes him a slightly above average QB instead of a great QB. This is why he is knocked for not winning the "big" game. Teams that can do those things can beat Ga. JMO on Ga.

Give me the ACC champ or Big 12 champ instead. I'd also take a Rose Bowl spot if Stanford or OSU go to the NCG.

This is why I go back on forth on whether we would have performed better against Georgia. Our secondary was a major liability for us last year, so Murray might have shredded us. Then again, we were damned good against the run (save 'Bama of course), and our DL was 2nd to none in getting pressure against QBs without resorting to blitzing.

How good was Georgia's OL compared to 'Bama's? In my mind, that's where 'Bama clearly outclassed us, and everything else fell apart as a result.

I do think Bama's OL was better (yes I am a homer). I do think the Irish would have been able to get a better push up front against the Dogs and this would have allowed the Irish to keep a safety to help out over the top. That could have tipped the scales in your favor in the end.
