Nick Saban:
“I think that the SEC was the SEC
because of the culture in the South. There wasn’t professional football in the South for a long time, and everybody related to the colleges. Well, now that doesn’t matter,” Saban added. “I mean, kids grew up wanting to go to LSU, Alabama and
Georgia.
Got the money now. They don’t mind going to Ohio State. They don’t mind going to other places.
“So, that geographic advantage that the Southeast Conference may be changing a little bit now, with the different culture, with NIL and the money involved in decision-making. I think that’s
created a bit of an edge for the Big Ten.”
Southern culture? If he means "fuck the rules" culture, sure, that helped, but it was simple demographics, Nick, not primarily culture. They had the local talent all along. First they had to integrate their universities and football teams, then they had to learn to win.
I don't think anybody ever "minded" going to Northern powers.
Does the Big Ten have the NIL advantage over the SEC? I'd be surprised. The Big Ten has plenty of mediocre to bad programs who likely spend relatively little. There was a brief moment in time when my Spartans had a couple sports crazy billionaire alums supporting the teams, but the NBA put an end to that. Now they're among the poors, too. It seems Nick thinks the modern Big Ten is eighteen Oregons.
