This was a comment over on Bleacher Report:

Well, Golson had 6 fumbles and 6 picks with only 12 TDs vs. Cement Foot's 13 turnovers with TWENTY SEVEN TDs. So, Zaire will replace Golson's "deer in the headlights" routine and lead the team to victory for the next three years.

From previous posts, Golson had a great year leading the team to the national championship game 2 years ago. Any idea of what period of time the above quote was referring to?

Key words here are Bleacher Report.

It is particularly misleading. Written by those not blessed with, intellectual capacity.

The offense that Kelly ran for Golson in '12 set records for low scores. Defense was dominant, and brought home the victory.

Tommy's stats were clearly great until everyone figured out he couldn't move.

He achieved great things against AFA, WF, etc. Not so much against Stanford and USC.

It’s the first Friday of the season and that means game prediction time. The Irish will kick off their season against the Rice Owls on Saturday. The Owls are coming off a conference championship season and will enter Saturday’s contest with a lot of confidence. There are a lot of new names starting for the Irish this season. Will the inexperience be an issue in Notre Dame’s first game? Can Rice win on Saturday? Here are our thoughts on Saturday’s game.
Mike Frank
Like most openers in recent memory, I don’t expect the Irish to light the world on fire on Saturday. I expect some sloppy play, some confusion, and some growing pains. The Irish lose too much experience from last year’s starting unit to expect a well-oiled machine.
I do expect Notre Dame to run the ball often, and I think we’ll see mostly positive results. I believe we’ll see a lot of potential in Notre Dame’s backs on Saturday, but I also think we’ll see some missed opportunities as well.
The most intriguing thing to me will be watching Everett Golson and the Irish passing attack. What earlier seemed to be a real strength heading into the season, wide receiver, is now a big question mark with injuries and a suspension decimating the depth the Irish once enjoyed. Is there a true star in this unit or just some nice players?
Defensively, I’ll admit, I’m a bit scared. I just don’t know what to expect. I do think we’ll see an exciting defense, but I’m just not sure how sound they’ll be, especially against the run.
I think we’ll see a close game through the first half, and maybe even through the first three quarters.
Notre Dame: 34 Rice: 20
Bryan Driskell
It has certainly been a rough offseason for Notre Dame, but now the games have arrived. Will the Notre Dame players crumble under the pressure or come together, place a monster chip on their shoulder and become an even better team than many project? I believe this team will rally together and come out on fire. Rice will try to keep it close early by running the ball and keeping the Irish offense off the field. But the Notre Dame offense will quickly move the ball up and down the field, jumping to an early lead and allowing the defense to attack. At some point in the first half the defense or special teams will force a turnover and the offense will quickly capitalize. At that point the spanking will begin to commence.
Notre Dame will show excellent offensive balance in this game, with its talented backs ripping off big runs and its speed receivers making big plays downfield. But ultimately, Rice will have no answer for tight end Ben Koyack and the running ability of Everett Golson. Notre Dame will be up by at least two scores at the half and will pull away late. The Irish defense will give up a few big plays early as the young players adjust to the new defense and the speed of the game. It will force a few negative plays and will force a couple of turnovers that will ultimately help lead to the rout.
Notre Dame: 41 Rice: 23
Matt Freeman
The season opener needs to have questions answered that have been debated for the last nine months answered. Last year, we all had more questions than answers after the Temple game concluded and were saying “they were just holding things back for Michigan”. That was not the case.
Notre Dame will answer those questions this year and take a 21-3 led in the first quarter and Everett Golson shines from the first drive. The Irish show a variety of screens, deep balls and show they aren’t afraid to push the tempo by utilizing the read option early. Greg Bryant shows Irish nation what the hype has been about and takes a long one to the house right before halftime.
The second is used to get the freshman on defense acclimated and Jhonny Williams shows his ability to rush the passer, while Nyles Morgan comes up with some fan pleasing hits in the 2nd half. Malik Zaire comes in and will show his ability to run the football, but shows the difference between Golson and himself by settling for 2 FGs in the 4th quarter after reaching the red zone.
Notre Dame: 48 Rice: 17
Christian McCollum
Running backs Cam McDaniel and Greg Bryant carry the Irish to an early two-touchdown lead in the first half before Everett Golson’s arm busts the game open midway through. McDaniel and Bryant each score touchdowns early as Rice’s defense has loads of trouble containing Notre Dame’s rush attack.
On the other side of the ball, Sheldon Day and Jaylon Smith lead the Irish defense as Rice can never get in a consistent offensive rhythm. Smith flashes even more athletic brilliance than he did during a standout freshman season while Day eases the concerns of Irish fans regarding Notre Dame’s first year without Louis Nix and Stephon Tuitt up front.
As soon as Rice starts to feel like it’s getting something going and has a chance, Golson hits Chris Brown and Ben Koyack with scoring passes to put the game away.
Notre Dame: 31 Rice: 13

Taken from another thread:

If you took his stats from the last 6 games of 2012 (Oklahoma, Pitt, Wake, BC, USC, Alabama) and averaged them out over a 13-game schedule, here are his projected stats. Keep in mind these are stats of a RS Frosh in a conservative offense.

He wasn't great early in the year, he really shined in the 2nd half of 2012.

3,114 passing yards. 17 TDs and 6 INTs.

470 rushing yards. 9 rushing TDs.

When Lou Holtz was coaching at Notre Dame he said, "The fans favorite quarterback at Notre Dame is the one NOT playing". It still is.

ND's "deer in the headlights" QB was 5 Star Dayne Crist. He had an arm and wheels. He started in '10 and suffered with paralysis by analysis. Rees was thrown in the lurch as a true freshman. He had the cerebral skills that Crist never seemed to grasp. He didn't have a strong arm nor any kind of foot speed.

The same "fan" that posted Zaire is the man, probably was posting for Crist to start over Rees. Even after Crist transferred to KU and was still lost there were fans here longing for him. Backup QB Hendrix had a huge run against AF and was immediately anointed Joe Montana. Unfortunely he also struggled with reading defenses and adjusting. Much stronger arm than Rees but Rees found a lot more receivers.

That same "fan" undoubtedly called for Golson as a true freshman, despite the fact that he undersized to take the pounding of a running QB AND he also struggled with decision making.

In '12 as a RS Fr Golson got the start. He struggled but got better (smarter) as the season progressed. Rees did have to come off the bench to bail him out in relief and started in place of Golson after he got his bell rung.

Now Golson is two older, has gotten maturity through adversity, has a more muscular body developed through 3 years of a Div 1 weight program, and he's trained individually with a QB guru on his time and his dime.

So of course the "fan" now wants the guy with no experience and forecasts great things for him as he did with Crist, Hendrix, and ... Golson when he was on the bench.

I'm really, really excited to revisit this thread after the game tomorrow. I think Golson will make mistakes, he may throw a pick or fumble the ball on a run or handoff, there will be rust.

But I also think we are going to see a much more polished passer. This isn't homerism as I don't expect things to be perfect but if our line can give Golson a few drives to be comfortable and not force him to breakdown and run, then I expect Golson to show a much improved ability to read defenses and find his open receiver.

Time will tell...

I am having a hard time coming up with a logical argument for anything less than Golson being significantly better than the last 6 games of 2012. He has a better supporting staff and all the tools needed to succeed. The only question mark I can put up is durability. IF he stays healthy, I can't imagine him being less than a Top 25 QB this year, resulting in the most potent offense we have seen under Kelly.

As a freshman he did have a tendency to hold the ball out away from his body which always scared me.

I think he'll be fine. He's put on more muscle and he's had two years to mature which translates into being smarter about running and avoiding hits.

I expected as much as the stats he quoted were not consistent with going to the national championship game. Oh yea, I forgot. Fuck Michigan!

From a poster at BGI,

Brian Kelly quote on his radio show last night:
"We're gonna be able to do some things offensively that our fans haven't seen in a long time here at Notre Dame".

Score touchdowns in the red zone?

Really can't wait for kickoff tomorrow, and see how this team performs this year.

I'm leaning towards BK talking about Luatua being in the hback...unless they go full house back field

I'm going to predict a 49-10 win for the Irish tomorrow afternoon. Golson will throw for over 200 yards and rush for a little over 70 yards maybe more, maybe less. Corey Robinson will be the leading receiver with over a 100 yards receiving. Two backs will go over 100 yards, hard to choose because all three are capable. Defense will cause 3 turnovers and Jaylon will have either a fumble recovery or an interception. Will allow less than 100 yards rushing and passing. Everett will score one on the ground, 3 passing touchdowns, 2 rushing touchdowns, and a defensive touchdown. Go Irish!

IMO, I think he's talking about the speed that they expect to play at.
I think that would be a good guess. During players interviews they have all spoke of the tempo, and how there is a lot more speed emphasis this year than in the past. I don't know how fast they are going to go, but I think it is safe to say the will be more call and haul plays rather than adjusting at the line of scrimmage.

That's likely part of it. While he was our weakest OL in 2012, Golic was good at being the pulling Guard in "Power O", which is crucial to Kelly's ability to run in compressed yardage situations. Last year it seemed like none of our OL or TEs were nearly as comfortable doing that, so our running game regressed. Having a hard-nosed HB like Luatua should help.

But it's the Option element that Golson brings which will really open things up. He can presumably read the backside DE now (which he never really did in 2012), as well as roll-out for hi-lo pass options or run-pass options. That's going to be a nightmare to defend.

Blood is rushing and accumulating in areas I'd rather not say. I haven't been aroused by an Irish offense in a long time.... to quote Michael Scarn, "Clean up on aisle 5".

Especially on third and short.

As a unit, I'm looking for the offense to do three things against Rice.

Strike quick. Set the tempo for the game and get up on them early. Our defense is young and vulnerable - make their offense as one dimensional as possible as early as possible.

Sustain drives if we get an early lead. Golson is the key here. He has to use his legs to sustain drives and convert on third and short. He did a great job of this against the Sooners in 2012.

Red zone efficiency. There is no reason we shouldn't win man-on-man battles against Rice. Win them decisively and run the ball with a purpose. Everything else will fall into place.

When have we played fast at ND?

I'm just not sure that BK was speaking to a specific year or era when he made that statement. Just that this offense will look different than in years past. We ran some zone read and speed option with Golson in 2012 so that won't be different. But the amount that we use it and the speed with which we get the plays off and get to the line of scrimmage.

This is what I'm most excited to see. It happened the second play of the spring game; Malik rolled to his left and threw a dart. It looked like it was intended for a guy sitting down near the marker, but it sailed over him and was actually intended for Prosise, a deeper option moving across the field toward the sideline.

No more watching Rees roll out slowly and make a late throw. We get to watch athletes roll out and use above-average arm strength to actually hit receivers as they move away from defenders.
