Great job by the parents, calling it in. Couldn't have been easy and they were probably pretty conflicted.

Cheers and Go Irish!!

Edit: I just read that it was his/her sister that called it in and not the parents.

Was thinking about this last night. I can only imagine the conversation when the parents found out about their son and then, what was going through their heads when they found out it was their daughter who made the call.

Some interesting and great (IMO) insight on recent shootings from LEO in Marion County Florida.

This happened a mile from my house today

I am not saying it’s right but this is clearly a different multi victim shooting than a school or work place. Looks like it was a result of a fight or disagreement. So that technically doesn’t make this a random shooting.

I will have to try and read up on this to see what the actual facts are.

It was a large group of hs kids at the beach on a skip day. There were fights and then a shooting. No it wasn’t preplanned mass shooting at a school. Geez

What happened to good ole fist fights? I remember as a teenager we would play football, soccer, basketball, ride bikes and us friends would fight every once in a while. You might lose here and there but never once did anyone bring a gun and want to kill or hurt anyone. Those were the days.

Complete BS. Guns were just as common when I was a teen 45 years ago. In fact, they were significantly easier to get. It wasn't uncommon for teenage boys to have a gun rack in their truck with a rifle and/or shotgun in them. We didn't shoot each other like now, despite having more access to guns. What changed is society and behavior.

I think it all gets traced back to Columbine. The shooters were immortalized like few were before, it was a blueprint for other mentally disturbed people to stage their own attacks. Little has been done to protect the schools since then, much more needs to change. They're too vulnerable, too many easy targets for shooters.

Hard to believe things used to be worse.

How has the rate of U.S. gun deaths changed over time?

While 2020 saw the highest total number of gun deaths in the U.S., this statistic does not take into account the nation’s growing population. On a per capita basis, there were 13.6 gun deaths per 100,000 people in 2020 – the highest rate since the mid-1990s, but still well below the peak of 16.3 gun deaths per 100,000 people in 1974.

A line graph showing that U.S. gun suicide and gun murder rates have increased in recent years, but remain below past highs
The gun murder and gun suicide rates in the U.S. both remain below their peak levels. There were 6.2 gun murders per 100,000 people in 2020, below the rate of 7.2 recorded in 1974. And there were 7.0 gun suicides per 100,000 people in 2020, below the rate of 7.7 measured in 1977. (One caveat when considering the 1970s figures: In the CDC’s database, gun murders and gun suicides between 1968 and 1978 are classified as those caused by firearms and explosives. In subsequent years, they are classified as deaths involving firearms only.)

Something else has changed…

We used to only see it in the news on or in the newspapers. You see it on you social media, some people even get notifications for their local news stations. So people know about it a lot more know.

That’s not just with this but everything anymore.

What I find interesting about that chart is that suicide by firearm pretty much hovers around 7. The murder rates fluctuate a lot.

Child deaths are on a significant rise though

100%. I didn't want to add any commentary that could trigger anyone's ideological indoctrination because I'm told the news is either controlled by fascists or communists.

I can say this... being born in Gary, IN and growing up in the Chicagoland area during the 70's - 80's - 90's, you'd think there were 10x more murders in "Chiraq" now than in the oil embargo era through Crack era. Obviously not true.

I think there’s been a pronounced culture change among people (especially those in ”younger” age brackets) where being disrespected is a HUGE deal. I have several friends that are police officers and they have seen it as well. The majority of the shootings they respond to are because someone disrespected someone else. It used to be an exchange of words, maybe ignoring the perceived disrespect, settling it through discussion or maybe taking it outside for some fists. Shooting someone over it was the exception. Now, in far too many instances, it quickly escalates to shooting the person to settle the dispute rather than taking another route. People are getting numb and they view life as being cheap. Even the mass shootings somewhat fit into this category…….a person is disrespected so they lash out at the perceived culprit(s). People are so focused on settling the score that they don’t really think about the consequences.

I'll be honest... I was surprised by the charts. Thanks for posting them.

Lockdowns have had far reaching ramifications. We've already seen decreases in test scores and now rises in mental illness.

Listening to the radio, it sounds like the guy had a death wish, which he was granted.

Prayers for the deceased and families.

I’m sure he was disrespected and/or wronged by society. Another tragic situation that illuminates that no place is really safe, rolling the dice every time you wake up in the morning. Hopefully our esteemed lawmakers will put aside differences and finally do something new on mental health, firearms/weapons, etc. and how it ties into overall society but I doubt it.

Ironically the mayor that addressed media was shot himself just about a year ago while at work.
