I am a casual SW fan, but have not even see this yet. Now just waiting for Directv ppv and can't seem to find the release date to ppv!?
Put in a RedBox reservation!
My wife grabbed the blu ray last night from RedBox. It was her first, my second, viewing. We spent a good portion of it discussing who Rey's parents are. Neither of us are SW junkies. Casual viewers at best. But that storyline is very intriguing. I'm looking forward to the other two movies.
I AM a Star Wars junkie (though not to the levels of some other guys around here), but Rey's parentage barely interests me haha. I can't figure it out. Usually I'd be going crazy with theories and discussion, but for some reason I am just content to wait it out and see.
I'm content waiting as well. My wife is the type who likes to "figure out" plots. Drives me nuts haha.
Since you are a junkie, what interests you with this new trilogy? Maybe it will give me new insight and perspective. (I loved this movie and have no problem watching it a third and forth time).
The biggest thing I'm curious about is how far along is Kylo Ren in his training? He looks to be this badass dude that everyone in the New Order fears, but the evidence from the first movie creates two possibilities:
1. Kylo Ren isn't very far along at all in his training, even as a Knight of Ren, as evidenced by Snoke's "we must finish his training" line, as well as the fact that he couldn't break through Rey's instinctual Force powers. Rey had zero training, but she shut him down. This means that the next two movies should ratchet way up in terms of the struggle between Ren and Rey as they both get their training.
or
2. Rey is going to be the most powerful Jedi of all time! That's an exaggeration, but if Kylo Ren IS well-trained already, and simply needs a bit more training, that means Rey is on another level in terms of her untapped power. Not only did she block out this well-trained guy without any training of her own, but she was able to use those same powers in a proactive fashion on strangers.
(I guess there is a third possibility, which would be that the plot simply stretched too far to get Rey out of the jam she was in, but I highly doubt that Abrams would let that be the case.)

There's a line of thinking that Rey actually had training that had been a suppressed memory for her. Hence the youngling type outfit she had on during the scene where she was dropped off.
I think Kylo Ren is somewhat trained, but he's totally out of control. He's consumed by revenge and anger and isn't able to harness his powers. Just my $.02.
My wife asked about this too actually. My answer fell somewhere in between your 1 and 2. I said something along the lines of Kylo still being young and needed more training, however he was put in his position of power because of who his parents are and who trained him in the past. Those connections hold importance to the New Order. I mentioned that perhaps Rey is just stronger than he is as well and will only continue to get stronger.
Yeah, I've thought about that a bit. My initial theory was that Rey is obviously related to Kylo Ren somehow, but was split up and sent to live in secret by herself, just in case something went wrong with Ren's training, which obviously happened.
This means she grew up around the Force, and probably knew her parents as Force users or being close to Force users. But the whole "supressed memory" thing doesn't really match up with her reaction when she got dropped off, so I don't know what to think.
Yeah, I think it's interesting that Snoke seemed so detached from the New Order's loss at the hands of the Resistance. His only thought was to make sure that Ren got out so his training could be completed. It's like Snoke is using the New Order's reverence as a perk, rather than being invested in conquering the galaxy (at the moment, at least). I hope this dynamic is intentional, and not just a detachment in the plot.
The old Emperor was simultaneously a Sith Lord AND the head of the Empire. He wanted to conquer the galaxy on both fronts. Snoke, from the little we have seen, really only cares about half of the equation, which makes Kylo Ren's training all the more interesting to me.
I have a hunch I won't ever view the line "Many Bothans died to bring us this information" in the same way.
Looks awesome.
Those guys were the spies who got the plans for the second Death Star. This'll be Katniss Lucas-Disney and her horde of Rebel ninjas.
I'm pumped. I really want to see some Vader though.
Some reddit guy speculating Felicity Jones' character could be Rey's mother.
There is an undeniable attempt by Disney to increase the amount of Asian in the Star Wars universe with this film. Gotta get that Chinese dough.

Welp. I'm now more excited for that movie than I thought I'd be.
Holy Crap this looks amazing!!! I think this looks like it's going to be better than The Force Awakens. Can't wait. Now give me a good third person Star Wars adventure game please.
If you have an old original Xbox in the basement (or if you play games on the PC), get yourself copies Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic 2. Best video games I've ever played.I never tried the star wars games beyond the N64(Rogue Squadron and some other 3rd person star wars shooter game)...have they dabbled in a Mass Effect type RPG yet? Lots of potential to kick ass.
