I keep forgetting we will have Rogue One to satisfy us before May 2017. The cast looks amazing (Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelson, Alan Tudyk, & Forrest Whitaker among others). I think the premise is super cool (stealing the plans for the death star) and maybe some of those characters will appear in the main story eventually.

I guess it's possible (and rumored) that Vader will at least make an appearance via holograms or maybe as an antagonist. I would be so pumped to see a prime, evil Vader in a way they couldn't show us in 1977.

My kids watch the Disney cartoon Rebels and, based on that, I'd give us 90% odds of seeing Vadar. I think the only way we don't is if the director refuses. Disney will push since he is their most iconic character.

That was another thing that confused me. Was that the entire "Republic" that was blown up by Starkiller Base? Was one of those supposed to be Coruscant?

No the Starkiller base is an upgraded Death Star in that instead of planet wide destruction it is capable of star system wide destruction. And it wasn't coruscating either, the capital of the new republic is Hosnian prime, which was the home world of one of the femal leaders in th OT (can't rember her name)

Assuming it is a longer distance around the forest for them to reach the same point in space and all other things being equal this would mean this person would be biking at a faster speed relative to the other biker going through the forest but they reached the same spot in space at the same time. That is not what we are arguing. What is being argued is that the biker through the forest made it to the same spot in space at an unknown rate. WIthout knowing this rate it is immposible to compare it to someone who traveled a further distance but still could have beat the biker through the forest if he were traveling at a faster rate. It does not imply that the biker through the forest was hauling ass. To make this statement valid requires knowledge of the speed of both bikers not just the distance.

But that is ultimately what is being argued. With only a measure of distance you cannot determine the speed, except in this scenario because being able to complete a shorter distance requires you to go faster. It's implied that the shorter distance = quicker speed because every ship is moving at some magnitude of the speed of light, but also because shorter routes require higher speeds.

I think the idea is that the Republic prefer to demilitarize all together (see Episode 1), and they are trying to wish away the First Order. So their may be a Republic fleet, but it is not committed to fighting the First Order, and may not be capable of being rounded up in short order (maybe its assigned to key systems?).

Meanwhile, the First Order, which at first seemed insignificant in the grand scheme of things, is led by a super-powerful force guy (snoke, perhaps Darth Pelagius), who has mustered the resources to make a go at another insane superweapon But the Republic is not aware of this, since the base is secret and the FO probably won't let them get near it and they aren't trying hard enough to do so.

So the Republic is basicaly fighting an unofficial proxy war through Leah's Resistance, which is tiny, but capable. By the time they realize the full threat of the FO, its too late.

Oh man I had forgot about that guy. IMO, Snoke could totally be Darth Plagueis reborn (or didn't actually die). Because he was supposed to be able to control life -- and in EU I remember a lot of people thought he was the one who created Anakin -- and it's not crazy to think he could've brought himself back after Palpatine killed him (or Palpatine didn't actually finish the job). It'd especially make sense why Kylo Ren was turned if it's that Plagueis is like "yo, I created your whole bloodline... that's how badass I am. Come learn some baller stuff the light side doesn't have."

It'd also make sense if he was a brand new character, because apparently there is some stuff in a prequel book (new book, not old EU) about the Empire going out to the furthest reaches of the galaxy and beyond after Palpatine was killed.

Just saw it a second time, I liked it even more this viewing. I had some random thoughts throughout so hopefully I didn't forget anything...

Van Sydows character and the opening crawl both state that he "found" the final piece of the map. This in my mind disproves the theory I had seen around that maybe Luke left Rey there under Sydows protection and entrusted him with the piece of the map.

I think there is zero chance Rey is Leia's daughter. Every time she talks about her she refers to her as "the girl" it stuck out to me as clearly not being familiar. Also when Han and Leia talk after Maz's there is no reason one of them wouldn't have brought her up in the conversation.

Han gives Rey a very strange look when she mentions how she never thought "there was this much green in the entire galaxy" it seemed to me this time watching it, that he felt bad about her feeling this way. I think he probably knows her backstop but isn't directly related to her.

All the people criticizing Rey for being a Mary Sue are forgetting about the first scene with Han and Chewie. Rey hits the wrong fuses and litterally starts that entire situation with her mistake. A Mary Sue wouldnt have made that mistake.

I don't think Kylo got his helmet back. He drops it while talking to Han and the next time we see him he still doesn't have it in the forest. That giant room with the catwalk is destroyed while the battle between Ren and Rey/Finn is still going on, meaning he couldn't have gone and gotten it inbetween the end of the fight and the explosion.

I've seen some people that are saying Kylo had one of his arms sliced off. To me it looked like Rey sliced his saber in half. I think it would be interesting in episode 8 if Ren has to build a new costume and saber because he lost both in 7.

Saw it tonight. I'm not a huge Star Wars guy but I really enjoyed it. It was obviously very similar to the original but it was really well done. Not sure what was sadder, watching Han die or Carrie Fisher's face.

I looked at her IMDB page out of curiosity before seeing Episode VII, just to see what she's done since the originals.

The only way to explain some of her roles and cameos is drug use.

Just saw it... finally! Here are my initial reactions:

1. Before I start complaining, let me first say that I thought it was great. Much, much better than all of the prequels and my preliminary ranking has it oscillating with ROTJ for third in the series.

2. My number one beef with this movie is that Rey, although likable, is too powerful. She literally did not make one mistake in the entire movie. The film began with her as a desert orphan and doubting the existence of the Jedi. By the midway point she's pulling Jedi mind tricks to escape the First Order and defeating Kylo Ren in a lightsaber battle. Throw in the fact that she's instinctively one of the best pilots in the galaxy, also one of the best mechanics, and has some of the best instincts I've ever seen. Her progression during the movie kind of ruined the legitimacy of the whole story for me.

3. There are aspects of Kylo Ren that are badass. His abilities during the opening sequence were menacing, his initial interrogation where he took off the mask was sweet... but what the hell happened to him during the last half of the movie? I get that he is spoiled and conflicted... but he spent years in training with Luke and subsequently lost to Rey using a lightsaber for the first time in her life. The ending should have been flipped; Kylo should have been about to kill Rey and then the planet collapses between them allowing her to escape. Also, was he a Sith?

4. I really liked the movie, but Episode VIII better be an all-timer for me to be completely in on this re-boot. I think they need to figure out a way for the First Order to come back in a big way, while also not hitting all the exact same notes as Episode V. I think they really need to make Kylo more of an imposing villain in the next one.

Yeah I think that's almost a consensus. I'm tempted to say that it'll fall below VI as time goes on but then against maybe not, because Ewoks.

The film began with her as a desert orphan and doubting the existence of the Jedi. By the midway point she's pulling Jedi mind tricks to escape the First Order and defeating Kylo Ren in a lightsaber battle. Throw in the fact that she's instinctively one of the best pilots in the galaxy, also one of the best mechanics, and has some of the best instincts I've ever seen. Her progression during the movie kind of ruined the legitimacy of the whole story for me.

This is a common criticism but I think there is context that vindicates the plot IMO.

She was an orphan and a scavenger, particularly one who needed to know how to find valuable parts on Empire equipment to put food on the table. Her knowledge of common Empire/First Order designs is explained pretty well. Then I mean she obviously had experience in and around the Millenium Falcon and was just a certifiable grease monkey.

Kylo Ren was also shot in the stomach by Chewbecca's powerful weapon. We saw it blow Stormtroops away, and Ren took a direct hit. Plus he's an emotional dweeb so it's not surprising she was able to fight him to a draw considering her previous skills with a staff.

I could have done with one of the force moments being removed, so I agree to some extent. The mind game on Daniel Craig's stormtrooper was probably the most egregious for me, but how else is she getting out of there?

...is any of the that really any worse than Han Solo and company getting out of the Falcon inside an asteroid and not immediately succumbing to the effects of the vacuum of outer space?

4. I really liked the movie, but Episode VIII better be an all-timer for me to be completely in on this re-boot. I think they need to figure out a way for the First Order to come back in a big way, while also not hitting all the exact same notes as Episode V. I think they really need to make Kylo more of an imposing villain in the next one.

I'm with you there and I think think that's exactly what they're going to do. This trilogy (though I'd bet they stretch it to at least four movies) is going to be about their parallel growths as users of the force.

That's a reasonable explanation for the gearhead aspect, but it's hard to justify some of the absolutely insane piloting stunts she pulled off.

IMO, the last scene should have went like this:

1. Kylo easily dispatches Finn -- like a 15 second fight. Not even a contest.
2. Rey picks up the lightsaber (doesn't use the force to get it) and gets dominated but puts up just enough of a fight for the audience to realize that she is Jedi-potential.
3. Kylo is about to kill her but the planet collapses between them -- Chewie saves the day and gets an injured Finn and Rey off the planet.

As an aside, hopefully Luke does a better job training Rey than Kylo.

That scene was the worst part of the movie for me. How did she even know what a Jedi mind trick is? I'm not sure what they could have done to get her out, but it took Luke two movies to master that.

She hits the wrong breakers and releases whatever those giant monsters were that Han and Chewie were transporting. She also runs away from her fears after talking to Maz and facilitates her own capture.

Kylo wasn't even trying to kill her. Remember he freaked the fuck out when he was told 'a girl' was part of all this? "What Girl??" he asked, and pulled that jagoff in to force choke him. Then, instead of cracking his neck, he thrashed the room like a little kid throwing a tantrum.

It's so good. He couldn't act like Vader because he's not that evil. I love this shit.

Because I don't seem to remember a father being named for Anakin. If so that does open up some options for the story line.
I'm also thinking she will end up the child of prophecy and bring balance.

As mentioned, KR was hurt--Chewie shot him. Also:
1) she had been using the force her whole life, like Anakin with computers and mechanics and piloting
2) between Solo and Kylo Ren she was in a place where she had ZERO doubts about the reality of the Force
3) she was desperate- it was live or die
