I think Utah is who we thought they were. They beat the spread against a hard fighting Michigan team. If they wouldn't have had that dumb penalty (which UM converted into a TD) and missed two FG's, this game could have been a blowout.

But even without that... They still beat the spread.

To be fair, UM had some cringe worth moments with the TO's and FG's too.

Point still stands though, both teams had some big mistakes and Utah still beat the spread.

I happen to believe Utah is a good, not great team and I am really looking forward to the BYU-UM game.....it should be delicious.

Utah also caught some breaks, UM had the Utes secondary beat on 3 or 4 deep balls that were just overthrown. Could have just as easily gone the other way. The play calling was solid, but either the execution or skill just wasn't there.

Also, Jabrill Peppers was a stud. He's the kind of player ND desperately needs.

Peppers was awesome. Imagine him paired with Jaylon?

I always cringe at comments like this. So it could have gone either way if Michigan was a better team? The entire game of football is premised on execution and skill. Having less of those two things doesn't equate to the other team "catching a break".

That's like saying, "damn... If I wasn't so ugly and poor, I would totally date a supermodel".

I honestly don't think Morris would have done any better. Utah's secondary was balling hard, and Ruddock was taking big hit after big hit. Morris has shown he can't survive when he is getting hit.

That's funny. I was perusing MGoBlow to see what their feelings were after the loss, and they've got a thread talking about how awesome the OL was last night. "No sacks!" Yeah, they obviously must have missed the hits and the fact their OL didn't move shit to get their running game going last night. Granted, they averaged more than we did against scUM last year, but we weren't turning the ball over every other drive either. It reminds me of the discussion with Tom a few weeks back where I pointed out all the QB guru coaches in the world can only do so much behind a weak OL, we've seen that in the past ourselves. Ruddock wasn't turnover prone at Iowa, but he didn't look much better than Morris or Gardner behind that line last night. Until they get that OL figured out it's going to cost them a few games that their defense can't bail them out of.

the first Int where Perry ran a dig instead of a flag/out route can't be blamed on the OL.

I enjoyed Butch Davis's comments afterwards. "Jim Harbaugh's DNA is all over this offense." Hmm...

Harbaugh's quotes afterwards were pithy, though anyone is subject to the four letter network's editing. " Good football...It was very important for both teams to win this game....Everything that happens from here on in matters the most." (Shamelessly editing)

Their O Line still looked better than I've seen in a while, it stood out to me anyway...

scUM's defense will be very good. scUM's offense will be easy to shut down. Bracket Butt [LOL] (he'll still hurt you, but at least you can limit damage) and roll some help towards Darboh. Force Rudock to deal with the pass rush and try to make smart decisions consistently away from his primary targets.

scUM will be a good team next season, and perhaps a very good team for the foreseeable future after that... but for now, their OL and their QB will limit them, and will waste a pretty good defense.

What stood out to you? The less than 3 ypc or the constant barrage of hits the QB took?

Something was off last night. Typical Harbaugh pulling OL to the hole type of running attack, but Smith just wasn't following the block. Either the timing was off, Smith wasn't patient enough, or the OL couldn't get a push. Perhaps a mix of those. Either way, it wasn't pretty.

But for real, my point was the UM football has some good play callers and it may just be 1 or 2 weeks away from putting it all together as they continue to adjust to the new coaching staff and new QB. Or, they will need Morris to step in and step up at QB.

That quote was in response to someone saying that Michigan could have won. I was simply giving the devil's advocate to their statement. Not trying to make one myself.

Don't twist it, I'm not saying they were great, just noticeably better. They gave him time actually... I was surprised by that... last year when I watched them, the O Line was def their biggest problem... they still need to improve in getting a push on the running game tho...

It was a different style, but statistically it was not better than last year. They had less than 3 ypc and their QB was getting hit on every drive. If anything, Rudock did a good job of not taking sacks. I'm not sure where the improvement was, but it's cool.

Judging only by what we saw after one game, I think Minnesota can beat them as well.

Can we all just agree that Michigan sucks, regardless of scores or other on field performances?

Yeah. We're giving them too much time. They're not worthy and not worth it. I'm moving on from this thread for now.

Some of you are giving michigan too much credit.

1. The running game was as bad as last year, and I don't mean that in a good way. Three plays to get one yard in the fourth quarter, and they couldn't do it. Averaged less than 3 yards per carry and had a long of seven yards. If ND runs the ball that badly tomorrow, the irishenvy server may overheat.

2. Three turnovers given away - They got one, on a hailmary at the end of the half. Same michigan as last year.

3. Defense couldn't stop Utah on key third downs. The defense is not better than last year.

4. I will give them this, they didn't give up when it was 24-10. (It very easily could have been 30 -10 at that point).

From the Grantland summary, after first saying its tough to jump to conclusions after one game...but

Now that you’re in a more cheerful mood and are less concerned about the ultimate takeaways from the season premiere of Harbaugh Mania, let’s talk about Michigan’s on-field performance, which was admittedly not encouraging. Offensively, it was a borderline debacle. Prior to a final, ultimately futile touchdown drive that cut the eventual margin of defeat to seven points, Michigan had managed just 275 yards of total offense, less than it gained in last year’s loss to Utah, when the offense was so bad that fans who had to evacuate Michigan Stadium during a second-half lightning delay didn’t bother to come back once the game resumed. The tailback rotation of De’Veon Smith, Ty Isaac, and Derrick Green combined for 60 yards rushing on 2.6 yards per carry, with a long gain of seven. The new quarterback, Iowa transfer Jake Rudock, was the exact opposite of the safe, plays-within-the-offense caretaker that Michigan fans had been led to believe they were getting — last year, Rudock threw just five interceptions in 345 attempts as a Hawkeye — instead serving up three picks on 43 attempts against the Utes.

Maybe I watched another game. If it wasn't for some questionable play calling by Wittingham this game should have been a blow out. What I was watching is if the talent that rotted under Hoke would make any strides, and for now it hasn't . That is to say that by the end of the year it won't be better but its a toss up at this point.

My nephew bet me that UM would beat one of MSU or OSU. I took it and ran.
