Reading between the lines, it looks like this will be a reflection more of AG's defense than originally thought. Tells me MF is open minded and will listen to his coaches.

He's young and not entirely set in his ways yet. I think it is a strength versus what we've had previously.

It's one of the younger staffs in America, average age of around 40 I believe, but having Golden/Hiestand/McCullough around will be good for business. I think he has to lean on those guys in particular.

My one fear/hesitancy in this defensive approach is added complexity can lead to breakdowns and big plays when a single assignment is missed. I hope Golden knows how to simplify and I hope the guys get plenty of repetition with these calls so they are prepared and there is very little "thinking" involved.

Given our history with BVG, I'm assuming that MF probably covered these concerns in the interview process. Even if he didn't I can guarantee that Swarbrick did.

Most of the schematic changes I’ve noticed have been blitz wise, particularly from the safeties. Part is Golden for sure. Part I think is life after JOK and KH though. Part is some resemblance of depth at safety and Marist back. Freeman did not scheme with his DBs what I think he would have wanted last year.

That's why I half jokingly made my post about BVG. While it can be "concern" I think AG is about a gillion times better coach then BVG on his best day.

I think that's become normal football 2022. The way offenses are structured now, you can have overly complex schemes installed because everything is happening fast and furious.

I think that they're doing drills and repetition in practice that is of an NFL nature. That's good. It has nothing to to with schematics. NFL type practice reps with simplified scheme is the best case scenario.

It just doesn't sound like they're reinventing the wheel.

To continue the conversation from the mothballed thread...

The safety blitz play is at 6:00. I think Mickey just made a mental error on this one.

Both of the slot DBs (Mickey and I don't know who the other is) lined up to the inside of their WRs. The bottom DB stands his ground and take away the inside of the field, daring the QB to throw the out. Mickey, OTOH, lines up inside but pretty soon turns his hips to the sideline and gives the WR the middle of the field.

I think Mickey's job was to take away the inside slant (notice how shallow the LB is playing, he's only able to help on a shallow cross) and force OSU to throw the out. Instead he tried to blanket the WR and take away everything.

The blitz was the most obvious bad call of the night. Otherwise their game plan and execution was absolutely outstanding. The Ohio State offense was excellent last year and they are going to be again this year. Time is going to tell as to just how impressive this defensive performance was.

I think they are going to be better in the secondary than people first thought. Just have to keep everyone healthy.

D Line has some absolute swashbuckling grit to it.

MF talked about this in the presser and I tend to agree with coach that the "call" may not have been poor, but the execution most certainly was. It was obvious we were struggling to move the ball, so dialing up a blitz on 3 & 11, while aggressive, could've been a game changer in that moment. Probably would've pushed them out of FG range, if not it would have been a low probability make.

The safeties just didn't time the blitz well at all and Mickey was left on an island.

Yeah, I don’t hate the call. You have to take shots sometimes, and the momentum was clearly not ours. Sometimes it just doesn't work. I don’t think anyone should be getting their panties in a twist about It.

Hats off to Al. Championship level defense. Held the most potent offense in the country to 21 pts. That safety blitz doesn't bother me as it was clear the offense wouldn't be enough

20+ points to Marshall at home. All good he got last week is gone after today.

We were ahead in the fourth quarter and downed a punt at their 4. That's when the defense makes a stop and wins the game on a day the offense was putrid. Instead we let them go 96 yards for a touchdown. Not good.

Ideally the defense gets a stop there and with the talent disparity it should have happened.

But the defense is the least of the concerns. Yeah the D line has been shitty and the linebackers look sloooow. But they are still keeping points down enough to win games.

The offense is a chicken with its head cut off. A really dumb, really unprepared, and really soft chicken.

They have yet to generate a turnover in 8 quarters of football. Can't blame Tommy Rees for that.

I think they are performing admirably to this point. Not perfect, not terrible, but they don't have the playmakers to make up for what the offense lacks. Both games so far could have used a big turnover to turn the tide and generate a shift in either game. They are a solid unit but don't have a game changer that can get a pick six or a big play to generate points.

I’ve been very surprised with how vanilla it’s been pass rush wise. Versus OSU I see the pro of that route. Not sure I get why we’re not stunting guys, getting a bit more wild versus Marshall. Basically only shown A gap pressures. Vast majority of the time were just lining up 4 DL, Foskey is getting doubled and no one else gets pressure and that’s the end of the play.

Yeah, all those double teams that KH drew last year in the middle of the line let Foskey do his thing. Those double teams are on him now and nobody has stepped up to to take advantage.

some complete lack of situational football on this side of the ball. two 90+ yard drives in the back halfs of football games with the lead have been brutal.

I dont think i can point to a single second half adjustment where we took something away from the other team that worked in the first half either.

Woof.
