Notre Dame needs them to be good. I don't think they go 12-0, and if they go 11-1... they need to have some big wins considering they don't have a "title game"

Yep. And, although it's a media poll, I think these 2 games will be tougher than some may admit.

Yes they do. Have since the early 2000's.

There seems to be a lot of pessimism here on this board about the Clemson game. I get it that playing them there is a tough thing for anyone to do, but with what I've read, Clemson has some VERY big replacing to do.

They apparently lost eight of eleven starters on defense, and four of five starters on the OLine. Yes, their QB is supposed to be very good, but even he is just a sophomore used to operating behind veteran protection. I can't imagine much worse replacing to do than the vast majority of your defense and OLine. The OLine thing is so iffy that an INCOMING frosh is slated to be the blindside protector. What are the chances that all these missing parts get replaced at high level function by the time we play them? And you better be highly functioning if you're going to beat Notre Dame. Sure, we're beatable, but not by just tossing your helmet out there.

How does Clemson get there? Their first two games are cupcakes --- they can't learn much from playing Wofford and App State --- in the sense of getting ready for the big boys. Then they have to go to Louisville. That's the first chance that they have to find out who they are. It will be interesting to watch that score and I'd be surprised if Louisville doesn't "upset" them. Then they have a week off to reassess and regroup. And in we come. I'll bet that if we're rolling at that time, there won't be a lot of strutting over-confidence seeing us come into town. Of course if WE are already malfunctioning, then all such predictions are off.

G Tech scares me way more than Clemson... I think Tech doesn't get the hype because they haven't been really good in a long while... Clemson has major holes and ND can do very well their style...

What exactly is the basis for this conclusion? It certainly can't be a strength of schedule argument. I just don't see why it matters to some people. Notre Dame can take your bid or another team can. It doesn't make a difference.

It's like he forgets that they play an FCS team every year. How is that any better than playing all FBS teams and not having a conference championship? At the end of the year we would both have 12 wins over FBS teams if we both went undefeated. You prove nothing by beating an FCS team (although you prove a lot if you lose to one LOL Michigan)

I can understand this more than Pinkel. The ACC coaches should want ND to enhance the conference brand. They don't care about everyone being on a level playing field, they just want what is best for their conference/school. Why any non-ACC coach cares is beyond me though...

I hope we smack the crap out of Clemson this year and then wait to see what Dabo has to say.

Absolutely, comment makes sense from his prospective

You guys are giving Dabo Swinney way too much credit if you think conference brand enhancement is behind his comments. He's not that smart. That was purely from his ignorance regarding ND's "special treatment."

Remember, if you ever want to interpret something Swinney says and you have a choice of multiple alternatives, choose the dumbest. That's usually what he meant.

Dabo Swinney can talk when his squad doesn't open the season with games against Wofford and App State. What a joke

This year Clemson plays 8 full time ACC opponents and ND. ND plays six ACC games and USC, Navy and Stanford, who are annual opponents.

For what it's worth, comparing Sagarin's end of season rankings of 2014 teams, Clemson's other three opponents are:
South Carolina (35), Appalachian State (102) and Wofford (146).

ND's other three opponents are:
Texas (53), Temple (87) and UMass (154)

Impact of a full ACC schedule
Playing the contracted five ACC games and subtracting Stanford (18), USC (21) and Navy (70) in order to play an eight game ACC schedule would certainly lessen our strength of schedule. We could keep USCw (21) vs their USCe (35) and increase the divide in our SoS with Clemson. Adding Stanford (18) and Navy (70) as our other two non-conference games creates a chasm between us and Clemson.

Old prejudices die hard in the myopic.

I wouldn't underestimate Clemson. And "just a Dab-O do ya" usually coaches better when his team is overlooked. They have to rebuild both lines, but they have plenty of talent to do it. Just got to see if they step up. On offense, they have solid receivers. If Watson is 100%, they should be able to score pretty well. Playing at home helps them against the Irish.

Tech has to find some receivers to throw the ball to. Lost in that offense is the fact that Thomas is probably the best passer they have had there in a while. If they don't have some receivers that step up, then Thomas and his rb crew will find running the ball a little more difficult.

This what I've also always felt these guys mean when they pop off about Notre Dame and its independence. I hear it all the time and its purely out of what is in their mind special treatment. They just don't get that Notre Dame has decided to go this way-a much harder way. My favorite line back to ANYONE who pops off like this to me is one simple answer. 'Notre Dame is bigger than your conference'. Why join if you don't have to .It is curious to me that this particular summer all these things keep popping up. Could it be that they know there is a good team in South Bend and that Kelly has a program up and running like Notre Dame can run. They don't like that. By the way it IS laughable how they keep bringing up the 13th game while they play 2-3 lame #$$ games every year against guarantee win teams. Right now 'ole dabo' plays a 10 game schedule unless you think Wofford and App State are normal games. Ole Pink's got southeast Mo State and ark State to contend with on that killer out of conference schedule.
