Well, it's early but to unclog some threads felt this thread is needed. Everyone post your thoughts on:
1. How many 5ths
2. Who
3. Why

Thanks...

That would definitely depend on how many elite recruits want to don the blue and gold. Mike Frank mentioned the recruiting class could be as high as 22...

There are some lists scattered around.

I stated in the other thread that the youth movement will motivate a few transfers. If we take the 20-22 that many claim that leaves very few spots left.

Wow. This is easily the strongest group of 5th years we've had in a while.

You are correct. It almost worries me about the size of the class. But I'm fairly certain it'll all work out.

Agree. I think you have to let the 3 db's go. Daniels will probably opt to leave. Schmidt and Rabasa are prob the next inline to not get asked back. Who knows Springman and Hounsell could go on medical...

The way I look at recruiting this year is we have 27 spots for '15 recruits and 5Y. Speculation is we take 20-22 recruits, but no matter what number we end up at, it appears we shouldn't have a problem reaching 85 at the start of spring ball (guys on campus + 2015 signees).

In a perfect world, the staff can delay 5Y decisions until after spring ball. I'd hate to see a guy like Hounshell transfer to Miami (OH) only to have someone else transfer during/after spring ball and we end up at less than 85 heading into the fall. Unfortunately, delaying the 5Y decisions is not likely, but is it unrealistic? Could BK invite them all back and be clear about there being competition for a limited number of spots, or do players need to know where they stand before spring practice?

Of the 15 eligible 5Y, I count 11-12 on the two-deep. Assuming we only take five 5Y, we'll be letting 6-7 5Y go in the two-deep? I don't envy the staff with the decisions that lie ahead for them.

As for who they invite back...Golson and Martin are my top two, and, surprisingly, Schmidt is my #3. After the spring he had and the way coaches are talking about him heading into this season, how do you let a guy like that go? I'd round it out with Springmann and Councell, but I'd feel terrible letting guys like Hanratty, Hegarty, Grace and Farley go. I believe Daniels is NFL bound after this season.

I say this as much as I can, but Springman is a hoss! Love the dude and will be biting ball bags this fall!

Golson - obvious reasons
Martin - returning starter and he'll be the leader of the oline
Springmann - big body, experienced and can play several positions on the d line
Councell - returning starter and could be a captain if he comes back

gone
Hounshell - young talent will take his reps
Schmidt - I think he's gone regardless of what happens with grace. nyles/deeb/freshman
Rabasa - seems like a solid kid but can't crack the two deep
Brown - young corners are too talented
Hardy - i doubt he gets in the two deep.
Farley - i doubt he's back even though he gives us depth at corner and safety.

Maybe
Daniels - he'll have the roster spot but he'll go to the league
Hegarty or hanratty - whoever gets more tick this year may get a spot. Hanratty has less talent but he plays nasty and every offensive line needs a guy like him
Grace - if he's healthy, he's got a spot. big if at this point.
Carlisle - coaches love his potential but he hasn't done much

I think Carlisle has more clout on this list simply for the lack of depth at RB (I know, he's technically a WR this year).

If he leaves, ND will go into their 2015 opener with only 2 RB's that have ever toted the rock in a college game. I'm omitting Mahone because he's never played and/or been healthy.

If ND signs 2 RB's this cycle, I suppose the need for Carlisle dwindles a little, particularly if one of the new RB's is an EE.

I don't think Carlisle's play has necessarily earned him a 5th year, but the lack of depth perhaps could.

The way I see it:

QB Everett Golson (Is a must, especially if he's the starter this year.)
RB Amir Carlisle (Unless he disappears at slot this year and gets passed over by Hunter or Prosise, he's probably going to be wanted back.)
WR DaVaris Daniels (Unlikely that he'll return. I can see him getting 1000 yards receiving and his grades issues will most likely have him bolting for the draft.)
OC Matt Hegarty (I don't think he'll be asked back, unless something drastic happens to Martin. He's good, but with Bivin on roster and adding Hoge, I think they'll be able to replace him.)
OC Nick Martin (Take, no question.)
OG Connor Hanratty (Maybe, but if Nelson, Mustipher and Byrne make a lot of noise, Connor returning wouldn't be a guarantee.)
DE Chase Hounshell (Depends on his health. If he stays healthy and thrives as the backup to Day, then he's back.)
DE Tony Springmann (Same as Hounshell)
LB Jarrett Grace (Again, health with be a major red flag. If he can't stay healthy, then he'll leave ND with a degree in hand.)
LB Joe Schmidt (If Grace makes a seemless return and Morgan dominates as a freshman, that might be it for Schmidt.)
LB Anthony Rabasa (Not happening.)
LB Ben Councell (Definitely a take if he stays healthy.)
CB Jalen Brown (Nope.)
S Eilar Hardy (Nope.)
S Matthias Farley (Nope.)

So it seems that there are 3 must takes, 4 no takes and the rest are coin-flips. Tough choices are on the horizon, but it's a good problem to have I suppose.

Courtesy of One Foot Down...here is a list of potential 5th year players:

QB Everett Golson - Absolutely offer it and he comes back
RB Amir Carlisle - This is tricky but I'm leaning no. It depends how WR and RB shake out in recruiting.
WR DaVaris Daniels - offer and he comes back. He dad makes him
OC Matt Hegarty - I think he or Hanratty should be considered. Depth matters on the line.
OC Nick Martin - Absolutely if he wants back. I bet he comes back and is a captain in his 5th year.
OG Connor Hanratty - See Hegarty
DE Chase Hounshell - Another one whose you wish the best for but it hasn't worked out. Good luck.
DE Tony Springmann - if he is healthy and playing to his ability this is one you bring back.
LB Jarrett Grace - really depends on his health and the progress of Morgan and others. Maybe but leaning no. It also depends on the position some guys, like Rudolph, will play in the 4-3
LB Joe Schmidt - Sorry buddy. Thanks for your hard work and love of ND. You should be proud.
LB Anthony Rabasa - Has been a man without a position for a long time plus health issues. Thanks and use the degree.
LB Ben Councell - If he looks like the blue chipper he was billed to be then welcome back. But, there is a lot of young talent at the position.
CB Jalen Brown - Unless he does something incredible this year, thank you and use that degree.
S Eilar Hardy - I love thinking that he could be a stud for us but I haven't seen it and he would have to put together a really impressive campaign.
S Matthias Farley - great athlete and great kid who I wish the best for. Has made some plays but I take a kid with 4 years of eligibility over him.

My list:

Absolutely invite back:
Golson
Daniels
Martin
One of Hegarty/Hanratty

If healthy:
Springmann

Maybe depending on depth:
Grace
Carlisle

Agree with all except Springmann and Hounshell. I think both are maybe's. Hounshell has a lot of potential and can be a huge asset behind Day. His fate will be decided by living up to that potential and most importantly staying healthy. If he has another injury plagued year, then he's gone. Springmann is in a similar boat, though I'll admit he's more valuable at this point, but he's also coming off a major injury himself, so he'll have to stay relatively healthy to be back next year.

I think Hegarty comes back. I just don't see them letting go of an OL that is good enough to start for 75%+ of BCS teams, regardless of how good Bivin/Nelson/Montelus/etc are.

Why is almost everyone saying that Schmidt is "gone" or a no? He might be our starting MLB this year. I would put him in the maybe category.

100% Back
-- Golson
-- Martin
-- Springmann

0% Chance
-- Rabasa
-- Brown

Draft
-- Daniels

There are so many variables with the other guys left....2 spots?

-- Carlisle (we have 6 younger WRs.....Brown/Fuller/Robinson/Prosise/Hunter/Brent... he needs to be solid contributor this year)
-- Councell (where does he play? Is he moved to MLB? Does he beat out Turner/Onwualu)
-- Grace/Schmidt (depends on Councell and Morgan IMO)
-- Hegarty/Hanratty (Brought in 4 frosh OL to go along with 5 last year plus Martin/Stanley...we don't need these two.....)
-- Hounshell (can he stay healthy and in 2-deep....if he does I think he gets a 5th year, he was solid in 2011)
-- Hardy/Farley (again depends on other guys on the depth chart....Hardy has better chance)

Assuming we only have 2 spots left, I think we ask back one of the LBs (Councell, Grace, Schmidt) and none of the OL. IMO its down to see if Carlisle or Hounshell can put up some numbers this year. If not, Hardy gets asked back for S depth.

Way too many unknowns, but what I will say is Springmann is not even close to 100%, IMO. In fact, depending on what Day/Jones do, I'd be rather surprised if he's back.

Interesting. Is he still dealing with his injury? If he performs like he did in 2012, I think he'll get a spot but JMO

Yeah very possible. Had a little bit of an issue finding a spot for him, but maybe we take on less skill player or DB for him.

I think we bring back one LB from the three eligible. IDK who but right now I'd go with Councell.
