Blowing up Hayes to be a defensive end was a mistake in my opinion.

I’ll never forget that play when he was a freshman and carried a running back up the seam stride for stride. Should have stayed at linebacker in college.
That was just his body type. He struggled to keep the weight down. In fact, his pass rush production seemed very much tied to his weight. As the lbs went up, he lost a step.

He was a good Vyper in that system. He just played at the same time as a very good one. And, right before one of the best of all-time.

They didn't have to blow him up. He was never going to be anything but a 250-260+ DE or 3-4 ROLB. I saw that dude as a Soph in '14 while in CA and it was obvious.

What film is he reviewing?
Looks like most of it was from his sophomore season. So yeah, I can see consistency being the issue.

Jamie echoes that sentiment, saying he has Okwara type potential, but he needs to develop consistency and play fast more frequently. It comes back to being very raw in terms of DE technique. But he's young, so that should come with time. More of an athlete than an end at this time, but he certainly flashes that kind of crazy twitch off the line and has the length that you want in a Vyper.

You combine landing May with getting a guy like Burgess, maybe another longer LB like Justin Hill or Christian Jones, I think you're going to be just fine at Vyper, especially with the '24 class you're bringing in.

Mentioned on ISD power hour today that he might have visited Auburn this past weekend

I mean yeah, of course. He's a DE from Alabama who committed to Notre Dame really early in his recruitment for some reason.

I’m trying to be excited about him and the QB from Mississippi but I just can’t. Lol.
I feel ya. I remember the days under Holtz when ND could dip into Miss/SoCarolina/Florida/Louisiana and sign some key guys. Now it rarely works out.

I wouldn’t be that bothered by this. Or bothered by it at all. Shanklin is the edge rusher.
That was Frank's point as well. Agree too. No sleep lost if there is a May for Shanklin swap. Plus Darren Ikinnagbon is still there.
Could be an upgrade, objectively.

Think the staff would have taken him as a player, but it sounds like they did not appreciate him visiting other schools.

Meh, if we were to lose one I’m fine with it being this one I guess.

Deuce said it’s not a mutal decision so take it for what it’s worth

May and Deuce are pretty tight, right? I'm not that worried about May - especially if this was about him visiting other schools or NIL drama, and not the staff ditching him in hopes of landing someone "better" - but I would worry a little about alienating our QB (who has lately been tweeting about offers from other schools).

Seemed like he had a foot out the door since the beginning. I wonder what the conversations were like at Junior Day?
