So this is one week removed from finalize carr non enrollment news.

Makes u wonder if this was something that could have been pulled off earlier but we gave Carr the time to decide.

Sounds more like Minchey came back around to us after deciding initially to stick with Pitt in the summer after the Moore debacle.

So next year a new OC and a QB room with 8 or 9 dudes in it.

That's my summary since 3:45 PM CST yesterday. LOL.

I really think the OC and QB Coach should be split

I’m curious as to why you think that.

Seems like since the QB runs the offense, and to a large extent, based on his play will determine the success of your offensive output, you want your OC and QB to have a closer relationship. I feel like it naturally makes sense.

Obviously it’s not the end all be all, Chip Long was the TE coach and OC, and Justin Frye is an OL coach at OSU and Co-OC. But predominately, in both college and the pros, your OC is also your QB coach.

Pros and cons:

Pros - QB is focal point and leader to offense. Offense flows through QB.

Con- so time consuming. Both recruiting and player development. Pre occupies OC’s time. If you have QB tunnel vision as an OC your whole team is fucked (eg. Tommy Rees).

You'd have to get rid of another assistant to do that, though. Believe the limit is 10 total.
It’s this a ND thing? With a limit of 10? Or an NCAA rule? The only reason I ask is because it seems like Bama and UGA have like 75 coaches on the staff.. Obviously 75 is an exaggeration but Saban’s and Smart’s coaching staffs seems a lot more than 10. A lot more analysts maybe????

Bingo. And "analysts" are much more limited as to what they can do for your team.
Exactly and if I'm not mistaken they only make like $35-50k a year; think about that, guys are taking major, major pay cuts to simply join the Saban coaching tree, learn from the master, and parlay that into success at a lesser program. It has worked out for most guys.

  • Charlie Strong - Analyst in 2020, co-defensive coordinator at Miami currently.
  • Mike Locksley - Analyst in 2016, Bama assistant '17-'18, Maryland HC currently.
  • Steve Sarkisian - Analyst in 2016,Atl Falcons OC in 2018, Bama OC 2020, currently the Longhorns' HC.
  • Butch Jones - Analyst in 2018 - 2020, currently Arkansas St HC.
  • Lane Kiffin - (to a lesser extent, as we was hired as an assistant) - Bama OC, parlayed that into a successful stint at FAU and now is HC at Ole Miss.
Long story short, many of his analysts and/or assistants have their reputations restored working for Saban, which is why many of them will join as an "analyst" at a very modest salary.

His accuracy and effortless throwing motion stand out to me. His accuracy alone will give him a high floor in college.

I’m obviously excited about CJ Carr, but I think they have something in Minchey. If he chooses Notre Dame, of course.

yeah his throwing motion is real smooth and effortless and will only get better as he gets bigger and stronger.

Watching his tape, outside of no really unique arm angles, he honestly reminds me a lot of Mahomes. Every single ball is money whether there is pressure, clean pocket, on the run, off the wrong foot, whatever. Like that he has some serious scrambling ability but doesn't rely on it. If he is healthy enough for the AA Bowl, I expect he'll show out and get a nice rankings bump too.

If our collective assumptions are correct then he strikes me as Aaron Rogers mixed with Randall Cunningham. If not then he just reminds me of that dude who rode the pine at Pitt for four years,…..
Having now spent tons of time not watching any of his film I can confidently say this changed to:

‘…If he ends up Irish he strikes me as Aaron Rogers mixed with Randall Cunningham. If not then he just reminds me of that dude who rode the pine at wherever it is he ends up for four years,…’

Weren’t most of those fired from previous jobs and still getting their buyouts?

I know in Jones’ case his buyout would have been mitigated by any salary he got from another job. So he got a full buyout while working with Saban which then made his resume look better for the next job.

you're probably right, I'm not 100% certain but that would certainly soften the blow of taking an "entry-level" salary. However, they also likely had other opportunities to be coordinators or HCs at lower tier schools but decided to attend night classes with Professor Saban instead. It's definitely a fast track back to relevance, it seems.

But that's a fair point
