I hope Tobias finds success in life, but it's not going to be through football- it has to be something he has passion for and is willing to work at. It's frustrating because he's going to waste his God-given talent

I'd rather have a nasty SOB like Quenton Nelson on the ND football team than some "good kid" who plays like it's a summer 7on7 drill

What kind of behavioural sciences do you practice?

As a layman, I can’t wrap my head around middle aged men shitting on a college athlete who’s publicly been a good kid. Care to share your wisdom?
I've worked my ass off to get to where I am in life. There's nothing that annoys me more than laziness/lack of passion. It's clear that Tobias doesn't have that inner drive/Mamba mentality/killer instinct, etc., at least not for football

Also, I hope early-mid 30s isn't middle age for me

Guy plays lazy (eye test) add to that suspect hands and seemed to play without heart. I think he needs to own his underachievement so far more than coaching or Hartman. The potential is there and he may still show us but history shows very few ND defectors amount to much.

Guess what, they aren’t all wired like Q. We’d all like AA nasties that become annual All Pros but that isn’t how they’re all made (hint he’s a WR not an IOL). Why don’t you just wish the kid well and be done w it instead of being some internet warrior that feels the need to shit on a kid that a year or 2 ago was willing to commit to our beloved Irish.

Personally I’d rather you just keep your negativity to yourself.

This will sound wild, but I think if cameras were on you at your biggest moments there might be times when it didn’t appear that you had a mamba mentality.

Seems weird to shit on guy who’s been a good kid.

Who’s saying he isn’t owning the underachievement?

Tobias will always have my respect for being the guy who stuck with Notre Dame while the head coach ducked out of dinner at his house to take a job at a different school.
I’m sorry it didn’t work here, and I think you’re making a mistake, but good luck and God speed, wherever life takes you kid.

I appreciate that he stuck around when Kelly bailed. That was an especially shitty thing for a coach to do, but Tobias and his family stuck with it.

I don't know why he never took the next step, but he didn't. He ran poor routes and couldn't catch, even when balls hit him in the hands. He was open more later in the season, maybe because db's knew they didn't need to be on him that closely.

He might find the necessary mentality/maturity with a fresh start elsewhere. But, and this is unfortunate, because we'd rather it wasn't true, him leaving will not have a negative impact on this football program.

He can make plays if you can help him get open, that sets up well for Pac 12 offenses (not sure how they'll fare in the big ten), but tobias is not someone you throw contested balls to, EVER.

Yes, let's coddle the thread of a player who got a full ride to ND, took another scholarship's spot, played with terrible effort, got every rep and opportunity over those who wanted to play, and then ditched the program.

There's not enough coddling going around for those that were born with the silver spoon, so happy to see he's protected here too.

It's not coddling. It's just letting the kid go. There's no need to bash someone. There's no need to continue to go ad nauseum about his skills and abilities. He's gone, let him go.

People read these message boards, parents, players, etc. We don't need to be out here talking shit about student athletes every. damn. thread. like you do as that CAN influence recruiting.

Hope it works out for this guy. Really was excited about his potential.

From my very amateurish perspective though, it did indeed appear that he did not in fact have that dawg in him. First thing Prister and I agreed on all season - and for that TM, I thank you.

His Dad being obsessed with message boards and so soft he blocks replies to his outspoken twitter is probably part of the problem.

And BTW I haven't bashed him, I've refrained but this thread should be fair game now that he's quit IMO.

I think we've gone full circle on this.

Most of us wanted to see him with another year of development. He feels a year behind where we expected him to be but now we won't see it in a gold helmet. I hope the new setting will allow him to flourish.

The best possible outcome is that we bring in a few transfer WRs who are more established and our young room continues their rapid growth by balling out next year.

And hopefully Washington returns to there historic mediocrity but Merriweather has a big year.

Tobias is a strange case of extremes.

Dude deserves credit for staying committed to ND in the first place, imo, and also deserves some credit for never turning himself into an off-field distraction despite the constant conversation surrounding his usage as a frosh, his mistakes on the field as a frosh, his (non?)-development as a sophomore, his seeming lack of effort, still finding ways to make a big splash play here and there, etc.

But he also does NOT get props for his play or development. Sure, maybe we can blame some of that on Stucky and Parker for poor coaching, development, gameplanning, involvement, etc., but Tobias bears some of the responsibility, too. There should be a natural progression for a dude in year two just from being around tbh, regardless of outside influences, but there didn't seem to be a whole lot of that.

Last, the lack of effort in certain situations just looked bad. So I get why there is some animosity or harsh criticism. Guy didn't fight back for the ball and didn't seem willing to deal with physical DB play when the ball was in the air. Never treated it like it should be HIS ball to go up and get. Just seemed to hope it was falling to him.

He's got the natural talent. Hopefully he develops a more competitive mentality at his next stop... unless it's a future ND opponent.

Excellent post. We have a tendency to expect too much out of highly rated kids in their first year while they are still adapting to the rigors of D1 FB and school. I would have expected to see some improvement in his second year, but I didn't notice it. It seems he hasn't realized the effort given in CFB needs to be substantially more than the effort given in HS. Good luck to the young man.

Which, if true, would seem to confirm that Freeman fired Stuckey expecting those guys to stay and they left anyways, lol.

That shit be funny. Players coach.
