Buchner to Alabama made some sense. Rees recruited him and coached him, which gives him a good shot of earning the starting gig at Bama.

This doesn't make a lot of sense. I get Styles has a brother there and his dad loves them, but let's be realistic here. If he wasn't going to contribute to ND's secondary, what makes anyone think he's going to contribute to Ohio State's? The common idea is that Styles would redshirt and have 2 years, but let's be real. Is Ohio State waiting a year for him to fall into a starting gig? I think he may be overselling himself a bit.

Ohio State fans have been restless with the state of their secondary the past few years, even with the new DC that got some improved results this year. They think the team should get more from both the corner and safety positions, so taking a flyer on a family name makes sense for the team… if the fans can be trusted about the status of their defensive backfield.

Makes sense from Ohio State's end.

Not from Styles'.

Ohio State has been taking flyers left and right to bolster the numbers in their secondary, on top of returning both starters from last season. So uh, why would you, Lorenzo, think you have any better shot of getting legitimate playing time there than the other 120 something other FBS programs.

They try to sell us that loyalty ain’t worth shit in the sporting world, but fuck that. Money and fame ain’t everything. You’re either with us or against us. This is a huge component of team sports.
The moment sonny went to osu the whole family was dead to me.

That would require him to scout better than he catches a football and he does fancy himself a footballer

Because Notre Dame has a better CB room than OSU

Is this sarcastic or do we?
Styles is CB4 at the absolute best at ND. I don't know where he fits on OSU's CB depth chart, but the fact that they brought him in is probably not a good sign right?

He’s CB4 for them as well most likely, unless he can’t beat out two freshmen, in which case he’s redshirting and learning for a year. So basically the same spot he would be in.

If he wants a fresh start after everything, it makes sense for OSU to pair him with his brother for DB depth, and makes sense for Styles to go to a place where he’s comfortable.

Yep…..I guess Chansi and/or Mike are not good at developing players.
Probably our 2 of our 3 best position coaches with DMC in the mix and top 5 at their respective positions. But yeah it's their fault your kid regressed. Way to kiss the whole ND network goodbye 👋 for no reason whatsoever.

I guess it’s Chansi fault Styles dropped 7 passes last year
Yup, it’s always someone else’s fault when you’re not as successful as showing up with your talent will get you. This is the lesson here.

God forbid the dude might have the awareness to think that maybe his sons situation at ND was partly his own fault

Why? That sounds like a very insecure response. So one sibling goes to OSU. ND needs to keep players regardless of where their siblings go. Just like OSU needs numbers in the secondary so does ND - if not more so.

7 is A LOT
Especially considering the number of reception he had. He had 7 drops and 30 catches... nearly 20% of the time that the ball hit him in the hands he dropped it. That's INSANE. Most NFL players are between 3% and 6% in drop rate. There were only like five or six guys in the NFL above 10% last year much less approaching 20%.

Too many drops in the NFL get you cut.

I think a more likely scenario in all of this is he (read his family) realized that Defense is his best move in regards to NFL aspirations and he approached the staff letting them know his intentions to either or both move sides and transfer.

ND played reluctant knowing our wr situation, tried to talk him into staying at wr before ultimately realizing that allowing him to move to D was only way to even potentially keep him.

This talk of he was told to just "jump in" defense drills when he wanted and he finally decided late in spring is real hard to believe. That sort of thing is always planned as far as what practice segments he would be where. You think Chansi or Mickens would just would be like *shrugs shoulders when they go to start a drill and a player just dipped unplanned?
