I know several people with North Dakota State degrees. I went there. My dad went there. All my friends went there. Sisters went there. Clemson is the Confederate version.

You go to places like Clemson if you need a piece of paper to hang on a wall. Again, I am not really ragging on the school. It serves a purpose.

Land Grant universities have like two purposes...

1. Agriculture schools - whether you call them Moo U or Farm Tech or anything else intended to be an insult, they have ag as a mission. Noble pursuit. Love our farmers.

2. Educate people for work in the state.

Clemson is fine. It's not Notre Dame. It's like comparing a Toyota to a Ferrari.

WAY too simple of a definition.

MIT is a land grant school, as is Cornell. Cal is too.

The Morrill Act set up schools that taught SAME. Science, Ag, Military & Engineering. Though many Ag schools play second fiddle in their own state, many are viewed as a better or the only option.

I'm a land grant guy. Im perfectly fine with my education.
Nothing inherently second fiddle about it. At the rnd of the day though, I could have gotten that same experience anywhere. Notre Dame is not that at all. None of them measure up to what Notre Dame offers in any meaningful measure unless a kid wants to be an engineer or an aggie.

It's also not fair to raise MIT and Cornell as examples of land grant schools. They are outliers. The proper examples to raise would be the Iowa States and TAMUs of the world.

Loy is reporting Shipley has locked in official visit for March 20-22 "plane tickets are purchased".

Some of you way under-rate "lesser" schools, to the point of being pretty damn arrogant. You can have a pretty nice living with a degree from anywhere if you do the right things.

One of the regs shat all over my alma mater years back even tho it’s a fairly well reputed private school in So Cal,... basically because it wasn’t Harvard. I thought at the time, ‘this is why other fan bases hate us,...’

What's with the quotes around lesser??

Notre Dame has ~5 equals among them in the FBS.

Thank you. Good stuff. The faith portion of that gives me a bit more confidence.

I would usually say that the faith thing will definitely play in our favor, but we are also recruiting against a coach that constantly tries to talk about his faith so I'm unsure how it will play out.

I am confident in the work that has been put in here and the type of fit Will would be here though.

While I agree on the surface, there's still a huge difference in a coach that talks faith, and an entire university founded on faith. You don't have to go visit a coach at ND to get your daily dose of Jesus.

And if he’s an Evangelical Christian, going to a Catholic school is a completely different world.

It’s a mixed bag for sure. “Faith” is not fungible.

Catholicism is too Catholic for many Protestants.

University Catholicism is too skeptical and/or liberal for many evangelicals—and even some Catholics.

My guess is that there is significantly more outward expressions of faith from the Clemson coaching staff. But there is also a much bigger disconnect between the probably sincere faith of those coaches and the secular and permissive attitude of the school in general, and the social lives of the players.

The institutions and rules and expectations at ND are certainly more Christian.

Dabo leads weekly testimonies/readings/prayers.

I think we have a very real chance but I think the 2 hour drive from home and Dabo's extremely religious habits will be too easy of a transition for Shipley.

I have no idea what's going to happen. Neither will surprise me.

I still think the competition at Clemson due to 5star RB last year will help.

I respectfully disagree. I got a relative on the '89 Irish team. He was a walk-on. I got a relative in the Clemson Hall of Fame for being a dominant defensive lineman.

Guess who the family takes more pride in?
Clemson vs. Notre Dame is not a discussion on any meaningful metric. Never will be. Clemson has more in common with North Dakota State in value than Notre Dame. It's a small ag school.

If the kid wants to do crop science, or live in the Carolinas for the rest of his life...then it's a fine choice. Otherwise, it's not hard.

This is mostly about the relative strength of tradition at the two schools, and we definitely have a big advantage over Clemson (and most other schools) on that front. The Tigers are very nouveau riche, so if that's something the Shipleys care about, we should emphasize it.

My post was addressing those who wanted to underline the "40-year decision" thing. That's most effective when we're competing against schools with poor Football ROI. The salary figures for Clemson grads compare pretty favorably to ours, so it's just not the tactic I would take here.

Is that ROI based on the presumed invest of a student or scholarship athlete?

Scholarship athletes. Same methodology I used here: (1) take the Payscale ROI data; (2) back out the discounts for tuition, general graduation rate, etc.; and (3) then discount that raw figure by the relevant GSR. Clemson's GSR for Caucasian football players is actually higher than ours right now.

This is kind of the key question to this conversation. The Clemson football team, and coaching staff, has a very close relationship with a church that is very prominent in South Carolina. It is a non-denominational church that started in Greenville and has grown fairly rapidly. They built a new church right next to the Clemson campus and that is where most of the players attend. Rumor is that the church is a front for money flowing to the players. Regardless of this rumor, this church and Clemson Football are extremely close. If Shipley is a Southern Baptist or non-denominational(most of those are closet Baptists anyway) then that could be a real draw for him and his family.

The church is NewSpring and if you Google NewSpring and Clemson Football you will see several message board threads pop up. Here are just a few.

And here is an article about how the church played a role in getting Trevor Lawrence:

Does anyone know what he is? It doesn't say in the story but Tony Dungy is a clue. And he's listed as an Evangelical Christian on Wiki.

I hope he doesn't attend Elevation Church - it's also a large non-denominational church here in the south. It is very similar to NewSpring.

"The type of people that they create and produce in program and what they value the most," Shipley said. "One thing that I love about Clemson is they really value religion in their program and that’s a huge deal to me. Academics will also be a huge part. Relationships with coaches and players and all that."

His older brother is at Penn. Certainly a sign that education is valued.

Clemson is as dirty as they come and Dabo using his faith to hide it is the worst part about it.

If he is still coming in March; that is where ND can impress him and we have a shot.

If he backs out in March, the chances of him coming here are slim.

I also think he is going to keep an eye on how ND uses Tyree this year as a freshman.

He’ll be committed by then so I highly doubt that plays a role.
