Spot on.

Use of stereotype works in NDs favor, weaker position group compared to Clemson = more playing time as feature back, but presence of an elite robin side kick. Opportunity and education vs distance and championship chances.

Furthermore, on the elite education, since we don't highlight it enough. There are many rankings to choose from (like AP, coaches, CFP), but 2020 Best National University Rankings as follows for major conference teams:

Stanford #6
Duke #10
ND #15
Vandy #15
UCLA #20
Cal #22
USC #22
Michigan #25
Wake Forest #27
Virginia #28
UNC #29
Florida #34
BC #37
Wisconsin #46
Illinois #48
Texas #48
Georgia #50
Ohio St #54
Syracuse #54
FSU #57
Penn St #57
Purdue #57
Miami #57
Pitt #57 (thinking the same thing, too many ties - one, okay, but five?)
Rutgers #62
Washington #62
Maryland #64
Minnesota #70
Texas A&M #70
Clemson #70
V Tech #74
BYU #77
Indiana #79
Baylor #79
Iowa #84
Michigan St #84
NC St #84
TCU #97
Colorado #104
Oregon #104
Utah #104
South Carolina #104
Tennessee #104
Auburn #104

The problem is he might want to major in football and Clemson currently has a better program than ND. Sometimes you choose a school based on your preferred area of study than for its overall rankings.

You think a football player wants to concentrate on football?

I’d say some want to go to a place that will best help them make it to the NFL. Some probably realize that most college players will never get paid to play football and are looking for what best sets them up for life after college. Many others probably just go where the girls are the hottest. No idea what this kid is prioritizing. If it’s the first, Clemson may be his best bet.

Not sure we've got a great case there either. I just did a quick ROI calculation based on Payscale's salary data and GSR, and ND is only offering ~18% more than Clemson. If it comes down to degree value v. competing for titles, we're probably losing that fight. We'd be better off emphasizing early play time, being our feature back, and culture.

In the past 5 NFL drafts, picks per school
Alabama 13 1st round, 46 overall
Ohio St 12 1st round, 40 overall

Clemson 8 1st round, 29 overall
LSU 4 1st round, 27 overall
Georgia 6 1st round, 24 overall
Michigan 4 1st round, 24 overall
Stanford 4 1st round, 22 overall
ND 5 1st round, 20 overall

Ben Koyack as the sole draftee in 2015 skews a little against ND.
Add 2014 draft - ND 8 picks, Stanford 6 picks, Michigan 3 picks, Georgia 2 picks, LSU 9 picks, Clemson 5 picks

Point remains, ND isn't a football factory, but over 6 drafts we have 6 less draftees than Clemson and 8 less than LSU. Sure Clemson and LSU are trending up and it doesn't fully explain how Clemson can appear in 4 title games in the last 5 years, winning two, with only a handful of more NFL prospects than ND (elite QB helps). While the recruiting has been unprecedented by Bama and Ohio St recently, ND is within one to two more NFL prospects per recruiting class to be a top 5 program in terms of talent. I hope Kelly is able to improve a few things as stated and it translates to on field success. If he can get more kids to believe they can concentrate on football, maybe not to the savant level as some other places, while benefitting from what ND can offer, then landing a Will Shipley type player will occur more frequently.

But wouldn't he have a better chance of showing the NFL his value at ND than at a school with a ton of other high 4 and 5 star RB? Lance Taylor can develop him into an NFL RB.

Is that ROI based on the presumed invest of a student or scholarship athlete?

I respectfully disagree. I got a relative on the '89 Irish team. He was a walk-on. I got a relative in the Clemson Hall of Fame for being a dominant defensive lineman.

Guess who the family takes more pride in?
Clemson vs. Notre Dame is not a discussion on any meaningful metric. Never will be. Clemson has more in common with North Dakota State in value than Notre Dame. It's a small ag school.

If the kid wants to do crop science, or live in the Carolinas for the rest of his life...then it's a fine choice. Otherwise, it's not hard.

Loy is reporting Shipley has locked in official visit for March 20-22 "plane tickets are purchased".

Maybe, though Bama has done well with a plethora of high ranked backs. I do like the job Taylor has done and hopefully he can be the difference.

I know several folks with Clemson degrees that are doing very well. None are farmers or in AG. A few execs, sales VP, a chemist, a business owner, and an engineer. Not a bad campus either. 3 of them are from the NE, which I thought was strange.

That's what they called Tractor Tech in W. Lafayette, IN and then they put a farmer on the moon.

I live in Boston and see a lot more young people around wearing Clemson stuff than you might think. I’d guess they’re recruiting more students from this part of the country.

Or people latch on to championship teams and buy their gear so they can claim to be fans.

Guys, we're getting way too loose around here with attribution. I want to be very clear that if you're posting information that is from a reporter at a premium site it should at minimum include a link to the tweet or article where you found the information. And if it's paywalled info, be judicious with what you do and do not share.

This is not necessarily directed at tom pendergast, it's more a general note as I've seen a lot of people recently grabbing info and the people at 247 are not thrilled about it.

In his defense, it’s a free article.

But point taken. I’ve laid way off on providing info. Loy was not happy.

Can they really do anything about it? I see paywalled articles posted on reddit's sports related subreddits all the time. Don't really see how that is any different.

I know several people with North Dakota State degrees. I went there. My dad went there. All my friends went there. Sisters went there. Clemson is the Confederate version.

You go to places like Clemson if you need a piece of paper to hang on a wall. Again, I am not really ragging on the school. It serves a purpose.

Land Grant universities have like two purposes...

1. Agriculture schools - whether you call them Moo U or Farm Tech or anything else intended to be an insult, they have ag as a mission. Noble pursuit. Love our farmers.

2. Educate people for work in the state.

Clemson is fine. It's not Notre Dame. It's like comparing a Toyota to a Ferrari.

There’s probably a bit of that but I don’t see the same types of people walking around in Alabama or LSU gear. Also see Clemson car window decals, which you don’t buy unless someone in your family’s going there.
Point being I think Clemson, as a school, is growing it’s student/alumni beyond the Carolinas and recruiting full-tuition-paying kids from other parts of the country. As some schools try to do.

My kid lived down in Greenville last few years. Really popular growing part of the US. Kids want to be there, whether in school or after graduation. Weather is good, economy is hot. Doesn't suprise me a bit that Clemson is desirable to an 18 year old. Toss in a good bit of success on the football field makes it a hard nut to crack.

Doesnt matter what the kid wants. Win over Mom and to a lesser extent, Dad.

Mom always wins. These are the rules.
