Why would he want to do that? I’d imagine he’s being recruited by some decent programs if he’s a 4 star.

The only place I saw him mentioned as a 4 star was the Lemming tweet in this thread. He might become one but as of now he's not receiving the acclaim his father did in HS. Maybe down the road he will, he has 2 season left to play in HS.

We've had this discussion in the recruiting forum a number of times over the years. I haven't looked at the NCAA rules in the past year or two. Back then ...

IF, the student athlete was NOT recruited by the school (NCAA defines recruitment, as mailings, phone calls, texting, visits to HS and/or campus official or unofficial, etc.) the individual can attend school under a employee tuition program and walk-on. I believe that was the MVG situation. MVG was elevated to a scholarship (becoming a counter) based on his merits and dedication as a walk-on and NOT because he was a 4 star recruited athlete. Transparent, no subterfuge.

Some schools abused employee tuition programs to circumvent the 85 scholarship restrictions ("Counters") which was why the NCAA put in a regulation to deal with it.

Obviously with Ron on staff, Ronnie doesn't ND mailing to learn about the program. Likewise Ron attendance at Ronnie's games is as a dad not as a recruiter. Ron can't make recruitment visits for ND in his current position, he's neither a position coach nor certified by the NCAA to do so.

But IF a university circumvents the rule, the recruit becomes a COUNTER and the school would be subject to sanctions.

IF Ronnie is a bona fide talent, the talent will lead to recruitment. Other schools will be watching. Currently 247 lists Ronnie with 3 offers, BGU, BUFF, and CMU. It's early.

I don't think is true. Bertrand visited campus but he still had the ability to not be a counter because it was an unofficial visit. Here are the relevant sections on counters and the sections referenced therein.

(c) Was issued a National Letter of Intent or a written offer of athletically related financial aid by the institution for a regular academic term.

15.02.5 Financial Aid.
“Financial aid” is funds provided to student-athletes from various sources to pay or assist in paying their cost of education at the institution. I believe RP3 would not yet be a recruited student athlete because I don't remember any off campus contact and he is not able to receive an NLI or official visit yet. I also believe any employee tuition rates would not count under 15.02.5.2 because by the time he would be enrolled, his father would have been an employee for more than 5 years. To me, that means he does not fit either of the criteria to be a counter once he participates in competition.

Well his only offers at CMU, UB, and Bowling Green. I think the walk-on/employee tuition option at ND is the far more enticing prospect. Worse case, he can do what Monty did and get a great degree and transfer out to start at a solid FCS/G5 school.

He was never offered. IIRC the confusing part was when he committed articles did not mention scholarship numbers so we were confused but none of the reporters could really give answers because he wasn't on scholarship but could be if we had an open spot.

There was also Liufau who was told before he committed that he might have to gray shirt if we don't have numbers.

I’d imagine he’ll pop up at a MAC school unless his parents want to pay for the Ivy League. Yale at $70,000+ a year isn’t for everyone.

yeah but financial need is a big part of the equation and father probably makes pretty good money.

I'd bet on MAC for the younger RP. If he goes to ND as a walk on he's basically agreeing in advance he has no shot. We'll sign a good QB every year.

That was my immediate thought. Hope it's not the case, but this is the perfect backup IMO. Definitely don't have to worry about him transferring, except maybe as a grad transfer. And who knows, maybe he has a Heisman or 4 in him.
