maybe Milton McKenzie picking FSU and Clark's knee issues have made this offer commitable

Was this really that out of the blue? Was he expected to sign somewhere else?

Because, like MVG, his dad is a university employee which means he's going to ND at a discount. So if he's on the football team he's going to be a scholarship counter even if he's not on a full scholarship (I'm pretty sure).

Could “on scholarship” just mean the standard scholarship he’d receive anyway as the son of an ND staff member? Think Monty Van Gorder.

Dang! Was hoping he’d end up at CMU.

It’s cool to have him. Ron Powlus is the first QB I can remember for the Irish.

Ima call it now, Powlus takes over for Buchner in a game where Tyler struggles, let's say in a bowl game vs LSU next year. And from that point on, we know that he's the answer at QB

I actually don't mind it. Kid wanted to be Irish from day 1. He's big. Solid arm. Knows the game.

Makes you wonder about BC..

This tells me either Clark is out (knee or otherwise) and/or we don't have ins on grad transfers. The Buchner era starts...now.

i think most folks expected he'd walk on at ND

Yeah, I think this is a contingency plan for if Buchner wins the starting job and we get QB transfers from either/both of Pyne and Clark.

So... can my friends that know football give me a read on Ronnie as a player? Why is he rated so low given measurables and pedigree?

Also, may be needed as a camp arm if Clark is out because of the knee. 2 qbs for spring would be bad

Do you guys think they held this back until ESD in fear that Buchner would flip due to the competition?

Absolutely shocked what BK said in his presser about taking two QB's. "Ron was someone we were recruiting from the very beginning. He was an early take for us. Wanted him part of our program from day one. We felt like we needed two quarterbacks."

I cannot tell if BK is full of it with that one or if they really like Ronnie Powlus III that much. To be going after 2 QB's from the beginning of the cycle and not offer more dudes (maybe they offered and didn't report) is dumbfounding. Especially seeing dumpster fires like USC get two top 100 recruits at the QB position along with Texas the year before I am surprised they got a MAC level QB as one of their dudes from the beginning. Makes absolutely no sense. Maybe you guys see something I don't but this screams a legacy commit/coach commit but not an actual talent commit. I just don't understand it.

Guys at ISD pretty much said that when you just need depth, this was a no brainer. The kid won't go anywhere and will stay committed and working hard. Sometimes you just need an Evan Sharpley.

My take was they want a permanent scout team QB and there is little chance of him leaving. I also think that if they do in fact go to the portal, there is a real chance Pyne or Clark could bolt, depending on the circumstance. I personally see this as a guaranteed depth play and nothing else. I do question why a PWO wouldn't work, but that is another story.

MVG didn't count to the 85, right? If so, that's gotta be what the Powlus situation is.

In regards to him being a take from day one, I'd guess he always had an offer to do this (PWO or similar). He never announced as he was waiting to see if anyone outside the MAC would give him a full blown offer first.

I would think so, similar situation to MVG. Works out pretty good this way, win/win from a scholarship standpoint and unless he really, really gets the itch to start and he can't unseat a guy he has every reason to be locked in and committed for 4 years.
