Penn has never had a great passing QB. A couple of good ones but not great. Was it Dreisbach that ended up not being too bad at meatchicken?

I didn't know Bulbs Ehlers was his Grandfather. I remember some old coaches trivia about Bulbs. Every coach he had in basketball is in the Hall of Fame. John Wooden at SB Central, Piggy Lambert at Purdue. John Russell and Alvin Julian with the Celtics and Red Auerbach cut him.

Yes! From the 21-24 Notre Dame will win at least 2 National Championship and Ronnie Powlus will win at least 2 heisman trophies and most likely 4 heisman trophies.

Had a rough first game begin his career. Did not start.

Haven't found the box score but Valparaiso held Penn to 87 yards total offense and 34 was on a TD pass from the starter to ND safety target Paul Moala.

At some point, RP3 came in. On the last drive with Valpo up 12-7 he was sacked 3 times and Penn gave it up on downs to end the game.

At home next week against Merrillville.

If he has half the talent of his father, he's a take 100%. Ron was in the wrong system at ND.

You can say that again.

Ron was to be Holtz keystone in transitioning from The Option to a Pro Offense. Holtz realized the good teams with enough time to prepare would stop the option. He never used the option after leaving ND.

At ND he lacked the horses for the ProSet on OLine and at WR. He had plow horses and a farmer at OLine Coach, Joe Moore who stymied Holtz in trying to execute a Pro offense. Holtz also lacked the assistant coaching talent at OC and QB to transition to a Pro Offense.

Who were the Coaches Powlus worked under?

Two head coaches, Holtz who had run the option was trying to transition to a Pro Set through the Blarney Offense and Bob Davie who didn't know what offense he was running. Both had a guy who ran a 5.0 40 trying to run option football. It's a miracle Powlus only ended up with two broken bones in his career.

Two QB Coaches/Off Coordinators were Tom Clements, a Canadian League QB, who also ran at QB for ND, and who coached Mirer, McDougal, and Failla ... all option QBs. And Dave Roberts who came to ND to get his coaching ticket punched by Holtz so he could move up to a major conference HC job. After getting fired as Baylor HC, Roberts joined up with Holtz again at South Carolina where he coached ... RBs.

I saw that tweet the other day and was wondering if it caused him any problems this year?

I saw Soph Ryan Lynch who's already committed to ND for baseball got a lot of clock (and press) at QB. Granted, Lynch has had mid 80's stuff as a freshman (and a lefty) so he's no average soph by any means. ND will be lucky to get him. That guy is worshiped in the baseball world and the kind of kid that gets a check right out of HS.

I'm guessing the Lynch girl who is an All American soccer player is his sister or at least cousin?

Caught a break when last year's starting QB and class of '20 ND baseball commit Ryan Lynch gave up football to concentrate on pitching.

First game out beat Valpo 21-3 but trailed into the 3rd qtr. Didn't have a TD pass or run.

Just watched highlights on hudl of what he posted yesterday. Big strong kid already. Has good feet but seems a little slow. Not a cannon for an arm but he is accurate and can throw on the run. Looks like he runs a similar offense to ND. Hopefully he gets stronger and can make some more deep throws.

What is the future status of Ronnie Powlus and Notre Dame's football program? With his Dad being the associate athletic director at ND, can he attend ND and participate as a member of the team without using a football scholarship? In other words, can he attend the university tuition-free based upon his father's employment, sort of like Montgomery VanGorder did? Didn't Van Gorder's son receive his football scholarship only after his father left the university?

Why would he want to do that? I’d imagine he’s being recruited by some decent programs if he’s a 4 star.

???

Is he attending ND? Is he being recruited by ND? He hasn't been offered by ND according to 247 and Rivals.

We've had this discussion in the recruiting forum a number of times over the years. I haven't looked at the NCAA rules in the past year or two. Back then ...

IF, the student athlete was NOT recruited by the school (NCAA defines recruitment, as mailings, phone calls, texting, visits to HS and/or campus official or unofficial, etc.) the individual can attend school under a employee tuition program and walk-on. I believe that was the MVG situation. MVG was elevated to a scholarship (becoming a counter) based on his merits and dedication as a walk-on and NOT because he was a 4 star recruited athlete. Transparent, no subterfuge.

Some schools abused employee tuition programs to circumvent the 85 scholarship restrictions ("Counters") which was why the NCAA put in a regulation to deal with it.

Obviously with Ron on staff, Ronnie doesn't ND mailing to learn about the program. Likewise Ron attendance at Ronnie's games is as a dad not as a recruiter. Ron can't make recruitment visits for ND in his current position, he's neither a position coach nor certified by the NCAA to do so.

But IF a university circumvents the rule, the recruit becomes a COUNTER and the school would be subject to sanctions.

IF Ronnie is a bona fide talent, the talent will lead to recruitment. Other schools will be watching. Currently 247 lists Ronnie with 3 offers, BGU, BUFF, and CMU. It's early.
