Hmmm... so if this guy's ratings make any sense, we play 5 QBs in the top 30 this season.

Two of them are very erratic, and therefore easily beatable by a good defense (BCs and Clemson's.)

That means we would only be facing down the barrels of three gunslingers: OSU, USC, and Stanford.

Giving our usual QB draws, that's not too bad. (I always look a little uneasy at a BYU QB though.)

I know its just one mans list... but how many first year starter guys like Buchner are on this list?

Our QBs, even the first year starters, have very consistently finished ranked in the 20-30 range for QBR at the end of each season under Kelly. So I'm certain that Buchner won't do that poorly. He probably just had to throw the kid in somewhere as an unknown commodity.

I'm all in on Buch, partially because we have to be, lol. Very excited for what the future holds while simultaneously nervous AF.

I think he does well. Could be a blessing in disguise he didn’t suit up for the spring game.

The thing about Buchner is he's like an 80% lock to get yards with his legs.

He's somewhere between 10-90% likely to be a great passer. I could see him launching into the CFB who's who with breakout performances. I could also see him struggling to read coverages and making poor decisions like we saw his freshman year.

I just hope he's taken the biggest jump in reading defenses and quickly making a decision. If he can do that, we win 10 games wihtout question. If he can add the longball to his game then we have a scary good team.

The + - for Buchner is large so I'm with Lucky

Buchner is going to be very, very good. The kid has the physical ability, and he doesn't have mechanics that are completely broken like a certain QB from the class of 2018 (or another certain QB from the class of 2015....). Pumped for his future at ND!

I have literally no idea what to expect from Buchner beyond his legs. How could anyone claim to know otherwise with any certainty? I could see both of those passing scenarios you mentioned as equally possible.

I think we’re gonna find out pretty quickly which one it is, though.

Sure - that’s why I do know he can run. What I don’t know is how he can perform as a passer when he’s the starter and playing against actual competition.

He put up big numbers against the worst competition in California, which isn’t his fault. He tried to fix that by transferring to the highest level, but he didn’t play his senior year due to COVID - which also wasn’t his fault.

He was brought in to mostly run the ball as a freshman, and looked like one against Virginia Tech, once they had a halftime to adjust to him being under center. He looked good in relief, but that’s a totally different ask than being the guy the defense planned for.

I was really looking forward to seeing him in the Blue and Gold game, but he got hurt. Again - not really his fault!

All I have to go off of are his physical tools, but there’s so much more than that at the level ND needs him to be at. Which is why I have no idea what to expect.

I really like Tyler. I think he’s a very talented player. My 2 main concerns, and this is nothing groundbreaking, are:
  1. Running style/injury. He’s thicker than Book, but he’s only around 210-215. My guess is we’ll have to have Pyne or Angeli start or get out us of a couple games this year, which both of those guys are more than capable of. It's tough to make it through a full college season at that size and with that expected volume of running.
  2. Reps. The kid has played one full season in the last four and that was against not great competition. How good is he going to be processing wise and decision making when the bullets are flying? I'm optimistic, but I fully expect there is going to be a learning curve in the passing game.
Cautiously optimistic is probably right with his combination of arm talent and athleticism giving the team a higher ceiling than with Coan or Book, even though I am very thankful for them both, the last few years. I also think TR is pretty good OC that is going to make it easy on him early on in the passing game (hey, hit 87 here) and put him in positions to be successful.

Every damn Saturday when this intro hits NBC. NBC has the two greatest intros in sports, IMO between this and ‘NBA on NBC.’

Plus the dulcet tones of Mr. Tom Hammond to try and bring your heart rate back to an even keel…

The squealing guitar lick gets me every time.

Favorite letter intro ever was Bob Costas 93. FSU.

I feel like the chances that he makes it through the season are slim to none. He had two non-contact injuries last year, and then hurt himself on stairs in the off-season. I just have a hard time believing that he’s going to be durable.
Too small a sample size i think. Kid's at an age where he's been lifting/growing. I'm hopeful.
