We are so bad at running the football.

And don’t you say otherwise or you’re a horrible ND fan

So people can’t disagree? Why so sensitive? I’m not being disrespectful at all. I just don’t buy what some are selling. I understand with our history why some are programmed that way, but I am not. I prefer a positive approach. A lot of people (not saying you) were confused that a large segment of this board thought we would be competitive. I’m just saying that the argument changes from “we can’t even compete with UGA” to “UGA is overrated and would be crushed by almighty Bama”. UGA is right there with. Bama whether we think so or not. I’d give a Bama a slight edge based on recent results, but UGA may very well beat them. It’s almost a pick em at this point

The boys played their hearts out. Based on the first two games, I expected another national embarrassment. Thankfully, ND avoided that. They competed all four quarters w/ a chance to win. Beat UVA.

Lea had a helluva game-plan w/ the personnel he was afforded.

Fromm is friggin’ unflappable. Zero sacks. Zero interceptions. Threw darts all night...even in tight coverage. I tip my hat to the young man.

This team will go as Ian Book goes. He needs an OL that lives up to their 4-star hype though. The OL will be what gets the most criticism all week regarding this game.

Why even hand off to TJJ? He’s not a feature back but it’s not his fault that Jafar can’t stay healthy & Smith was banged up. We need Jafar back ASAP.

I love Finke but he didn’t have a good night IMO. I think Keys is the better option going forward. Not trying to be harsh but you gotta put the best 11 out there on offense.

How many yards did Eichenberg cost the offense on flags? Inexcusable for a veteran like that.

Claypool is a baller and showed that tonight. You can tell he’s playing like he wants to prove he’s a first round draft pick.

I’m out of reps to offer at the moment, but great post. I will add that TJJ struggles to run as the feature back, but is a great blocker and can catch the ball when asked to.

He can't throw a deep ball, has happy feet, and isn't nearly as accurate as we all thought he was.

We have much different take aways from that game, because I thought he was very good in the pocket, didn't throw a deep ball because we didn't have WR that runs faster than a 4.6 in the stadium, and was accurate most of the game.

We looked better than Texas A And M today. Lea needs a pay raise or a handy. O needs to give the handy.... overall we fought well. Not enough to win. But did not give up. ( I see you Michigan). Let's go out and win a few more games

Recruiting is to blame, not the playbook.

I have watched other teams who recruit worse than us move the ball a lot more productively. Play calling is still an issue along with blocking schemes.

Not sure why, you'd fit right in. The current mood of the board is to sh1t all over the coaching staff and qb because we lost a night game at #3 Georgia on the last possession. Our fan base is embarrassing sometimes.

All I've said is that ND would get housed...badly...by Bama and/or Clemson. I think it's great that ND has moved to where we don't get obliterated by every upper echelon team in every big game. I'm also not delusional enough to think we would stay even remotely close with teams that are legit NFL teams. Jeudy, Ruggs, Waddle, Tua, and Najee will all be 1st rounders, and Devonta Smith will get drafted...and he's the 5th or 6th option. It's just not logical to think that a collection of mainly low 4* guys, with a lot of 3* guys, are gonna beat NFL studs. If you guys think that's not logical, so be it.

I kept looking for Tommy Tremble. Did we run multiple sets with him and Kmet?

This loss is on Chip Long and Autry Denson.

I thought we did great. Georgia is either not elite, or Bama/Clemson is not a gimme because I think Georgia is an exact clone of those two teams. Elite offenses and young studs on defense.

We just took one of those teams to the brink, and we have no OLine, elite RBs, and no speed at the wide out position.

This tells me that BK is the real damn deal considering the transformation he has gone through as a coach, and the hurdles he has to go through to put out a competitive product.

He played quite a bit from what I saw. He's just not going to get as much play when we've got Cole Kmet dominating at the same position.

We are 10 years in and the offense has wilted in nearly every big game. Long could no doubt do better (and Kelly hired him) but blaming the coordinator is just another Kelly excuse.

Kelly doesn't have these guys ready for big games but let's be honest, we are playing against young NFL defenses when we go up against Bama, Clemson, Georgia, OSU, etc. with a nice college offense.
These programs would look at Finke, Liam, and say 'next'. These teams would look at any perceived weakness at any position and eliminate it immediately because it's going to be exploited.
Georgia is being built to beat one team, Alabama.

Clemson is built to beat Alabama.

Alabama is built to overwhelm every team they line up against.

Ohio State is built to compete with those teams.

We are built to represent The University Of Notre Dame as Student Athletes and to try to be relevant and in the conversation.

This is why we will never be able to defeat these teams. We can come close sometimes during the regular season when they have one week to prepare and are banged up a bit. But that's it

Haven’t had a chance to read through but I’m sure Long is a topic of conversation. Just one or two misdirection runs would have done a World of difference.

We have a really good punter.

I was shocked at how hard the D played in the first half. But lack of a run game killed us in the 3rd and gassed our D.

ND was in a position to win this game and I fully believe they would have had people remembered to block on that last play.

ND is good but not elite. Georgia is not elite either. ND is winning every game left on the schedule.

I thought italics meant sarcasm or is that some other board...hard to keep up. Didn’t say you were being disrespectful. In fact, I respect your viewpoint. You remained pretty consistent w/o being Pollyannish...that’s fair. I agree about the goalpost moving. You can’t say UGA is light years ahead of ND talent-wise & then say they were overrated b/c the Irish had them sweating for four quarters.

You’d think ND fans could at least be a united front (outside message boards) and hang our heads high in a hard fought game where one top 10 team came up a bit short to another top ten team. This team can go as far as Book & the OL takes them. I’m less worried about Book than I am the OL.

Penalties (yup they get their own billing tonight)
A procedure penalty a half in a place like this is probably to be expected...what I saw tonight was egregious lack of discipline and situational awareness. Just unreal....but not totally unfamiliar to ND O-lines going back a ways.

Defense
The execution on D was good....when they weren't completely gassed. They significantly improved their tackling and pursuit tonight...made a huge difference. Familiar theme on Dbacks though...get your head around on pass plays...please. been struggling with that since Gary Grey...never changes.

Offense
I thought Book showed enough tonight to win...but between penalties, pass drop-fumble, missed assignments on key downs (ala the interception and last possession), head scratching play calls, and a lack of a running game...not sure what QB wins this game.

Fink somehow went from clutch to clutz tonight...hope that was an anomaly...unfortunate timing in any case

Special teams
Good...only bitch is, the last kickoff was not real smart...I think you should know where swift is, and not kick him the ball...lol.

Refs...so ND pass rushers did not get held tonight? Man, really?

I think if we win out we’ll be in the playoffs

I also think if Long is calling plays we’ll get beat. Again.

* Book played his heart out. Proud of him. That flea flicker interception was terrible, though.

* The fact that Autry Denson couldn't land a single elite RB prospect from 2016-18 despite absolutely elite OL play is inexcusable. Tony Jones is a solid player who fights hard but he's just not good enough.

* We need to attack down the field more with Claypool. My dude is a 6'4", 230 pound tank with speed and leaping ability. Use him.

* Chris Finke has been a huge disappointment this year. A whopping 24 yards in two Power 5 games.

* Lawrence Keys needs more reps in the slot. Lot of potential there.

* Cole Kmet is an absolute beast. Best TE since Eifert.

* Jeff Quinn is looking like a really bad hire. An experienced OL loaded with blue chip prospects can't get any push in the running game at all, and that's unacceptable. Pass pro was generally good, however, so maybe I'm overreacting.

* Liam Eichenberg. Oof. Hopefully he bounces back like McGlinchey did in 2017.

* Okwara and Kareem have been utterly invisible this year.

* MTA flashed quite a bit, I thought.

* The LBs played a solid game. JOK and White have made huge strides this year already, and Bilal looks solid after everybody deemed him the worst LB of all time after week one.

* Bracy and Crawford gave good efforts. Crawford had good coverage but it's tough to make a play when your opponents are 5* super stud receivers catching dime passes from an elite QB.

* Give Clark Lea a trillion dollars a year.

Overall, a great effort. Sucks we couldn't get the job done AGAIN, but we've come an incredibly long way over the last decade and while BK probably won't win an NC, he's going to leave a great foundation for the next guy.

Sooooo, does UGA not have NFL talent? A lot of analysts think they have as much or more than Clemson/Bama. We literally just witnessed our no-talent, overrated, ill-prepared team go out and take a jr NFL team with potential first and second round draft picks all over the place at their house (at night) and our fan base response is we can’t even compete with teams UGA is thought to be right there with......? I am at a loss

On that last play Book spun right into the pressure. Tony Jones was in a position to at least chip the d end coming off the edge and ride him to the outside. Banks and Eichenberg were also riding the d tackle to the outside. If Book steps up in the pocket and keeps his eyes down field he would have had a shot at hitting Finke coming across the middle for a 1st down.

If we win out, which seems like a realistic possibility looking at our remaining schedule, I'd put money on us making it into the playoffs. We're ranked highly enough that we'll be sticking around the 7-10 range as the teams ahead start playing each other.

Much better performance than I was expecting. A little bit better play calling and a few less penalties and we take this one.

I don't think so it looked like Jones was picking up the inside rusher and didn't even see the guy coming off the edge.

We beat ourselves. Blame Chip Long all you want but you can’t get 7 false starts most of which came on third downs and expect to win. Most penalties in a game under BK. I thought we had to play a near perfect game to win. We probably played like a B or B+ game and still took it the final possession with a real chance to win. 3rd quarter was rough but execution ultimately has to be there and it just wasn’t.

Have a good night, fellas. It was a tough loss with alot of impassioned posts and perspectives. One thing we can all agree on is Virginia awaits. Looking forward to another week on the journey with this board. Thanks and be safe everyone.
