Ronnie Powlus and his Penn squad got taken behind the wood shed last night against Valpo. Valpo is decent, but Penn really seems to be on the decline. They play St. X from Ohio in a few weeks. If they're like the St. X teams that I remember, Penn doesn't stand a chance.

Valpo's the best team in Northern IN again this year unless one of the FW teams are better than I expect. They have 3 DI linemen and they have a good HS QB who is back.

Monroe Central beat a Blackford team that is lined up for their best year since the early 2000s. We were without five key players as well.

Are there any Griffith guys in the house???

City laid the smackdown on Panthers last night 60-7. It was 41-0 at the end of 1Q. The Times had Griffith as #9 in the Region, MC was #2 but they should be down after losing their QB, RB and all but one of their OL/DL.

Griffith has Region #1 Valpo next week at home. Good measuring stick for the MC-Valpo showdown coming Week-4 for control of the DAC and the 5A Sectional.

First game without Jack Kiser, Pioneer squad lost to Lewis Cass 28-22. They beat them 44-0 last year.

Pioneer is on the. . . Everybody Else's Revenge Tour 2019

They still have good players, but Kiser made it easy mode and covered all flaws. I think we win state if we don't run into that buzzsaw in the semi-state game two years ago.

My hometown is bumping back up to AAA football this year. Highest level in the state. Very difficult to win when enrollment is 1/4 of the big boys and 2/3 of the schools we traditionally have a 50/50 shot of winning.

Pretty amusing, they dropped to AA for a couple years and the town was pissed. Now we are gonna go get our teeth kicked in like we do every year other than my junior year of high school.

On the bright side, we have probably the best D1 basketball prospect the state has had since Jeff Boschee set the Big 12 ablaze with the Jayhawks.

My Blazers beat crosstown rival Memorial for their last ever meeting.

Indiana is going know the name Elkhart Lions (stupid name) in most high school sports since Elkhart Memorial and Elkhart Central are now merging.

I went to the Gorman vs. Orem game last night. Gorman's underclassmen are scary good. Freshman Zachariah Branch had two TDs including this catch and run: <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">1st TD of the season, 45 yards catch and run by Zach Branch (c/o ‘23) <a href="https://t.co/Tn1DcKQGWW">pic.twitter.com/Tn1DcKQGWW</a></p>— Joe Arrigo (@joearrigo) <a href="https://twitter.com/joearrigo/status/1165083869227311104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 24, 2019</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> He also had an insane punt return called back for a block in the back.
Sophomore Cam Barfield, who doesn't have a 247 page surprisingly, had a huge night. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Is that Cam Barfield or Houdini?! 🕵️*♂️<br><br>The <a href="https://twitter.com/BishopGormanFB?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@BishopGormanFB</a> running back is the MVP of this game. <a href="https://t.co/mtrZlWoq0V">pic.twitter.com/mtrZlWoq0V</a></p>— YurView Las Vegas (@YurViewLV) <a href="https://twitter.com/YurViewLV/status/1165119001044934657?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 24, 2019</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> Started over a senior running back with 10 D1 offers. Sophomore Oregon commit Jadyn Ott is a transfer and not eligible yet. He will only had to the loaded underclassmen at the skill positions.
PSU QB commit Micah Bowens was garbage. Didn't connect on a single deep throw all night, multiple bad reads on the read option, stepped out of bounds a half yard shy of a first down on 4th and 5 in the red zone, etc.
Cyrus Moss was the most intriguing player to me. Long freshman who they had at outside backer and edge rushing. Made a couple of plays in the backfield and in space.

Was gonna go watch Tosh mangle my current HS of record, the Horizon Huskies but with Mater Dei coming to town, I'm heading over to Peoria to see if Centennial can hang with future Irish WR, Cristian Dixon & the nation's #1 recruiting juggernaut.

Really interested to see how Jaydin Young performs vs the OC All Stars. Young is a great all around HS player. He's had great games in blow out wins vs Jake Smith in the last 2 state championships. MD will be a whole different beast. This is a kid I might be calling for ND to take a look at later this evening. Has Purdue & Ivy offers.

<iframe class="twofourseven-embed" title="Player Embed" style="max-width: 100%" frameBorder="0" width="600" height="200" src="https://247sports.com/PlayerSport/Jaydin-Young-at-Centennial-240364/Embed/"></iframe><script async src="https://assets.247sports.com/Scripts/SkyNet/Shared/embed.js" charSet="utf-8"></script>

Mater Dei also has a back up QB by the name of Schmidt . . . Hmmm

Penn took another one to this chin last night. Homewood-Flossmoor came over from Illinois and beat up on Penn 35-7. Penn was without Paulus and will be for an extended time as he had foot surgery this week.

I didn't recognize Homewood-Flossmoor. Apparently they're pretty good and play in the highest class in IL. It doesn't get any easier for Penn, they welcome St. X from Cinci next Friday.

Valpo continues to be a freight train. 3-0 with back-to-back shutouts. They play Michigan City next week.

The staff at H-F are Region guys. HC Craig Buzea is from Griffith. He was at Portage then City before he took the H-F job. He's the one that turned the City program around after a century of being Hoop City.

Next week is probably the DAC Championship game at Valpo. Valpo should be the clear favorite. Merrillville is right there with City but the Pirates have to play City & Valpo on the road.

This Mater Dei team is the best team I've every seen. Better than the Rosen SBJ teams, Better than the Fertitta/Mack Gorman teams.

They beat Centennial 72-21.

Bryce Young is as good as Spencer Rattler. He was 31-37 for 528 yds & 7 TD's. His deliver is SO fast. It looks like a second baseman turning a double play. I've been skeptical of his viability at the college level but squash that. He's gonna be a serious problem at SC.

He has a ton of talent at WR to work with too.

ND '21 offer Cristian Dixon had a couple of TD's and 100% is a good offer. He's smoother than explosive but he's for real and hopefully ND leads as advertised.

'21 Kyron Hudson-Ware had 3 TD's and is built like a house. Might be a better LB prospect. If not, he's a future Anquan Boldin.

'22 CJ Williams needs to be offered immediately. He didn't have any TD's but he had numerous catches and probably has the highest ceiling. He's explosive and at 6-2, he'd be the guy you'd compare to Jordan Johnson.

The most interesting WR is Kody Epps. He named ND as an interest and wanted to visit but then the trail went cold with ND getting other WR commits. He was the best WR on the field last night. He runs great routes and was the only person to beat Jaydin Young last night (once). He will end probably up at a second tier PAC school or Boise and have a good career. He's good enough to be on any roster. I'd say think TJ Jones style or game.

Mater Dei has a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball too. Domani Jackson is a lock 5 star and deserves the full court press by every school in the country. ND hasn't offered. '21 CB Jaylin Davies is a kid who I liked for ND when he was UR now he's a 4.5* with offers from everywhere, ND hasn't moved. Lastly, Raesjon Davis is an animal.

One D guy ND could make an early statement with is '22 OLB/Shark prospect David Bailey. He's gonna be All World and LSU is his only offer right now.

On the PWO front: There are two Joe Schmidt types on the team. '20 S/LB Nate White is a Capt / 3 yr starter and committed to Penn and Dean Neeley is a Capt LB who has camped/visited at ND.

On Centennial's side:

I'm off Jaydin Young for ND. He's a great HS football player and he looked good vs. Mater Dei on both sides of the ball but he's 5-10 175ish and needs to play safety. Mater Dei threw at him one time and Kody Epps beat him for a TD. They game planned away from him the rest of the game. He lines up at CB, Nickel, FS and Mater Dei threw away from him 36/37 times. Respect. Besides being undersized, he caught a quick post and had a 10 yard lead on Domani Jackson at the 50 and Jackson caught him at the 10. He doesn't have the speed I want. Still, he's another guy like Epps that ends up having a great career in the bottom half of the PAC or the MWC.

He's the younger brother of former 4 yr Nebraska starting LB Dedrick Young who went on the the NFL.

Penn got taken behind the wood shed again last Friday; lost to St. X, 37-7. Their schedule lightens up the next two weeks before closing out the season against New Prairie, Elkhart Central, and Mishawaka. They'll probably lose to NP and Mishawaka.

Crus, Valpo beat Michigan City 42-21. The only team left on their schedule that I can see maybe giving them trouble is Merrillville. Valpo is now ranked #2 in the state.

You should go check a New Prairie game out. They've got a future Irish OL named Hunter Whitenack. 6-7/325 and there's no bad weight. Looks like he just walked out of a WWE ring.

Yeah, didn't have much hope for City vs Valpo. Next year should be a good bounce back year for City and '21 even better. They lost all but one of their OL/DL guys from last year's squad.

Poor Valpo, get lucky enough to get bumped down out of 6A which usually avoids a MIC team of the century type but they picked the wrong year to do it. The MIC ishistorically down, Avon's currently #1 and your prize for getting to the 5A state championship? An azz whoopin from the best team in IN, New Pal.

That's what Hank South & Wiltfong said yesterday but even if Biggins flips, it will all come down to who the coach is next year. If Helton survives, Young's going there. If they bring in an All Star hire like Urban Stoops, he's staying. If Harrell gets the job, he's staying. It would take a bad hire to make that happen. He's got a favorable depth chart to take advantage of in LA. The fact that his conference rival, DJ Ukelele is going to Clemson makes it interesting in that it could be a continuation of their rivalry into college but I'll say he ends up at SC.

Buzz is a hell of a guy, and a hell of a coach. Speaking of Griffith, they had their window with the trio of Radtke boys, but have not done much since. The blood feud they had with Hobart in the mid to late 90s was the stuff of legends.

Avon is #1 in 6A right now but I wouldn't count Warren out quite yet. Their only lose was by 3 to Trinity...same Trinity team that beat down Carmel by 27.

You're right though about bad timing for Valpo, 5A's New Pal is probably the best team in IN right now...they'll run Valpo out of the building. I know New Pal already beat Center Grove (2 years in a row) but I'd like to see them get out of that shitty conference and start playing a better schedule.

In other IN HS football news - 2A's #1 Scecina plays their annual game against 4A's Roncalli this week. The Crusaders haven't beat RHS since '93 or '94 but The Rebels are on the skids having not won a game yet. Is this the year Scecina pulls off the W??? - my friendly wager with some buddies that says "yes".

Avon is a paper tiger. Warren would, maybe will, beat seven shades of shit out of them.

Wow, I didn't know that. NP isn't known for putting out legit D1 talent. They'll put out a MAC player every 2-3 years but thats about it. New Prairie is all country kids so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that he's 6'7", 325 pounds as a sophomore.

Marian takes on Deontae Craig and Culver Military in three weeks. I might go see how legit he is.

Next week 2A and 1A’s #1s square off in Scecina and Lutheran.

Lutheran hasn’t even had a football program for that long. Pretty impressive how far they’ve come in such a short time.

Hell hath frozen over.

I lived long enough to see lil old New Prairie beat mighty Penn in football. Final score 21-17. And I thought the world had come to an end when Hobart had a losing season under Don Howell.

Cougars are led by QB Chase Ketterer who sounds like he has a good chance to be a PWO QB/ATH for ND. He and big Hunter Whitenack just visited for the UVa game.

I’m not surprised at all. New Prairie has been good for a while now and Penn is having a really down year. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Penn lose next week to Elkhart Central and their season finale against Mishawaka.

I think the MIC is down this year. Avon may be the next 6A champ.

I still havent fully bought in to Avon yet, but they are definitely more than a paper tiger, like I said earlier.

*Did anyone see/hear about how Warren lost to BD? It was absolutely brutal. BD missed the tying FG as time expired. Flag because Warren ran out to celebrate before ball hit ground. Rest is history.

Regardless, Warren doesnt look like Warren this year, but nobody really does. 6A is wide open. Should be a fun playoffs.
