Come on over and join the party.

http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/notre-dame-football/304392-nds-talking-heads-good-bad-ugly-4.html

He's been writing more recruit interviews than all 5 paid sites combined from his bunker in the arctic circle. All he needs is Twitter, Instagram and a cell phone. Though I'm sure he will offer to cover The Opening LA, SF, Honolulu and Cabo Regionals because he's a team player.

Sure you can do a lot of it by phone, but if you want to actually break news you've got to have relationships, which takes face time. So sometimes you've got to talk to recruits in person. And the coaches. Probably even more so the coaches.
I'm sure they've got a plan - and I don't think all ND reporters must live in South Bend - I'm just curious to see how they work it.

This isn't an industry secret, but many of the beat guys (at least for recruiting-- the team itself is a different story) don't live very close to the school they cover. One reason is schools recruit from all over, so you can't actually have boots on the ground meeting kids in every corner of a state or country. Another reason is the industry is pretty lazy. They all mostly know each other and "steal" from each other. It takes a matter of minutes for news to spread, regardless of who actually "breaks" the story. This reason is probably a big part of why many say the premium sites are a dying industry.

I'm friends with a guy, here in Nashville, who covers recruiting at Rivals for a P5 school, hundreds of miles away. Most of the kids like at least a little bit of attention (huge ego stroke), so he just calls them up and introduces himself, and they'll almost always talk. Coincidently, he works about 15 hours...a week. Rivals only requires him to Tweet and write so many times a week and month. This type of work style and hours are the norm in the industry, not the exception. Multiple beat guys for ND (from all the different premium services), and every school, are guilty of this as well. Guys in the industry busting their asses and putting in 50 or more hours a week are definitely the exception.

So how does your buddy get sourced with the coaches/recruiting staff? Because - if you cover a program for more than one cycle - those are the relationships that matter. And those seem like the ones that are harder to develop unless you're physically present.
I get how you can call up a recruit - or even his high school coach - and get his side of the dance by phone (and how you can't possibly spend much time with them all in person for it to matter). But why would Mike Elston give the time of day to some rando blogger calling from British Columbia? He may if he sees him regularly and has a relationship, but it's easy to ignore a phone call. And if you can't talk to Mike Elston, or other assistants, or the recruiting staff in the Gug, how do you have any idea what's actually going on in a recruitment? Or - more important to your readers - what's going on big-picture with recruiting at the program they care enough about to subscribe to a pay service.

Why would Elston talk to random Scout guy? He talked to him before you knew he had the job.

The bottom line is getting in touch with recruits with ND interest is job 1. That's SIMPLE as sh!t with Twitter and IG.

I'm not following you(?)

It's weird for a recruiting analyst to contact recruits via Twitter or Instagram?

The bolded says it all. And we know your dinosaurish stance so shouldn't you have spared us with your FIFY?

I'd say Im more tolerant of it than some
I mean I'm 29. What's that half ur age? Being recruited just 10/11 years ago, as opposed to 40, i know I would not have wanted the Jake browns of the world hitting me up on the gram for some interview.

But maybe I'm just a private person?

I don't do paid sites, for multiple reasons. But my continued visit to this site still feeds the beast.

Anyways, go Irish.

Still mad respect for u NDC

OK. In this case maybe. But you're saying half the recruiting reporters in the biz work remotely, which seems hard. If that's the case it's no wonder the paid site business is dying. I'd wonder what I'm paying for.
I'm not ragging on 'Couv. Good for him for getting paid to do something he obviously loves. I'm just legitimately curious how this works. If most of the business is just being IG buddies with 17-year-olds it's no wonder there's so much garbage on recruiting sites.

I happen to be a journalist. Not in sports but I've worked at local newspapers big and small for 15 years. And while I certainly call lots people on the phone and use social media to develop sources, I also know the value of showing up in person, shooting the shit, talking to people offline. You learn a lot that way, and you build trust. If you're going to break stories no one else has - which is the coin of the realm when it comes to recruiting reporting - you need to have relationships. They need to trust you. Especially when you're dealing with, say, assistant football coaches and recruiting staff at one program who you'll be going back to again and again for years. Being there, and continually showing up, is how you get them to take you seriously, and tell you things they don't tell just any schmo who calls the SID's office. And it would seem like the coaches are the ones who have the best handle on what's really going on big-picture.

He decommitted from Minnesota after visiting Michigan and getting an offer. Sounds like Michigan leads but we're st least getting some sort of a shot to change that, if we want to that is.

So I'm kinda ready for another commit. We've been pretty dry in that department lately (thats not a bad thing though). Anyone on commit watch this weekend?

I'd like to see Justin Birdsong get offered and commit.

I think we would all like to see Kevin Austin commit this weekend. That would give Notre Dame two more trees at receiver in the 2018 class.

I don't know who else is visiting, but I hope Stepp and Co. are able to get some guys this weekend.

To my understanding, Birdsong is quite a ways down the list of DBs we are recruiting. Do not expect an offer.

Kevin Austin is borderline elite..... If I'm allowed to use that word on this site. Either way, he's ND's best chance at a game changer at WR.

I think Kevin Austin could commit this weekend and Austin is a true stud IMO.

We can wait on Birdsong and IMO ND would be reaching pretty early in April for him. Let the DB board play out a little bit

Can someone explain why we want a second RB in this class? Also, why offer

Lyn-J Dixon .8812
Jahmir Smith .8603
Lavonte Valentine Not Ranked

Over

Ronnie Walker .9057
Maurice Washington .9030

Who have both visited in the past six months and are consensus 4 star recruits?

Thanks

Don't let those rankings fool you, all 3 of those running backs have very good offers; offers that wouldn't lead you to believe that 247 has them as 3:s:. College staffs don't go up and down the 247 rankings and offer them because they're a 4 or 5 :s:

I think they're trying for 2 running backs because you just don't know what the future holds after the 2017 season. Does Josh Adams go pro? Does someone get pissed off that they aren't getting the amount of carries that they think they deserve? Markese Stepp is going to be a big back and I don't see him running a 4.4 anytime soon. Maybe they're wanting a back that can hit the home run every time he gets the ball.

I have no idea about why Ronnie Walker has gotten frozen out up till now. He was my #2 fit at RB for ND a year ago behind Stepp. Straight up good kid with skills. I also LOVE Washington's film (and it's from his soph year cuz he sat out last year per transfer rules) but there are whispers out there that he may be trouble. I hope not, just saying that's what I've gathered. Mike Sanford was on him early, Polian has known the kid for years and still no offer. It's either books or the whispers i mentioned.

If ND could get Valentine, they'd have the lightning they are looking for. He's all world fast like closer to Anthony Schwartz fast than to Braden Lenzy fast. He's fa-fa-fast. He's not coming to ND though. He's going to a schools with a big time track program.

I'm this close to saying go all in on Johnny Adams of Ben Davis. I think no one will rise farther this season than him. He's an elite athlete with an NFL body to match his NFL measurables. He just plays with a really good dual threat HS QB who doesn't hand the ball off very often.

Do any of the film junkies have a preference on who we offer first between Hallett, Campbell and Hampton? Seems like they bring three very different qualities to the table: quickness, speed and length.

I agree that the rankings don't matter and have not an enormous relation to talent. However, with that being said, Ronnie Walker is a consensus 4* recruit, has been offered by Vandy, Virginia, Duke, and Northwestern which covers the elite academic institutions, and he has offers from Michigan State and Virginia Tech which cover some higher football levels. I just hope the staff does not pull the move of inviting a bunch of lower ranked guys and giving one an offer at Irish Invasion

I'd take Campbell last. He's just too raw. Birdsong would be my next man out.

I'd take Hallett and Hampton right now then hold out for Griffith, with Holland and Dowell a first come first serve take if Griffith passes by a set date before school starts.

That gives you two true CB's in Gervin and Hallett.

A FS w/ CB skills in Allen.

A 6-2 CB in Hampton who if he grows out of CB is Allen's back up at FS (redshirt him 100% to put a year between him and Allen)

And 1 of 3 very athletic DB's all of which I think end up at safety.

As much as I like Walker, I would be fine if ND offered this kid. He's going to explode.

5-10.5 - 195lb ... Greg Bryant frame and combine measurables.

May want to update the OP on Christian Turner. I don't think he's considered HOT any longer.
