I wasn't aware a ND coach was on here posting we were taking 5 WR's. I'd happily wager large amounts of money we don't take 5. Obviously that's hypothetical because this is the internet. I'm not arguing or saying anyone is wrong, things are fluid but as of right now no chance unless someone wants in we can't say no to after we're full. The number 5 is all hearsay and I have yet to see anything backing it up, im not questioning the coaches I'm questioning a mythical number that somehow somewhere probably got twisted because it defies logic. If it comes from a recruit understand they don't know what' they're talking about all the time. Malik Vann said ND was full at his positions yet we still continue to offer and recruit SDE's, and same with WDE for good measure.

We probably get to 22ish, that's still slightly small considering our needs in the Dbackfield and or need for elite talent infusion on the DL. To have 23% of our class tied up into what isn't one of our biggest needs would be beyond silly. If you add 3 more WR's and we take 22 that's only 8 more scholarships available. We need at least 2 more Corners, bare minimum 2 more OL (3 preferred), at least 3 more DL, That's 7 and that doesn't include an APB, TE, extra OL, another LB, another Safety or a Rover. If you look at the offers it just doesn't make sense.

Fair enough. I'm not sure anyone can guarantee that the number of WRs that the ND staff is looking for is 5.

I'm just saying, that, if it is in fact 5, or 4, or 3, that I think they have earned the trust that there may be good reason for that. That is all.

is the 2018 recruiting mojo still here or has it disappeared?

Do you realize to take 22 would put us at 97 scholarship players? That means 12 players would have to leave the program and we aren't talking about graduating players. I know we always say it doesn't matter, the numbers always work out. But sometimes the numbers are what they are and you end up taking a small class. You don't think Clemson, coming off a NC, would have liked to have signed 22 or so this year? They signed only 14. They simply had no more scholarships.

I can see a scenario where we get near 21-22... but it depends on attrition and early leavers. I've put a "+" next to early leaver candidates and a "*" next to potential transfers/retirees/other. I've flat out removed the names of people I think are gone, and there may be some errors, but I think this is accurate.

So that puts us at 16 available scholarships... with 5 additional spots open if we have guys have some big years and opt to leave... that gets us to 21. Odds of that happening? Very little without a coaching change. But it's possible someone pulls a Troy Niklas. Let's say we have zero early leavers for the NFL... I see 9 other guys that are pretty prime transfer candidates or borderline for being asked back for a 5th year like Weishar. Realistically, I'd be surprised if we don't lose 5 guys total from either the 14 I marked or someone getting themselves in trouble which would put us in the ~21 range. We probably won't have a good idea until December of what the real number will be.

He's out of eligibility after this year regardless and I'm trying to look at 2018 recruiting. If you see any errors, let me know I typed that up pretty fast off of Domina's list.

Actually it's three WR's and one TE or four WR's. And according to Sampson on the podcast the one WR they like the best besides ASB is Jahan Dotson.

on a podcast from driskell...he said he had work to do before he was realistic

ND "Invites" back their 5th Year Seniors. They aren't guaranteed spots. So with that logic, ND has 65 returners and 12GS. You have 20 slots right now. There will be attrition (Medical, Transfers, NFL) so more spots will open up.

You left off Jay Hayes, Anthony Bonner, Tyler Newsome and Drue Tranquill. Almost no chance Wimbush leaves early. Unlike Kizer he's in no hurry. Weishar will be back because of the offense utilizing two TE's so you need numbers there. White and Coleman have told Pete Sampson they have no intention of leaving, want their degree. Bars and Mustipher will be back as 5th year starters which you want on your OL. Hoge isn't going anywhere. Barajas and Ruhland I could see as possible transfers. Adams with a big year and being a RB is a definite candidate as an early NFL entrant. EQ? Wait and see but's not Will Fuller.

Newsome: Thought he was out of eligibility, didn't realize he didn't play in 2014. So that's definitely +1. Meaning we've got 15 open spots by the rough count above.

Tranquill: Does he get another year from the ACL tear in '15? IF so that makes it 14.

Jay Hayes and Johnathan Bonner: Did not forget them, I don't see any reason to believe they'd be asked back over a top prospect. Neither has done anything of note on the field. Even if asked back, each would probably grad transfer unless Hayes has a breakout year out of nowhere. We have a ton of bodies on the DL right now, no need to hold unproductive veteran players for depth. I could be wrong, I just don't see it.

Weishar: That's why I included him in numbers but gave him a *... he could also opt to grad transfer even if asked back if the playing time isn't good enough here and he thinks he could get more targets somewhere else.

So basically we're at 14 open spots and realistically could have 1-2 early leavers for the NFL (no one at all pegged a guy like CJ Prosise for leaving before his eligibility was up in the spring before the '15 season, so things change in a hurry and/or people make crazy decisions sometimes) which would put us at 15-16. So the way you get from there to 21-22 is attrition of 6 guys... somebody like Weishar goes searching for more targets, or Tiassum flunks out of school, or Barajas goes looking for PT buried on the depth chart, or some mystery off the field trouble happens. Historical averages tell us that 3-4 leavers is likely... which would put us right around the 19-20 number most people are talking about. As you said, getting to 22 spots in this class would take massive and unexpected attrition.

Yes Tranquill qualifies for medical redshirt so he'll be back. If you can get back 5th year OL and DL you take them if they can help you and both Hayes and Bonner can. We always complain about our lack of depth on the DL. Huge advantage to have 22-23 year old physically mature men on the line often times going against 19-20 still developing kids, especially if you aspire to be a championship team. Now if find some 5 star DL stud then you re-think that. But I don't see us getting that rare guy. The guys we are recruiting are going to need at least a year or two of development to be championship level players. Most of the guys we are recruiting on DL realistically need a year with Balis. That's where the 5th year guys pay an important role. BTW Bonner did nice work with the opportunities he had last year. No question staff would want him back. It was always the plan with him (also with Ade) to RS first year then expect productive football from them their final two seasons.

I think unexpected is harsh. It happens every year. We will have a class of 23 and still be short of 85

Can you name the last time we lost 6 guys to transfer/dismissal/retirement is a single season? I can't. I think the number is usually about 3.

Notre Dame is in a position to be a little more picky with who they take so that helps with 2018 numbers at this point. However, if Braden Lenzy, Micah Jones, Amon-Ra, Kevin Austin and Michael Wilson want to come, you take them. Lenzy could end on D and Jones could be a TE. Those two give you some flexibility when it comes to "WR numbers".

Or if Notre Dame land 3-4 WRs and lands a Joshua Moore, who will play on both sides of the football, then you have flexibility too.

The numbers come into play on the defensive line as Notre Dame is gaining traction with a lot of the recent offers and guys they have had offers. You always want to over recruit DL, but you also can't have 4 3-techs in the same class.

Also, I do think Notre Dame will likely have more roster movement after spring ball. There are likely freshmen or guys buried on the depth chart that see they don't fit into Elko's defense and could end up leaving. It happens with a new OC and DC, esp with a transition that essentially eliminates a linebacker position for the most part.

I remember maybe two years ago Michael Deeb and the Tight End that partied too much (maybe Hausman?) retired unexpectedly due to injuries. I always assumed that that was a forced retirement situation similar to how OSU and Michigan operate. I've also wondered that if we go well over 85 and there's not a ton of attrition whether we would similarly see two or three medical retirements from some unproductive players. Am I totally off base here or is that a possibility even if we'd prefer not to admit it?

Those are including 5th years and early leavers. That is obviously not what I was talking about or what I said, as those types were already included in the numbers I was discussing.

The only people on that list that qualify are Justin Brent and Corey Holmes... voluntary leavers before their 4 years are up. So two guys.

Correct. And even in Holmes case he graduated in the summer so he got his degree and is now a graduate transfer with two years eligibility much like Freddy Canteen.

Elated is a new one. I have no idea how to explain DL recruiting right now

What 'shade said. We'd be nuts not to ask back Bonner and Hayes. True they haven't done a whole lot to date (in very limited playing time and last year's schematic confusion) but they've both got two years of eligibility yet. We are always short quality depth on the defensive line and they'll both be physically mature, experienced players at a position where that stuff matters. More likely to help us in 2018 than our typical d-line recruit, for sure.

Can you name the last time we lost 6 guys to transfer/dismissal/retirement is a single season? I can't. I think the number is usually about 3.

Ok then, between 2015 and 2016
Corey Robinson
Steve Elmer
Max Redfield
Grant Blankenship
Doug Randolph
Mykelti Williams
Tyler Luatua (and then he came back and never played)
Plus all the guys who went pro.

There's probably a couple more I'm missing. We lose plenty every year.
