Has that ever canceled a practice before?

No, that's why I was worried it could be something worse. Seriously, there is no reason to run with this idea but it's really odd for him to cancel a media viewing day. Maybe he just saw the guys were bought in and giving 100% effort and need some recoup time.

Wasn't the practice canceled immediately before the announcement of the Fulton 5 back in 2016?

Right, but they knew had travel built into the schedule. It's not like they woke up at Culver and thought, "shoot, we need some time off now to get back. Didn't expect this"

But, I'm guessing Kelly just has a finger on the pulse of the players and can tell a day off would help recharge everyone's batteries.

He probably wants everyone rested for media viewing ;)

DON'T PANIC......they had the media group show the reaction from the players learning they had the day off....BK had a big smile...this is not a bad thing, thinking the players are giving great effort and also they have the tracking thing related to their health so maybe this was prevenative as well

I believe Wimbush will be improved but whether or not he plays at a high level will depend largely on the receivers. They have to get separation, whether it's with pure athleticism, route running or finding the soft spot in zones, they need to get more space than they did last year. Wimbush's accuracy and confidence will improve as his mechanics improve but he'll never be the QB who can consistently complete passes in tight spaces.

Based on Kelly's comments, it seems like Boykin is doing his part and Claypool has shown significant improvement. There's a ton of potential at tight end too. If these guys can emerge as legitimate weapons in the passing game, he'll be pitching the ball to a field full of 6'4''+ targets. That's the best possible scenario for QB lacking elite accuracy.

Maybe it's BK's retribution for the media asking about Dexter, despite the fact that they all know what the deal is lol

Just four hours ago Pete Sampson published an article on The Athletic about how ND is finding ways to get extra rest into the schedule and avoid a November collapse this season.

Coaches love to do the surprise day off thing in camp when a team has earned it. Refreshes everybody and they come back working harder. Back in the day when I played in college our three a day camp always ended with reporting to the local swimming pool for the third practice. We never knew until Coach broke us down and told us to report for to the pool that night. Still some of the most beautiful words I ever heard.

Exactly this. If you had to design a group a receivers for an inaccurate qb to work with, they'd look a lot like ours. Just need everyone to take that next step.

Or it could be as simple as he built an extra practice into the schedule to reward the players for working hard by canceling one practice. It seemed weird to me when the practice schedule came out that they had so many days in a row without a day off, but that was probably so the players don't drag waiting for the day off, so they still have to report on time to keep up the discipline, and so they can't go out and doing something stupid the night before knowing they didn't have to practice the next day.

Great, let's not practice in August to bring on a September collapse, instead

I really do think the rest issue is completely under-appreciated. They said they were going to prioritize it a couple of years ago, but they didn't deal with biggest culprit--late Saturday night flights. They need to keep them at the away site in the hotel for the night if its a late game. Does any college student do homework on Saturday? Of course not.

I’m not sure if they’re doing it for all the away games but they’re doing it for the Navy game according to Pete. Academic staff will be joining them so they can get as much homework done during the trip.

That is an excellent, if overdue, decision.

Yep McGlinchey was actually interviewed for the article and he said he’d take rest and staying a day over red eye or late night flights every time. Hope we see the dividends this year.
