Since they won the SB in 2008, they missed the playoffs, lost the SB, lost wild card, missed playoffs two consecutive years, lost wild card, lost divisional playoffs, lost conference championship.

For fun I went back and compared this to the Bears. Who made the playoffs only once since '08 and lost in the NFC championship game. Could be worse, could be the Browns.

So they've represented their conference in the Super Bowl multiple times in the past decade. in theory, they should only represent the conference every sixteen years. What a dumpster fire.

I hate Mike Tomlin. I really really do. But the Steelers are among the best run franchises in American sports.

I'm confused at what you are arguing about? You read what you quoted right? In the AFC, Colts and Packers have had similar success. Then you look at the Patriots and it's astonishing what they've done compared to the rest of the league.

Top 10 teams according to random google search:

1. New England Patriots — 122 wins (9 playoff appearances, 1st in AFC East)

2. Indianapolis Colts — 110 wins (9, 1st)

3. Pittsburgh Steelers — 101 wins (6, 1st)

4. Green Bay Packers — 98 wins (7, 1st)

5. San Diego Chargers — 97 wins (5, 1st)

6. Baltimore Ravens — 96 wins (7, 2nd)

7. Denver Broncos — 95 wins (5, 2nd)

8. Dallas Cowboys — 93 wins (4, 1st)

9. Seattle Seahawks — 91 wins (7, 1st)

10. New Orleans Saints — 90 wins (5, 1st)

They're among the 10 best when it comes to wins and playoff appearances

I'm mostly just confused as to how you really feel about the Steelers, are they a perennial wild card type team or a team who has averaged an AFC Title Game appearance like every 3 years?

I did probably get distracted while reading that post though, no doubt.

I don't get after the Steelers for their draft strategy at all, or free agency....i get after them for coaching..... and coaching.... and coaching.

I'd take Hue over him right now but I get this.

I also dislike him... he's like the hoodie... I dislike him, think he's a jackass, but respect and acknowledge he's rather good at what he does.

Lmao. The dude has led his team to the playoffs in 7 of his 10 years in Pittsburgh and has been to 2 Super Bowls with a ring to show for it. It is asinine to me how some Steeler fans don't like Tomlin considering who else is out there in the NFL. Other than about 6-10 teams, the rest of the NFL is a coaching carousel. He's probably a top 5 coach in the NFL; at worst, he's top 7.

This isn't directed towards ACamp, but no one can really knock Pittsburgh's way of drafting. Last year they made it to the AFCCG with almost ALL OF THEIR 2016 DRAFT PICKS BEING MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS. Not only are they pretty consistent hitting on a player in the 1st round, but they always find diamonds in the rough after the first round: Antonio Brown (6th), LeVeon Bell (2nd), Martavis Bryant (4th), Stephon Tuitt (2nd), Alejandro Villanueva (UDFA), Javon Hargrave (3rd), Vince Williams (6th).

The Patriots, from what I understand, get a lot of their talent through free agency. Thats what works for them. But a lot of their talent wasn't drafted. Knocking the Steelers in how they go about drafting is just as asinine as not liking Mike Tomlin.

Looking at the 247 sports composite it appears that every year their are about 30 5 star, 315 4 stars, and 1700 3 stars. I know that a lot of kids come out early but if we just look at the percentages of each star level for one year it looks like this:

5 star: 77.7% draft rate
4 star: 24.1% draft rate
3 star: 5.3% draft rate

Conclusion: Stars matter as if we already didnt know. Also 247 has way too many 3 stars. A better way to break it down would be by grade out of 100 like 247 uses instead of stars.

http://www.sbnation.com/2017/5/2/15520234/keevan-lucas-nfl-draft-bills-jets-tryout

Keevan Lucas, a wide receiver out of Tulsa, had a rather stressful experience in NFL draft this past weekend. Lucas went undrafted and not only did he haveto wait all seven rounds just to be passed on entirely, but he then had to essentially be teased by a pair of teams.

Lucas threw a party with nearly 300 people gathered to hear his name called in the draft. After he wasn’t drafted, he received a call from the Bills saying they wanted to sign him. He announced it in front of his friends and tweeted about it, only to have the Bills call back to withdraw the offer because of medical concerns

Undrafted Free Agents who declared early - Part 1

Undrafted Free Agents who declared early - Part 1

Numerous sports news report on those players who declare early for the draft (95-98 depending on the article) and follow-up with those players not drafted (28-30 depending) with the conclusion that a vast majority would have benefited from staying in school to develop their talents for next year. However, beyond the stats, there are many reasons that push players to declare early beyond the expectations that they will be drafted - family considerations, fulfilling a dream that amounts to a slim hope, problems at their school, academics, dismissals, running out of options, and even changes in their expected effectiveness (new coach with a different scheme, new unproven quarterback, and even coaches encouraging them to transfer). How many would have really benefited from another year in college to improve their draft stock and made a bad move in declaring early?

I'll use the figures of 30 undrafted early entrants out of a total of 98 who declared. My ranking source is The Sports Exchange with various sources confirming the names of the thirty.

Of those thirty,
- eight were non-FBS, four were G5, and eighteen were from Power 5 schools.
- of the eight non-FBS, none signed a free agent contract though two received tryout invitations. None were ranked higher than 61st at their positions. Many were unranked at their positions. Non-FBS players who declare early have slim chances of seeing the field at NFL camps. These are dreamers.
- over half the undrafted early entrant players (17 of 30) were at skilled positions, including WRs (11), RBs (5), QB (1), FS (1). WR and RB were the top 2 positions of players that were early entrants.
- the four G5 players all signed free agent contracts. All are WRs.

Keevan Lucas, WR, Tulsa, was ranked 45th of 438 draftable WRs. His stats were 81 receptions for 1180 yds, averaging 14.6 yds per reception. Tulsa's QB is returning for his fourth year as starter. He could have stayed in school, barring other influences, to improve his chances. Lucas has had injuries and will tryout for the Bills.
Jerome Lane, WR, Akron, was ranked 68th of 438 WRs. Lane was the leading receiver at Akron with 62 receptions for 1018 yds averageing 16.4 yds per catch.
Michael Clark, WR, Marshall, was ranked 94th of 438 WRs, was a basketball player with one year of football. Clark was first in receptions at Marshall with 37 receptions for 632yds and 17.1 yds/catch.
Deon-Tay McManus, WR, Marshall, was ranked 103nd of 438 WRs and was third in receptions (40) on Marshall's team.

All four will get their chances to display their talents for NFL teams on free agent contracts, but only one of the twelve non-P5 schools players (non-FBS and G5) may have improved his draft status for the 2018 draft and made a bad move in declaring early.

Part 2 will cover the eighteen Power 5 conference players who went undrafted.

Undrafted free agents early entrants - Part 2

Undrafted free agents early entrants - Part 2

Continuing the analysis of the thirty undrafted early entrants to the NFL draft, here's those players from the Power Five conferences. Ninety-eight players made early declarations.

How many should not have declared early and would have improved their draft status by going back to school for another year?

Of the eighteen undrafted early entrants from P5 schools, five really had no alternative in returning to their school's programs due to dismissals or a history of character problems that made returning problematic.

Jermaine Grace, LB, was dismissed from Miami prior to the '16 season due to improper benefits.
Tim Kimbrough, LB, said he left Georgia when his coach told him he was verging on being kicked out if he did not transfer. He left school but never transferred anywhere instead choosing to enter the draft.
Speedy Noil, WR, was arrested a second time in December and suspended from the football team.
Damore'ea Stringfellow, WR, had a conviction for assault leading to his dismissal from Washington and another incident in a bar at a bar in Oxford.
Ishmael Zamora, WR, A number of fans at Baylor wanted him dismissed prior to last season after a video of him beating a dog surfaced.

These five can reasonably be disregarded as players who could have stayed another year.

Two other players were not starters, but declared early.
Tarean Folston, RB - we know the background and his projected status for 2017
Joe Yearby, RB - was the third string RB at Miami when he declared. Mark Walton was not going to be displaced as their feature back, but Gus Edwards transferred and Yearby could have moved up to #2. Would it have benefited his draft status in '18? Doubtful.

Two other players, WRs, may arguably not have benefited from returning due to personnel, scheme, coaching changes.
KD Cannon, WR, was faced with a new coach, new offensive scheme, and a freshman QB as starter. Like other Baylor WRs he may looked at like a product of their scheme. Returning could have lowered his draft status due to an inexperienced QB, but Baylor will run a pro-style offense giving him experience in that.
Artavis Scott, WR, also faced with a new QB, Kelly Bryant, who replaces Deshaun Watson. Bryant has completed thirteen passes for a total of seventy-five yards in two seasons.

That leaves nine players who declared early, went undrafted and would have benefited from another year in school.

Jerod Evans, QB, Va Tech - 12 of 138 QBs. Proj 7th to FA
Damian Mama, OG, USC - 12 of 181 OGs. Proj 5th-7th rds
Marcus Oliver, LB, Indiana - 22 of 170 ILBs. Proj undrafted
Devine Redding, RB, Indiana - Projection - 40 of 189 RBs. Proj undrafted
Travis Rudolph, WR, Florida State - 30th of 438 WRs. Proj 6-7th rds.
Ricky Seals-Jones, WR/TE, Texas A&M - 19th of 105 TEs. Proj 7th to FA
Garrett Sickels, DE, Penn State - 22nd of 192 DEs. Proj 7th to FA
Charles Walker, DT, Oklahoma - 22 of 197 DTs. Proj 6-7 rd
Stanley "Boom" Williams, RB, Kentucky - 35 of 189 RBs. Proj late rd to undrafted

Redding is the only one among them who was not offered a free agent contract and he did not even get a tryout. When Evans declared, two teammates entered the draft early too. Bucky Hodges, TE (6th (201)), and Isaiah Ford, WR (Rd 7 (237) were drafted.

Adding those nine to the one non-P5 player, Keevan Lucas, who could have benefited from another year gives a total of ten out of 98 early entrants (10.2%) who should have stayed in school. (See post 1218 for Part 1 for the twelve non-Power 5 prospects.)

Bottom line with the majority of these kids is immaturity and the lack of common sense to see what their real chances are to make it in the NFL.

Are they counting kids who have been in school for four years but could have come back for a 5th?

No, the ninety-eight early entrants among whom are those undrafted listed in posts above are all true juniors or players with special exemptions.

New Orleans Saints 2017 Offseason moves, Draft

New Orleans Saints 2017 Offseason moves, Draft

In 2016, the Saints finished third in their division with a 7-9 record due to a porous defense that gave up 28.4 points per game (2nd worse). Their offense scored 29.3 pts per game (2nd best).

New Orleans’ three biggest area of needs heading into the off-season -- the secondary, the pass rush, and depth at linebacker.

Free Agency
The Saints first addressed linebacker in free agency, signing Manti Te'o (starter MLB) and A.J. Klein (starter SLB, until injured in Dec). Te'o signed for 2 yrs for $5 million. Klein signed for 3 yrs for $15 million.
Chase Daniel, QB was signed to fill the QB backup position.
Larry Warford, OG was signed and became their Starter at RG.
Ted Ginn, WR was signed in a 3 yr deal worth $11 million ($3 million guaranteed) - Starter, RWR.
Adrian Peterson, RB, was signed to team with Mark Ingram at RB. Peterson was traded to Arizona in Oct, 2017 for a sixth round draft pick in 2018.

Players Released
New Orleans released Jairius Byrd, S, due to poor production (benched in fourth game of 2016) saving them $7.8 million in cap space. (The money saved by releasing Byrd paid for the 2017 salaries of Te'o and Klein.)

Also released were - Tim Lelito - their 4th guard, before Larry Warford was signed;
DL John Jenks - released during the 2016 season
RB Tim Hightower - released after Peterson signing and Kamara drafted.

NFL Draft, 2017
Prior to the draft, the Saints traded Brandon Cooks, WR to New England for their first round pick (#32) and also received the 103rd pick in the 2017 draft.

In the draft the Saints chose:
1-11 -- CB Marshon Lattimore - Starter RCB - may be Rookie of the Year (AP's), Pro-Bowl selection

1-32 -- OT Ryan Ramczyk (pick from NE in Cooks trade) - Starting LOT

2-10 (42nd) - S Marcus Williams - Starting FS

3-3 (67th) RB Alvin Kamara - 2nd string (trade up with the 49ers for the Saints No. 229 pick and a 2018 2nd-round pick) - named Pepsi Rookie of the Year, Pro Bowl selection.

3-12 (76th) LB Alex Anzalone - Starter first four games, Then Injured and put on IR.

3-39 (103rd, Comp pick from NE in Cooks trade) DE Trey Hendrickson (R3) - 2nd string LDE

6-12 (No. 196) Al-Quadin Muhammad, LB/DE - 2nd String RDE

Marshon Lattimore, Ryan Ramczyk, Marcus Williams and Alvin Kamara - the Saints' first four picks - have been named to the Football Writers' All-Rookie team. Two of those picks were obtained by trades, as well as their fifth.

In summary, New Orleans offseason moves netted them eight starters including a shutdown CB and a LOT, 3 LBs and 2 DBs with a significant contribution by Alvin Kamara, and two second string DEs. Kamara finished as the Saints' second leading receiver in addition to averaging 6.1 yard per play rushing. The 2017 Saints defense gave up 20.4 pts per game, almost nine points lower, and tenth best in the NFL. They finished 11-5 and came with a last play missed tackle from the NFC Championship.

Re-Grading the NFL Draft, 2017

Among this analyst's big misses were:
Jabill Peppers, S, #25, Cleveland, originally graded a B+, with a one year grade of D.
Ryan Ramczyk, OT, #32, New Orleans, orginally graded a D, with a one year grade of A.

Ahead of the Chiefs-Browns game this weekend.
Baker Mayfield says ‘talent-wise’ Patrick Mahomes should’ve been the No. 1 pick in ‘17, the Myles Garrett year

Andy Reid feels the Browns now have their franchise QB and DE. John Dorsey, who became Cleveland's GM before last year's draft, was KC's GM and also drafted Kareem Hunt in 2017.

As for the other eight teams' picks before the Chiefs took Mahomes with notes on their QBs as well as the Bills who traded the pick to KC:

- The Bears are still developing the talented, but wildly inconsistent Mitchell Trubisky.
- The 49ers drafted Solomon Thomas and later traded for Jimmy Garoppolo, who they gave $27.5 million per year.
- The Jaguars drafted Leonard Fournette and stuck with Blake Bortles.
- The Titans drafted Corey Davis to be Marcus Mariota's top receiver, but Mariota hasn't played well since 2016.
- The Jets drafted Jamal Adams before taking a quarterback, Sam Darnold, in this year's draft.
- The Chargers drafted Mike Williams, who has been an inconsistent deep threat for Philip Rivers.
- The Panthers drafted Christian McCaffrey, who has been a focal point of their offense alongside Cam Newton.
- The Bengals drafted John Ross, who has barely seen the field, and stuck with Andy Dalton.
- The Bills traded the 10th pick to the Chiefs, who took Mahomes. The Bills drafted Josh Allen a year later. They currently have a historically bad offense.

QB trade in 2017 draft

QB trade in 2017 draft

Kansas City - Buffalo. NFL teams always overpay to get into the position that will net them a QB in the first ten picks.

KC wanted Patrick Mahomes, trading up seventeen spots with Buffalo (at 10) to get him. The trade chart valued #10 at 1300 points.

In 2017, Buffalo got KC's first rounder at #27 (680 pts) and a third rounder 3(91) - 136 points
and KC's first rounder in 2018 (initially estimated at 1000 points). KC got their future franchise QB (1300 pts) and paid 1816 points for him. Two first rounders and a third rounder was pretty steep.

But, in the end, KC's 2018 first rounder at 1(22) was valued at 780 points. That's still 1596 points. When KC traded Alex Smith to Washington, in addition to getting Kendall Fuller as a CB starter, they also got a third rounder 3(78) valued at 200 points. Subtract that and the total point compensation that KC paid for Mahomes at 1300 points was 1396 points.

Who did Buffalo draft in 2017 with KC's 1st and 3rd rounders? Their needs were WR, QB, CB, LB, TE (NFL.com). At 1(27), the Bills got Tre'Davious White, CB, who started right away and was selected to the NFL's All-Rookie team. KC's third rounder 3(91) was part of a package by the Bills to move up to 2(27), selecting Zay Jones, WR, who is also a starter. Two late round picks by the Bills were Mike Milano, who has been a starter at WLB, and Nathan Peterman, QB, who may be pushed into starting this weekend. Allen's QB rating is 61.8, forty-seventh out of fifty-three QBs. Peterman's is fifty-second at 20.8.

The Bills used KC's first round pick in 2018 1(22) as part of a package with a second rounder to move up to 1(16) to select Tremaine Edmunds, LB who has been their starting MLB from day 1.

The Bills, of course, traded up this past spring to draft Josh Allen as their franchise QB. The trade with KC gave them the draft capital of two first rounders and enough reserve to only having to trade one of those to move up for Allen. Allen has been out and the offense is pretty anemic. While it may be tempting to think they could have had Mahomes, a return of three productive starters in Tre'Davious White, Zay Jones, and Tremaine Edmunds is pretty sweet.

Win-Win
