Just to be clear, I wasn't discussing whether or not McGovern would be the starter. I was saying that its flawed logic to think that a HC would not play the best player because he might get hurt. DM said that if McGovern didn't get the start it was because they were worried about him getting injured, and that makes very little sense. Its football and we get injured all the time. You play the best player. If Hoge wins the battle, its because he's the better player. If not, its because McGovern is.
To add, do we really think that Zaire might not start because the staff is concerned he might get hurt again? Or why would they recruit and play Adams so much after a torn ACL? Heck, our top 2 RB's have both had major knee injuries. They aren't giving the starting spot to Dexter Williams because those guys might get hurt again.
This is the heart of the argument. I can understand that I may be wrong: McGovern's history of injuries may have nothing to do with who starts. But I can't understand why Lucky insists the logic is flawed.
There is an important difference between a guy potentially getting hurt on any play (Floyd), and a guy having a 4-year history of injuries that has kept him from practicing and playing on a consistent basis (Ragone). In popular parlance, its the difference between someone having some "bad luck," and someone being "injury prone."
Football teams, and especially offensive line, spend a lot of time trying to get players comfortable playing together and to establish a rhythm. If that rhythm is repeatedly disrupted by a certain player for whatever reason (discipline, mistakes, here injuries...), you take that into account. You need guys who are reliable, whether its their fault or not.
Why this would not factor into a tight position battle, especially where the older guy has very little eligibility left, and the younger guy arguably has a higher upside is beyond me.
I am not sure that Zaire has shown himself to be injury prone. Two guys that are creeping in that direction are Smythe and Tranquil. I bet they think about that when they are looking at Smythe and Weishar. And I am sure that the coaches are trying to figure out plan B for tranquil (though there may not be one). If there was someone that was right up there with Drew, I bet they'd have a tough decision to make.
