Today was faculty/staff appreciation day (they get to watch the practice--I got in as a spouse). So here's some of my observations:

WRs like Kelly said: there's flashes, but little consistency
Torii Hunter is solid and consistent, but the others aren't.
Miles Boykin had an awesome jump ball grap. High-pointed the ball with a defender draped all over him.

Didn't realize McIntosh is a WR now.

Jarron Jones with an 80 yard fumble recovery for touchdown! (though if the other guys actually tried chasing him, probably would only have been a five yard return.)

Corey Robinson an encouraging and energizing presence.

Kelly infuriated with one of the receivers (think it was Stepherson?). Really blew up on him calling him a "lazy bum-bum" (not verbatim) who was acting all entitled.

Durham Smythe, Buster Sheridan, Corey Holmes stick out as people who just drop balls without catching any.

RBs make weird grunting noises in their drills.

James Brent not suited up

Jimmy Brent...

I love Kelly blowing up on kids acting entitled. Get out there and do the little things and earn what you get.

Just to be clear, I wasn't discussing whether or not McGovern would be the starter. I was saying that its flawed logic to think that a HC would not play the best player because he might get hurt. DM said that if McGovern didn't get the start it was because they were worried about him getting injured, and that makes very little sense. Its football and we get injured all the time. You play the best player. If Hoge wins the battle, its because he's the better player. If not, its because McGovern is.

To add, do we really think that Zaire might not start because the staff is concerned he might get hurt again? Or why would they recruit and play Adams so much after a torn ACL? Heck, our top 2 RB's have both had major knee injuries. They aren't giving the starting spot to Dexter Williams because those guys might get hurt again.

i was just throwing a lil jab at you guys in fun...i just remember skimming over the thread and seeing you guys going ...it was all in fun

Based on a few of the post-practice tweets I've read, it sounds like Bilal, McGovern and St. Brown all had good days. Those are the three positions I feel least confident about heading into the season. If those three can play consistent, quality football I'll feel much better about our prospects this season.

This is the heart of the argument. I can understand that I may be wrong: McGovern's history of injuries may have nothing to do with who starts. But I can't understand why Lucky insists the logic is flawed.

There is an important difference between a guy potentially getting hurt on any play (Floyd), and a guy having a 4-year history of injuries that has kept him from practicing and playing on a consistent basis (Ragone). In popular parlance, its the difference between someone having some "bad luck," and someone being "injury prone."

Football teams, and especially offensive line, spend a lot of time trying to get players comfortable playing together and to establish a rhythm. If that rhythm is repeatedly disrupted by a certain player for whatever reason (discipline, mistakes, here injuries...), you take that into account. You need guys who are reliable, whether its their fault or not.

Why this would not factor into a tight position battle, especially where the older guy has very little eligibility left, and the younger guy arguably has a higher upside is beyond me.

I am not sure that Zaire has shown himself to be injury prone. Two guys that are creeping in that direction are Smythe and Tranquil. I bet they think about that when they are looking at Smythe and Weishar. And I am sure that the coaches are trying to figure out plan B for tranquil (though there may not be one). If there was someone that was right up there with Drew, I bet they'd have a tough decision to make.

Also from practice, they had these pretty cool robots (practice dummies that can move pretty fast). They were used in 7-on-7s to pressure the quarterback and block passing lanes. Never seen 'em before. DeShone had a hand-fight with one.

Good to see Avery had a good day after someone, I think PANDA, said he wasn't having a good camp yesterday. Not critizing, it's just a little relief.

I think he's going to take over Adams as the lead back of that class and never look back. Both will split but I think in a year from now we'll know who the 1A is.

This is why its flawed. Then you wouldn't give the guy reps and he'd probably be medically RS. If you had enough evidence or thought strongly enough that this were the case, you wouldn't waste the time giving him partial first team reps and taking time away from other players, unless you thought he could handle the job.

Precisely why Tranquill is handling all or almost all starting SS reps. Because he's hands down the best guy for the job. They might be concerned whether he can stay healthy, but that doesn't factor into who is going to start. You start the best player period. If you feel the need to get another player ready, great, I agree with that. But that should have no bearing on who starts, which is what we discussed. Unless that player is currently not healthy, which isn't the case. Tranquill is a perfect example of that. If McGovern was the best guy for the job, he'll start. If he's not then he won't. If they thought health was an issue, he wouldn't be a part of the conversation.

I like this post/thought. Adams is great and has that home run threat. I think Dex is a bigger Folston and will play that roll going forward. Dex looked GREAT in the spring game and even better in fall camp. LOVE OUR RB SITUATION.

Both QB's... it will be interesting to see if they both handle it well.

Not sure I like it, though.

I'm hoping it means Kizer plays until inside the 10, at which time Malik is in.

Both QBs if fine for 1 week if you're still not sold, but if it continues beyond that, that's awful IMO. Sure, they're two of your best 5 players... But when you rotate them, you're it's not like you're getting 2 on the field at the same time anyway, and it prevents the ONE from really getting into rhythm/experience. Hate it if it goes beyond week 1.

The only thing he really said about it was that it's not going to be one QB in Qs 1&3 and one in Qs 2&4. For all we know, it could play out similar to how you described. He framed it up as using both to win the game, after all.

Cited starting LB's as Onwualu, Morgan and Martini.

Coney mentioned as 4th behind Martini. I wonder if that means Bilal behind Onwualu?

Not sure if I totally believe it. Could just be BK playing mind games with Texas, forcing them to game plan for 2 guys.

I hope your wrong. don't screw with the timing. I'd rather they split time via series.

I don't like it. Seems like it's just a way to keep one guy from getting angry.

I also think Kizer has massive upside and this will just delay his growth.

Yep. I'm trying to reserve my anger until after Texas to see if he picks an outright starter. I despise the two QB system and it ensures neither can reach their full potential IMO.

The only reason I'd be OK with the Texas game is if hes still trying to determine who's best and will start the rest of the year. But his comments sound more like 'both are good so both will play', rather than 'welre still trying to figure out who should be our guy.
