You don't want the team finding out such big news the day of. Distracts from the focus. If there's any 'aftermath' from who's named/not named, you flush that out before you enter Texas stadium IMO. Not to mention, that starter should be taking the majority of the reps for the Texas game plan leading up.

The team would know, but ideally it would stay under wraps to the public.

I don't know if that's viable in this age of "sources," though.

Dare I say it... I agree with Koon here...

Edit* Although.... GK did say "publicly announce", so he wasn't referencing when the team found out.

The team will know who the starter will be before the public does. I don't think the team and public will be finding out simultaneously.

If the team knows, we will know. At least to me - if it's obvious in practice that's going to get leaked, or at least well hinted at.

Well the last open media practice is the 22nd so we might not know. If we find out on gameday, I bet the team team was told about a week and a half before us.

If the team finds out ~ August 22nd, we'll be 99% sure ~ August 24th is what I'm saying. We won't be finding out on gameday if the team actually knows ahead of time. You can't hide who's taking all of the Texas-package snaps. There are too many eyes on practice.

The key here is "publicly announce". There is no way the team doesn't find out until game day. They will know no later then a week before the game. That gives the starter a chance to take all the reps and fine tune his timing with the receivers and backs.

They hid it pretty well back in 2011 between Crist/Rees, didn't they? Not sure if I misremember how that went.

They can do it if they want, is my point. There is plenty of big info that gets kept under wraps until the moment it's released. It's usually a two-week cycle from what I've seen. Anything more than two weeks and you're playing with fire, but under that should stay pretty quiet.

Assuming a player doesn't make the dumbass decision of tweeting about it, how would we know? I don't think people like Loy, Sampson, etc would have a source to tell them something like that if BK wants it under wraps.

I don't think we'll find out before the 22nd because there really isn't reason to announce that early and it would let Texas key in on who prepare against.

I think Kelly will tell the team the week before, and we won't hear anything until game day but we will hear a ton of people and their "Sources" speculate

Didn't Urban do this last year? Nobody knew until game day? Including the QB's?

I thought that was dumb. I hope the decision is made at least a week in advance. I don't care if it's made public or not though.

Seems to me the starters for wr are going to be Hunter, Sanders, and St. Brown. They've pretty much been running with the first team in every practice viewed by the media.

Just to be clear, I wasn't discussing whether or not McGovern would be the starter. I was saying that its flawed logic to think that a HC would not play the best player because he might get hurt. DM said that if McGovern didn't get the start it was because they were worried about him getting injured, and that makes very little sense. Its football and we get injured all the time. You play the best player. If Hoge wins the battle, its because he's the better player. If not, its because McGovern is.

To add, do we really think that Zaire might not start because the staff is concerned he might get hurt again? Or why would they recruit and play Adams so much after a torn ACL? Heck, our top 2 RB's have both had major knee injuries. They aren't giving the starting spot to Dexter Williams because those guys might get hurt again.

Today was faculty/staff appreciation day (they get to watch the practice--I got in as a spouse). So here's some of my observations:

WRs like Kelly said: there's flashes, but little consistency
Torii Hunter is solid and consistent, but the others aren't.
Miles Boykin had an awesome jump ball grap. High-pointed the ball with a defender draped all over him.

Didn't realize McIntosh is a WR now.

Jarron Jones with an 80 yard fumble recovery for touchdown! (though if the other guys actually tried chasing him, probably would only have been a five yard return.)

Corey Robinson an encouraging and energizing presence.

Kelly infuriated with one of the receivers (think it was Stepherson?). Really blew up on him calling him a "lazy bum-bum" (not verbatim) who was acting all entitled.

Durham Smythe, Buster Sheridan, Corey Holmes stick out as people who just drop balls without catching any.

RBs make weird grunting noises in their drills.

Hope that's not true. We may need to rely on 12 personnel, especially early in the season, if our WRs aren't reliable, but that ain't gonna work if the TEs can't catch either.
