From ESPN NOW:

Notre Dame QB Malik Zaire: "If my decisions were based off of Coach Kelly's decisions and if they were motivating me or not, I probably would have gone crazy by now. So, I've always just focused on being a pro. Being a pro is the most important thing for me in chasing what I want to chase."

Are we sure this is a ND type of guy?

After completely wasting his brother red shirt year - he better be a big contributor if they do that.

Gilmore wasn't on the staff when Tuitt's suspension forced Kelly to burn Romeo's redshirt. IIRC, Diaco was the DC and Elston was the DL coach.

yeah but when a 17 year old kid says he wants to be a pro everyone think he isnt a fit....

People are dumb. Plenty with an NFL mentality make it through ND. Nyles Morgan, Jarron Jones, Jay Hayes, K. Russel, Malik, Clausen, Floyd, etc.

Yes he is an ND guy. I'm certain he meant being a pro as in he want to prepare, lead and play like he's a professional. Nothing to do with the NFL.

I actually thought the same thing but either interpretation is fine by me. We have two games at the QB position, let's see who shows up when the bright lights turn on.

Wasn't it Kona Schwenke's RS, they were trying to RS him as a sophomore.. Romeo started all games on ST's.

I think the "ND guy" stuff was referring to calling Coach Kelly out in public for making a bunch of decisions that don't make sense, not implying anything about the NFL.

That's true! My mistake. Just didn't want to people to fault Gilmore for that.

Schwenke was another guy who could have really benefited from a 5Y; and was sorely missed after he left.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">One personnel note from today, defensive line coach Keith Gilmore said Julian Okwara expected to play this year. Thought he might be a RS.</p>— Irish Illustrated (@PeteSampson_) <a href="https://twitter.com/PeteSampson_/status/766020391240433664">August 17, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Fairly surprised by this as last weeks practices that were watched by 247 and rivals, said that Okwara wasn't even a part of any team activities. Meaning, he's so far down the depth chart that he doesn't take 1st, 2nd, or even share 3rd team reps. He was only active when they broke out into position drills.

He would've played a major role in stemming the losses in 2014. Especially the NW game, we were awful stopping the run that game all we needed was one stop somewhere along the way. He was really coming into his own towards the end of his career as a run defender.

You could make a similar argument for the UL game. Win even one of those and the season looks a lot different.

Might not mean much a few weeks from now. Crist got one half before he went to the bench for the season. Neither is that bad, but I can guarantee BK won't do anything stupid. If it's not working, he won't play both unless it's something like Zaire in the red zone.

My guess based on both QBs is that Kizer looks more polished and is better in passing drills while Zaire keeps doing better once they get to 11 on 11.

Aren't there rumors out there that Zaire is more popular with the team.....he might be doing this for camaraderie for now. It will go over somewhat better in the locker room if he goes with Kizer due to game performance and not because of a very tight camp race.

Pretty sure that's just a narrative being pushed by Koon.

Can't wait for both to look great against Texas in front of the entire world, then BK has a real mess on his hands. I'd be happier if one looked great and we never got to see the other one. I just think this is going to be a disaster.

I wouldn't say never got to see the other one. But if we don't have a clear cut starter, we're not in a good place.

Could he have meant 'professional' as in acting professional about the situation as opposed to 'pro' as in the NFL.

I trust BK to use a 2-QB system in an effective way. If it's not as a one-game tryout, it will be an effective by-situation basis. I don't see him botching things like Urban did at OSU.

However, I personally am bummed that it's not Kizer and Kizer alone. If BK were to start Kizer, it would be the first time that he's had LEGITIMATE continuity at the QB position during his time at ND. Every year, for one reason or another, continuity at QB has been interrupted. By not going with Kizer, you are almost throwing an artificial wrench into an important part of developing the position.

I thought you were team black Tebow?

We can't have these two guys looking over their shoulder all season long...that will suck.

I'm team #EitherGuyIsGreatButPreferrablyNotBoth

With WR and TE in Flux and needing some time to get settled, you've gotta take continuity where you can get it... bonus points if its at the most important position on the team, where the QB can be your one constant amidst a bunch of change.

I think Malik would be just fine, but I think Kizer's extended game experience would help to get us through any potential rough patches with other guys early on, and would result in what is ultimately a higher upside later in the year.

Can't we drop the black Tebow BS? Malik has way better throwing mechanics than Tebow.

Truuuuue.

Koon is in love with Malik as the emotional leader, which is a legit reason to support him. However, I think that's putting too much weight into the potential of a single quality.

Malik might push people and make them better, but we haven't seen him face true adversity. We've seen him in action against a tough opponent, but that's not the same thing as the adversity that Kizer's got experience with.

Leadership gets you through adversity. We THINK Malik is an emotional leader. But we KNOW Kizer can get us through adversity.

So much hand wringing here over the possibility of a 2 QB system. I trust Sanford to make the right decision here, and he's already said 2 QBs are a non-issue. It's not going to spell doom if both guys are used. People always associate 2 QB issues as a negative because it means "You don't have a capable QB." We've got two very good guys, each with strong skills. This doesn't occur often because most teams don't find themselves in a position with a wealth of talent and experience (upperclassmen familiar with the system) at the position. If Kelly says both will play, I say reserve the judgements till we see the game.

While I agree. We could only hope that Malik becomes as efficient as Tebow was while at Florida. It might not have looked good but he was crazy efficient.

Finally get an offense that is really effective and Kelly goes and does this. I personally think this will make our offense worse and is a very bad decision. JMO

I'm okay with that. Lets just not call him....black Tebow. That just looks bad.

When has Kelly ever had an ideal situation at QB here at ND? Hell, he had issues with it at Cincinnati too. Between injuries every other year, suspensions, and players failing to live up to potential we always seem to be shifting guys around or getting multiple guys involved. Using two outstanding QBs and getting them both ready may be the best move he's done. If history has shown us anything, we'll be ready should one struggle in a game or one gets injured.

True story. When I was in the student section last year watching Kizer throw a couple at the feet of the receivers in mop up duty, I was like "if Zaire gets hurt this year then we are in trouble". Glad I was wrong :)
