Former Penn State quarterback commitment Brandon Wimbush flipped to Notre Dame following a surprise official visit to South Bend. Wimbush said he was solid to Penn State following numerous Stanford rumors for a couple of months, but when he took that official to Notre Dame, all bets were off.
This is a clear flexing of the recruiting muscles at Notre Dame. ND offered Wimbush after falling hard for him after evaluating senior film and then just went and plucked him from uber-recruiter James Franklin and the Nittany Lions. Wimbush has tremendous upside and will certainly help lure skill position prospects, especially wide receivers, to Notre Dame.
He could also make South Bend more interesting for his five-star teammate, cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick, who is committed to Alabama but took an official visit to Florida State this past weekend. There was talk of Fitzpatrick heading to Notre Dame with Wimbush at the last moment, but cancelling his scheduled trip to FSU wasn't in the cards. Keep an eye on this one as Fitzpatrick visited Penn State when Wimbush was committed to the Nits.
And when it comes to the all-important quarterback position, the Irish could be setting themselves up nicely for next year as well. Class of 2016 five-star quarterback Malik Henry, who does not plan to drag out his recruiting process, has supposedly had a couple of favorites along the way, and now that honor goes to Notre Dame. He has developed a strong bond with Irish QB coach Matt LaFleur, which has helped push Notre Dame to the front. Also under consideration right now are Florida State, UCLA, USC and Ohio State, with the Seminoles and Bruins next in line. Henry will actually visit Tallahassee this fall, but it will be for the Notre Dame game, so you can be sure that he will be keeping a very close eye on both teams.
With UCLA, while some believe it is still in serious contention, it is hard to believe he will want to follow Josh Rosen, who will likely take over the starting job as a true freshman. Ohio State has quickly fallen and is unlikely to receive a visit before he makes a decision and while USC is close and has received visits, they are not keeping up with Notre Dame and Florida State. It is not clear how the Wimbush commitment affects Henry, but he has been high on Notre Dame for quite some time and that appears unlikely to change.
In addition to Wimbush, Notre Dame hosted a number of top targets for the Stanford game, including four-stars Equanimeous St. Brown and Frank Buncom IV from California, so I expect the Irish to continue to have success in Cali despite being burned a few times out west. Both recruits were already seriously considering the Irish before their visits, but now both have them at or near the top.
Buncom is likely down to the Irish and Stanford, with a visit to Palo Alto scheduled in January. However, will the Irish wait that long for him or will they try to push the issue? For St. Brown, he still has official visits planned to USC, UCLA and possibly Stanford, even though he has already been to Palo Alto on multiple occasions and may not return for an official. Originally, sources believed St. Brown would want to stay closer to home, but recently it seems like he is more open to exploring other parts of the country.
Notre Dame's quick start this season has definitely intrigued recruits from coast-to-coast, who will be keeping a close eye on how the Irish finish this season off. Despite a few bumps along the road with Deontay Greenberry, Tee Shepard, and Eddie Vanderdoes, California is a huge piece of the Notre Dame national recruiting plan.
There are so many top recruits interested in Notre Dame -- Iman Marshall, Soso Jamabo, Porter Gustin, Tevon Coney, Cameron Scarlett, Ykili Ross, Cordell Broadus and others -- that a strong finish on the field will clearly lead to a big finish in recruiting.
