Counting my ‘bet against ND’ winnings

It's more fun to be optimistic. Having negative opinions doesn't really help us enjoy the team, since we can't do anything to fix it. It's more fun to speculate about what's out there for us, than speculate how many points we'll give up and how badly we'll lose. If I wanted negative opinions, I'd go to NDNation. I come here because I'd rather err on the side of having smoke blown up my ass. So yeah, you can pout in a corner about how much our coach sucks or whatever, but I'd rather talk about the fact that we have a realistic chance of beating SC. Don't act like this team lacks talent or has never surprised anyone. If we lose, that's all the negativity I want from this, and you can rub your "I told you so" all over this board. I won't be reading it, I'll be speculating about what our bowl opportunities are. It's just more fun that way.

So, I guess you disagree with my, "fetal positions are so liberating' philosophy...

I haven't made one "I told you so" post ever so thanks for playing. All I've done is raise issues with the coaching and suggest that we should considering finding a new coach IF we lose 4 games again this year. Nothing to I told you so about.

You confuse negativity with objectivity.

If you want me to conform to what you want out of this message board you're out of luck. There's an ignore feature.

Ok, let me know when our vote makes a lick of difference in the decision to retain Brian Kelly. Otherwise it's just negativity about something we can't possibly influence.

I also didn't say you had made such a post, just that if we get blown out, you'd have every opportunity to talk about how right you were and it still wouldn't matter. "Realism" (the calling card of the pessimist) is completely useless unless something can be done about it. Otherwise you're just killing hope, like an adult going around telling children there's no Santa Claus.

We are in the wrong thread so this will be my last comment but I really don't understand the "you have no influence over the football team so your opinion is meaningless" argument. What the hell are we doing here? That's like saying you shouldn't debate politics because your vote doesn't really matter.

There's a huge difference between being critical of a coach and being negative towards the program. I'm actually quite positive about most things. Hell I predicted a 2 touchdown victory against Clemson. But if I think we are going to lose, I'm going to say I think we will lose. Not going to keep quiet because it bothers people like you.

If I predicted a loss in every game of the Weis era I'm pretty sure I'd be batting over .500.

The objective is to enjoy the team. You shitting on it doesn't promote that objective. And in politics, your vote matters at least a little bit. Here it matters zero. So let's sit here and talk about how BK will never get the job done. He'll never win more than 8 games again. He will be retained by the delusional until we are utterly irrelevant, only seeing the polls as often as our past and faded glory permits. This dramatically improves our Notre Dame experience because we know to expect never to beat USC again until Kelly retires, but by then there will be no hope anyway.

Let's be realistic. ND won't win out. But I'll be ecstatic to go 10-2 and go to a New Years six bowl and get a win.

I'll bet you all of your vBucks you're wrong.

I would bet a lot of money, because I'm sure someone would give me really good odds... Irish win Out.

That's what I like to hear! Positive thoughts bring positive euphoric highs, and unfortunately an occasional soul crushing low. As bad as that loss felt, it's part of why I love college football. Go Irish.!

OK, I will accept your bet... and go waaay out on a limb and bet everything that I currently have in my bank profile here on Irish Envy. Then, I'm going to the nearest casino and continue to play penny slot machines. I'm a big spender.

I'm bullish on ND during the week and bearish on them during the games. It's just how I am. During the week I'm optimistic and then in the game threads I'm negative. I try not to be but being a Vikings, Braves, and ND fan has made me a chicken little during games.

I am having a hard time seeing us jump any of these champs. FSU or Clemson most likely take the ACC with one loss somewhere along the way, having lost to Clemson I don't see us jumping a one loss FSU or Clemson (plus I see us as an ACC proxy). SEC would need a three loss champion to even consider losing a spot. TCU/Baylor both need to lose two games to get snubbed, highly unlikely both drop two games. B1G - getting some love with Iowa and Northwestern moving up the polls, helps MSU/OSU SOS which tells me the B1G champ needs to have 2 losses for us to have a chance of unseating them.

Short of a couple conference title game upsets by three loss dogs I don't see us jumping two conferences. Clemson was key to cock-blocking the ACC now that Ga Tech looks like a pretender.

Yeah a lot of things have to happen for ND to make it in. You can argue that you think they WILL happen or will NOT happen but there's no denying that it's only partially in Irish hands.

The main thing is that the kids believe there's something to play for. As it turns out if ND had been able to even fathom that a OSU team with a loss to Va Tech win the Championship over a 1-loss Oregon team it probably would have been easier to keep their heads up after the wanktastic FSU loss

I would love to go 11-1 and miss the playoffs, because they still went 11-1. There's ALWAYS something to play for.

Only the seniors have been part of a team that posted double digit wins, and none of them played any significant time that year, so if they want to play a little violin because their title hopes seem dashed, that would be pretty cowardly.

*This team still has lots to play for.

The PAC looks like they are going to cannibalize themselves, and the champ will probably have 3 losses, they are out IMO.

CFP will be SEC, B1G, B12, and ACC champ. ND will be in the Fiesta Bowl against some crappy team that runs the table, like Memphis.

If Memphis beats Ole Miss, that might make Bama and the SEC look a tad worse, especially the way that FLA rolled Ole Miss last weekend in the Swamp. ND vs Memphis would be an interesting game, but if Memphis ran the table and were a 12-0 team, that team would not be a crap team. They would just be Baylor 2.0, basically.

That Memphis coach is gonna be a nice hire at a bigger program in the near future.

I want ND to win out more than anything - well, almost anything. But I just can't help but think they will trip up somewhere along the line. I will bet you your entire bankroll as of this moment (v$15,358,865,877.64) that ND does NOT win out during the regular season. Deal?

As others have said, 11-1 would be an absolutely fantastic season, whether we make the playoffs or not.

People talk about "having something to play for" as motivation for each game. Maybe I'm an ancient dinosaur, but I looked forward to the competition of every game. It was "Let's Go!!" The motivation was going against the opposition with people keeping score.

Honestly I'd feel good at 10-2. Not great, but good.
10 wins is the minimum with this kind of talent on the team.

Kizer has now demonstrated tremendous poise on multiple occasions, so he simply has too much talent around him to not win ten games this season.

Would be hard to not feel great about 10-2 and then a NYD bowl victory, no?

Exactly how I feel.

Not including the bowl, 11 wins is a great season and a successful one. 10 wins is a good season, one we shouldn't feel was unsuccessful, but one we could've done better in.

10 wins is the minimum for me in the regular season. I really want at least 11 total wins this year to feel like it was a good season.
