only surprises for me

CJ Sanders #1 PR
Cage over Tillery. I'm sure Tillery will see a lot of action nonetheless.

A little surprised Sebastian wasn't #2. Thinking we will still see plenty of him.

TE looks to be a group effort

Notre Dame releases depth chart for Texas

With a large core of returning players, Notre Dame’s depth chart was already a competitive situation. Heading into the season’s first game week, we get our first official look at how the two-deep is shaking out coming out of fall camp.

There are some surprises and some competitions still playing out. Let’s take a look at the competitive picture as Notre Dame heads into the season opener.

OFFENSE

WR
Chris Brown, Sr.
or Corey Robinson, Jr.

WR
Amir Carlisle, GS
or Torii Hunter Jr., Jr.*

LT
Ronnie Stanley, Sr.*
Hunter Bivin, Jr.*

LG
Quenton Nelson, Soph.*
Alex Bars, Soph.*

C
Nick Martin, GS
Sam Mustipher, Soph.*

RG
Steve Elmer, Jr.
Colin McGovern, Jr.*

RT
Mike McGlinchey, Jr.*
Mark Harrell, Sr.*

TE
Durham Smythe, Jr.*
Tyler Luatua, Soph.
or Nic Weishar, Soph.*
or Chase Hounshell, GS
or Alizé Jones, Fr.

WR
Will Fuller, Jr.
Equanimeous St. Brown, Fr.

QB
Malik Zaire, Jr.*
DeShone Kizer, Soph.*

RB
Tarean Folston, Jr.
C.J. Prosise, Sr.*

Thoughts: It shouldn’t be a surprise, but the tight end position looks like the “everybody’s gonna play” situation that we thought it could be, falling in line behind Durham Smythe. Also of note is the ascent of receivers Corey Robinson and Torii Hunter Jr. Both had the “or” in front of their names, essentially designating co-starter status. We assumed that both Chris Brown and Amir Carlisle earned starting duties. They likely did. But this makes it pretty clear that they’re going to be sharing reps, something we already assumed. Lastly, only freshmen Equanimeous St. Brown and Alizé Jones made the offensive two-deep, with Jones part of a four-man back-up group. St. Brown must be the real deal.

DEFENSE

DL
Romeo Okwara, Sr.
Andrew Trumbetti, Soph.

DL
Sheldon Day, Sr.
Jay Hayes, Soph.

DL
Daniel Cage, Soph.
Jerry Tillery, Fr.

DL
Isaac Rochell, Soph.
Jonathan Bonner, Soph.*

LB
Joe Schmidt, GS
Nyles Morgan, Soph.
or Jarrett Grace, GS

LB
Jaylon Smith, Jr.
Te’von Coney, Fr.

LB
James Onwualu, Jr.
Greer Martini, Soph.

CB
KeiVarae Russell, Sr.*
Devin Butler, Jr.

S
Max Redfield, Jr.
Matthias Farley, GS

S
Elijah Shumate, Sr.
Drue Tranquill, Soph.

CB
Cole Luke, Jr.
Nick Coleman, Fr.

Thoughts: Daniel Cage moved ahead of Jerry Tillery for the starting job, with Kelly crediting Cage’s work late in camp for the move. It’s also largely the product of Cage being a better fit for the nose guard spot (or shade technique, as BK called it Tuesday) than Tillery, who is also working as the primary rotation player for Sheldon Day’s three-technique. Everything else on the two deep looks about right, with freshman Nick Coleman backing up Cole Luke and Drue Tranquill serving as the backup to Elijah Shumate, a spot where Avery Sebastian looked close. Both backup safeties, Tranquill and Matthias Farley, will be situational players unless they’re needed to move into a primary role.

SPECIAL TEAMS

PK
Justin Yoon, Fr.
John Chereson, Jr.

P
Tyler Newsome, Soph.*
Jeff Riney, Fr.

LS
Scott Daly, Sr.*
Hunter Smith, Sr.*
or Nic Weishar, Soph.*

HOLDER
DeShone Kizer, Soph.*
Montgomery VanGorder, Soph.*

PR
C.J. Sanders, Fr.
Will Fuller, Jr.

KR
Amir Carlisle, GS
or C.J. Sanders, Fr.
or C.J. Prosise, Sr.*

*Denotes additional year of eligibility available.

Thoughts: Perhaps the only surprise here is C.J. Sanders taking No. 1 reps at punt returner over Will Fuller. Kelly reserved the right to swap this out, but I’m guessing Sanders was a more consistent punt catcher, and his lateral quickness is a nice perk, too. (Plus, Fuller is a key ingredient to the Irish offense.) Sanders and C.J. Prosise will backup Amir Carlisle at kickoff returner. If Sanders breaks one, expect him to move up this ladder quickly as well.

Kinda surprised by Martini being behind Onwualu. Onwualu to me has not been impressive at all.

Wondering if Cage will get lions share at DT vs more power run type O's and Tillery vs you spread option O's.

No surprises really...as wooly pointed out glad to see nyles up there....cj Sanders is in a position to succeed...loy said he wouldn't be surprised to see him take one to the house against Texas....no slight to tillery who will get as much snaps as cage but glad to see cage step up his game....interesting that Tillery is playing 2positions....crazy for freshman to learn the nuances of2...smart, determined guy

Keith eludes that Cage is a better nose/shade, and Tillery is working as Day's next in for 3 tech. We're going to see a lot of Tillery. I'm just happy Cage is improving.

was expecting just a "Morgan" as #2 (no "OR")

Oh, I see. Weird that they did that with positions. Seems like an unnecessary "showing of our hand". Everybody knows some positions will rotate more than others. Not sure why we have to announce that.

WR is a dynamic group. We could go small, big, combination - match up nightmare. This group will help during halftime adjustments.

DL: I see those boys rotating in/out a lot depending on down/distance.

LB's, I agree with Wooly - there is a reason NM is listed first on the 2's.

Sebastion will play! I bet he improves special team play.

I actually thought the opposite of the spectrum in that we're not giving them just1person to study tendencies etc...so more to plan for....either could be right

I thought trumbetti would beat out okwara. I'm curious to see how much they rotate.

As others here have said:

excited to see CJ Sanders on return duties. This guy is electric and possibly one of our first highlight reel guys in a while.

Our WRs are deep

Our LB play may surprise us

Our safeties still scare me

Our RBs should be able to get the job done

Where is Malik's head at? So it goes, so goes the team.

I think Torii Hunter, Alize Jones and maybe Trumbetti will have flipped those charts by mid-season. I think Day and Rochell better eat their Wheaties.

Agree, and I also think you'll see CJS and possibly ESB climb the WR ranks. Personally, I think Alize gets the most action after mid season.

Still curious who the 3rd string RB would be if called upon personally. But loving everything else about this depth chart. Excited to see CJ on punt returns as long as it's not a fair catch DaVonte/Goodman situation. Good to see Cage step it up at the end of camp also. Pretty excited also about our DE depth. We're not going to have any stud pass rushers most likely, but that 2-deep looks good and I don't think there is a huge drop off down to Blankenship/Randolph who I assume are 3rd team. Depth looks very good just about everywhere for the first time in forever.

I'm just gonna throw this out there. Is Luatua better than we all give him credit for?

I mean, as a freshman... He was boss in the bowl game. If he improved as a blocker, he could easily be a consistent guy for us. Alize has made all of our blood flow to the netherlands, but Luatua was a big time recruit in his own right. He seemingly lacks in the hands department, but seems like a kid that the light turns on under the big stage, and can lay a mean block down. I'm excited about our TE position. It's truly an embarrassment of riches.

A couple of things.

1. James Onwualu probably had the second best camp in the LB unit and it's kind of not fair to even count Jaylon as #1. Onwualu added mass and most people forget this will be his first year in the same position since his Sophomore year of high school. Consistency and comfortability do wonders.

2. I dont see BK tipping his hand whatsoever and I feel like it was designed to be harder to prepare for. Texas doesnt know who the 2nd string MIKE is. Could it be Morgan? Could it be Grace? Only the ND staff knows.

3. Tyler Luatua is a SOPHOMORE. I am not sure what people were expecting from him last fall behind Koyack and Smythe. Luatua had a great season for what he was asked to do and that was run block. It's going to take guys time to get adjust to the offense and speed of the game. He went from blocking 15-18 year olds to blocking 19-22 year olds.

I like all of our guys, and you're right, a bit embarrassing. Will be more embarrassing when Wright is on board. I think we have some terrific all around guys, and one guy with superstar catching ability. Can't wait to see some 2 TE sets.

I took TE as

Durham Smythe

Tyler Lutua if we want to pound the rock, need a wing or an H-back
OR
Nick Weishar if we want to run and then utilize play-action
OR
Chase Hounshell if we want to pound the rock with two other TE's already out there
OR
Alize Jones if we want to make safeties and linebackers look silly

Luatua was an absolute animal in the bowl game. I posted a thing in his thread about how on the famous Malik-lead-blocker TD, what allowed that play to happen is that he buried the OLB from the H-back position.

IMO in a power spread a dominating run-blocking H-back can be what really opens up the running game. They can move to be a lead blocker anywhere, and when you have to account for them as a possible passer along with a running quarterback, it gives defenses fits.

I think once Alize perfects blocking, he'll make just about everybody look silly.

If he can become even an average blocker, he'll be an unreal TE prospect. His athleticism is unique enough that Kelly has already praised him.

Of course, the same can be said for ESB and Sanders. Kelly doesn't like heaping praise on freshman but he's done with 4 from this class: Jones, Sanders, ESB and Tillery.

That excites me.

Some of those catches he's made in practice are unreal. Thats the type of stuff very few WR's can make let alone TE's.
