Brothers was jumping last night! In my 2 years here, I've never seen more former Irish players in one spot out on the town. KLM, Nix, Slaughter, BJax, Lo Wood, Massa, Stockton, etcetc. Manti and Kona even showed up late night. TP was with Brad Carrico, so I got to talk with him for quite awhile...Brad is the exact reason we root for Notre Dame. What a great kid. KLM and Tyler are awesome too...life of the party type guys but not dicks about it.

Expect to see a lot of former players on the sidelines today.

As for the game, Sean Mele thinks BVG will show multiple blitzes despite it being only the spring game. But Keith Arnold wrote about how aft Diaco's first spring game, Arnold asked him how it went, and he said it went really well considering the defense was something they will never run again (he didn't want anyone having film on his defense). So it will be interesting to see what happens. I think the offense will be EXTREMELY vanilla, but I'm not sure about the defense.

Ah yes, the Spring game. When it's over, projections of records and players contributions will abound with over exuberance and optimism for the coming season will know no bounds. lol

Just to continue with what you were told about BVG and his defense. I met Joe Schmidt's dad last night, and I asked him how Joe liked BVG and the new defense. He said that Joe likes the speed of the defense and thinks his size will benefit from it.

Really? I expect the offense to air it out. CRob, Proise, Brown, we need at least one of these guys to step up and be an every down receiver.

I expect a lot of offense to be shown.

Last year I was worried about our offense. We sputtered multiple times and Golson did not look great.

Did Joe's dad intentionally avoid the question about BVG?

There really isn't a reason for them to show a lot of offense. It'd be nice to see but it isn't really necessary

Every year; "the offense sucked so is that indicative of how good the defense is..."

It's very necessary, IMO. We have no one on the roster that's proven they're an every down receiver, two QBs, none of which took a snap last year, new starting TE, and a position change from RB to slot (Carlisle).

It's not like BK has a bunch of tricks up his sleeves. If people want to see his playbook, look at the last 5+ years of coaching. It's time to see who can be a play maker on offense.

I agree with everything you said in the top part, but it doesn't need to be shown on live television. I'd much rather them find out everything you listed above in practice when no one has the chance to scout it and use it as tape.

I think BK could have plenty of things up his sleeves this year. This is BK's first year with a QB that perfectly fits his offense and has experience to go with it (I'm not including Crist because he stunk). The offense has 3 running backs who are capable of starting, and there seems to be 5 or 6 receivers that are capable of starting against Rice.

So I agree with you that there are questions that need to be answered, but I don't think they need to be answered in the spring game.

Wouldn't you agree, every offensive position can show something today without Kelly opening up the play book? They can run plays from years passed that Kelly has no intention of installing this fall. They can run go routes and hitches but they needn't expose any new wrinkles Kelly is interested in using. I think that is the crux of the argument.

I see that argument, but I don't think there's much to be gained from it. BK has been calling plays for so long at ND, Cinci, and beyond, that I don't think other teams are gaining an advantage by watching his offense play as if it was a real game. I mean, there's 100s of games of his offense by now.

I'd rather them see who's capable of handling a real-time audible, running the routes, etc. Sure you can see who's 'physically' the best option by having them run a fly and a hitch all day, but it's not all about being the best athlete. It's about timing, reaction, and understanding this, and applying it without a second's hesitation, and the spring game is a great chance to mimic that, IMO.

Defense? Be vanilla as hell, because there's not much film on BVG, so we can probably confuse teams for the first half of the year. But there's no tricks to be learned from BK at this point, IMO. It's all about efficiency and execution.

I'd like all starters in sumo suits until Rice.. Seriously, I don't care about the playbook today. Players will make plays when it's time.

As long as we enter September relatively healthy.

Hard to argue with that. Here's to a great spring game.
