There is another rumor on Walter Football that Chiefs negotiations with Alex Smith aren't going well and they could draft a QB in the first round

"Team that will consider a first-round QB: The Chiefs. Negotiations with Alex Smith aren’t progressing well. Must keep long-term options open." - Ian Rapoport

I would love to see that because it would create even more possibilities for trades and mayhem.

I think they get a deal done. Smith is in that second tier of NFL QBs now and there isn't a QB in the draft projected to be that good down the road. But yeah... I like some draft day mayhem myself.

Yea, I would be surprised if they didn't but as a fan of the draft it would make it interesting.

Is this your opinion or that of "experts"? I'm a big Alex Smith fan (the person and QB), so this isn't a knock against him, but I find it hard to believe there isn't a QB in this draft projected to be a mediocre NFL QB at some point down the road.

As for draft day mayhem...trades are always my favorite part of the draft, and they are even better when they include a player. I hope the Pats can deal Maillet on draft day, although I've been saying that since the 2012 draft and it's not likely to happen.

Just my opinion on Smith. I like him as well. But I think he falls in that 12-15 range as far as NFL QBs. As far as your question about this years draft QBs... don't quite follow you. I don't think any of them will be as good down the road as Smith is now if that's what you're asking.

Interesting. Obviously we won't know for several years, but I think there are a few that have Smith's potential. A lot of it depends on what team they go to so maybe we can discuss after the draft.

A side note... I looked at the 2005 draft in which Smith was the #1 overall pick and THREE running backs were taken in the top 5...Ronnie Brown at #2 to Miami, Cedric Benson to Chicago at #4 and Cadillac Williams to Tampa Bay at #5. My how times have changed in the NFL.

Yeah... amazing how far rbs' have fallen as far as the draft goes. But then, the game has changed as well... even in that short of time. As far as the QBs... I hope they all are successful. But you are correct... where they go may very well determine their outcome.

Per John Clayton, Lions want to move up and grab Mike Evans

Jesus. If they're than insistent on getting a WR to make their passing game stacked, they'd be better off trading down and getting Beckham/Lee/Cooks plus a pick or two than getting Evans.

Although, Evans on one side and Calvin on the other....can't keep a safety over the top on both of them.....maybe not a bad idea. Golden in the slot and Bush out of the backfield...

My inner Matt Millen says go for it

That'd be so dumb even for a Lions pick. Completely illogical.

Lord that would be a dangerous offense.

Would it though? You never know what you're getting with a WR or QB, so when you reach for one high it's usually because you have a glaring need that requires you make the pick. There's no guarantee that Evans would be a significant upgrade over Tate... or even an upgrade at all.

Charles Rogers #2 overall... huge bust.
Roy Williams #7 overall... moderate bust.
Mike Williams #10 overall... huge bust.

In fact, the ONLY wide receiver the Lions have drafted in the past decade+ that has made a serious long term impact in the NFL is Calvin Johnson. They've spent 4 top 10 selections on WRs and got one Pro Bowl level player. And that's not even looking at their 2nd/3rd round busts where you still expect a quality starter.

I don't know... if I'm the Lions I make this pick if and only if I'm 100% sure that Mike Evans is the truth. If I have any question marks at all, I'm drafting OL or CB or LB... or I'm trading back and grabbing a WR later.

Mike Evans reminds me so much of Michael Floyd.

If the Lions drafted Mike Evans, I'd have to check my eyes when watching him line up with Golden Tate.

Barring a trade up I fully expect Mike Evans to go to the Bucs. They want him bad and he should there.

Kiper was just on Mike & Mike. He thinks that the Rams want the Browns to trade up to #2 and get Manziel. If they don't trade up to #2, he thinks Cleveland take him at #4

Uhg. Manziel is no way a top 10 QB. I feel sorry for Browns fans if they draft him.

I was looking at it that they would go three wide with Evans, Johnson and Tate. With Bush and Theo splitting time in the backfield.

Bias and things he's done off the field aside, how in the hell can u say he is not a "top 10" QB? Serious question.

I could be wrong, but I read it as a QB worthy of a top 10 pick. In this case, I agree 100%. His risk of bust is so high, it's not worth it when you look at who else would be available.

To start off, I meant Top 10 draft pick as a QB. My fault for poor wording.

1st thing is his physicality. He will need an elite OL to protect him. Within the 1st 5 games of his career the NFL defenses will have figured him out. If he runs he will get crushed. End of story.

2nd thing is his decision making. Against LSU which has put 11 DBs into the NFL over the last 2 years, he was terrible.

Alabama had him figured out after 1.5 games. He also has a penchant for trying the impossible:

3rd thing is he lacks good mechanics right now. While fixable, this is a problem for small qbs.

4th thing is his offense at A&M was basically a one-read scheme.

No way does he warrant a 1st round pick. I think Bortles and Carr are more pro ready passers. But I am not a GM.

If I were the Jags, Browns, or Raiders I would be all over Manziel personally assuming that Clowney or Watkins weren't available. But that's just me....
