Notre Dame’s 2014 recruiting class has already signed their letters-of-intent and are looking forward to joining the Irish football team early this summer and while we know all the familiar names like Nick Watkins, Sam Mustipher, Quentin Nelson, Drue Tranquill and Nyles Morgan, there still might be another prospect joining the class soon as a preferred walk-on if he should choose to and that’s Westlake (Calif.) wide receiver, Alex Egurbide.
The 6-foot-6, 200-pound prospect has received offers from a number of Ivy League schools and has also had a number of big time Division I programs invite him to come to their programs as a preferred walk-on, including Notre Dame, Oregon, Michigan, Purdue and Minnesota.
“Everything’s been going really well and I’m looking forward to making my decision very soon,” said Egurbide. “I took a number of visits over spring break and saw some great schools, so now I’ll just discuss things over with my parents and decide where I want to go.”
South Bend ended up being one of those spring destinations.
“It was really a great visit and I feel really blessed to have the opportunity to go there if I so choose,” stated the California native humbly. “The only downside of my visit there was that all the coaches weren’t there, so I didn’t get to meet with many of them. I did sit down with Dave Peloquin, the director of player personal, and he told me a little bit about the university and about their football program. He told me what being a walk-on at Notre Dame meant and then he had one of the students show me around campus.”
Other than not being able to speak to the coaches it sounds like everything else concerning his visit went splendidly.
“It’s a beautiful campus and I like the way it’s self-contained,” explained Egurbide. “It’s not like Michigan, which feels like it was just dumped right in the middle of Ann Arbor, so I like Notre Dame’s campus quite a bit more.
“Obviously, their football program is also impressive and they have all the best facilities to help them be successful. Their tradition is amazing and being able to touch the ‘Play Like A Champion’ sign was really big for me.”
With everything all said and done now, what’s the Westlake receiver’s timeline on making a decision?
“I’m in the process of talking to my parents and I’ll probably make my decision in the next couple days. I’m pretty much down to Purdue, Minnesota and Notre Dame, so that’s who I’ll be choosing from over in the end.”
