ESPN, during Bk's interview, had a ticker that said ND lost to Rutgers in the pin stripe bowl....

What's the deal with Shumate? Haven't heard anything on him.
I asked this over at Scout. O'Malley said Shumate is running with the 2's behind Collinsworth and Baratti is behind Max. I remember last year Coach Cooks said that Shumate was a guy that learned through a lot of reps and not so much in the film room so when he misses time it hurts him a lot. I'd assume that is still the case. Also, O'Malley thinks Farley would be the S to replace either starter as the staff seems to really believe in him.

Dear God, please no. NO. No. NOooooooooo!
2012 Farley sounds good, 2013 Farley sounds bad. Hopefully he was just thinking too much and putting too much pressure on himself last year, which I think he was doing.
Didn't we declare post season that many of his tackling ills was because of a shoulder injury?
Or is that wishful thinking that I made up in my head?
Yea, so specifically Kelly has made a point to say that getting Redfield on the field is very important as he's such a gifted athlete back there. However, he isn't able to QB the back end the way they'd like. So, in turn they have to compensate by having somebody next to him that can. Since, that is where Shumate currently struggles it makes sense that it would go Collinsworth then Farley if Redfield is playing. Ideally, it would be Redfield and Shumate as I think its clear those two are the best athletes but neither is grasping the responsibilities like they need to.
Side note: Collinsworth continues to look good against the run or in short area situations but very shaky in coverage.
It sounds like our Safeties fall into one of two groups-- Athletes and QBs. We'd all love to see two Athletes playing together, but you've gotta have at least one QB out there to get everyone lined up correctly.
Might explain Farley's uneven history as well. In 2012, he was just asked to be an Athlete, and he performed admirably. In 2013, they asked him to do some QBing, and he struggled. He's more athletic than Collinsworth, and has started more games than any other S on our roster; so maybe he's finally ready to QB.
Regardless, it's frustrating to have so much talent at S which never sees to field because of the mental demands of the position.

Well said.
Just a note. Alabama is DB-U and they had to get a JUCO to play the position in 2012. In 2013 they had two guyst that we recruited as well, and both really struggled.
Long story short, we have recruited pretty well at Safety. It just doesn't always pan out perfectly.

Whisky I really hope you are correct, but honestly I think we have seen his best. The Stanford debacle showed his instincts, and if those have not changed, I hope we don't see him.
Ha Ha Clinton Dix was a first round draft pick. He couldn't have been that bad
Don't take my post as an endorsement of Farley, or a prediction that he'll somehow redeem himself this season. I'll be as nervous as anyone if he ends up seeing major minutes.
That said, I'm not as down on him as some around here. When asked to just be an Athlete in 2012, he performed admirably. The most logical way to square that with his painful 2013 season is "paralysis by analysis" from being asked to play QB instead of just Athlete. If true, that's mostly a mental thing, so it's not unreasonable to suggest he could improve significantly as an upperclassmen.
My post was mostly concerned with our S "positions"-- the Athlete and the DB QB. We have an abundance of Athletes, but a shortage of cerebral QB types. And--unfortunately--our QB types are both few and a significant downgrade in athleticism from our Athlete types. Collinsworth, Farley... who else?
So our dreams of a hyper-athletic duo like Redfield and Shumate flying around the secondary making plays will probably never come to fruition. We just have to hope that someone among the Safeties has the intangibles to be that veteran leader.
