I don't get this. We have two running backs that ND has not seen in a long time and he is going to play Rudy over them? Cam has surprised me so far and I appreciate what he has done but two SEC running backs are waiting and should get most of the carries.

I'm thinking he is trying to motivate Folston to take his game to the next level.

I don't know what Brian Kelly is going to do. And I really don't care. (I just want the wins.) I don't presume to be as smart or smarter than the coaches. Based upon what we were talking about I explained my interpretation of the last three or four things Kelly said about the individuals and the position. He spoke highly of the way Cam is playing the position, and his familiarity with the offense. He said GB made too many errors, and that he wasn't getting the dominant effort he expected from TF. Is Kelly trying to push the group? Is this the way things are going to shake out? I have no idea!

Coach speak for trying to get one or the other to step it up a notch. The first to do it probably gets the first real serious look. Cam will be Cam... solid when needed.

Exactly. There's a lot of coachspeak in what Kelly says during camp, especially this and talk of Davaris Daniels not starting, so you have to take it all with a grain of salt. Daniels just came back from being suspended from the university and is nursing an injury. Kelly won't just give him his job back publicly because it takes away from the guys that have been here the entire time. For example, we all know #5 will be under center against Rice but Kelly hasn't even given him his job back yet.

That being said, Chris Brown looks like a new and improved WR this year and will definitely push DD.

If Cam didn't keep moving up the charts and grabbing more and more carries, I would agree it's coach speak. Regardless if we think TF or GB are better, if Cam is better at the things we don't recognize (pass block/ run block/ catching out of backfield) why would we question him as the leader? Neither TF or GB are breaking a 75 yarder vs FSU or USC. We need the best all around that can get 4 yards a run.

Coach speak would involve a rookie or redshirt....not Cam who is proven solid. I'm not sold on GB. Didn't look good in spring besides flashes. TF is solid 2nd string but can he handle the load? Maybe "coach speak" is truth and he can't make that step. Nothing tells me they DESERVE 1st string over Cam even though they are more talented, physically.

Food for thought...

Couldn't disagree more. Why won't TF or GB break a 75 yarder vs. FSU or USC? GB didn't look good in spring?!? Why couldn't TF handle the load?

If any OF ND's backs are gonna break a 75 yarder against either of those teams...it's not gonna be Cam.

I agree with most of the above. Kelly requires his backs to do much more than just run the ball. Miss a blitz pickup and QB is out for the game and or fumbles and or throws an interception.

Sheesh... all three will play, and play significant minutes, because all three are good and better at certain things.

Captaincy type leadership is different from being the most talented and/or explosive guy on the field. Captaincy type leadership translates into Captaincy, not "the most carries." Cam has demonstrated to the staff that he can act as a selfless yet highly motivating Captain [see: off the field work ethic and on the field toughness and willingness to tutor a "competing" teammate] without being thought of as a home-run threat. Cam is fine and useful to the team in many ways.

Folston OR Bryant will get the alpha-wolf carries this year though --- unless both lay turds in their punchbowls [how? imagine fumbling or not picking up blitzes]. Coach would like both of them to get a little more "cam" in them.... thus his honest remarks about Cam's strengths.

The other "coachspeakey" thing was Kelly's candid talk about the offensive line. Needing to gel. He actually said he thought they were victims of too much coaches' experiments, moving guys all around. I thought it was interesting that Kelly brought that up. I think his "guard set instead of tackle set" comment about Steve Elmer was particularly more about the negative affects of coaching that a fall off in Elmer's game.

I just don't think that we asking TF and GB to "split an atom". We're just asking them to run and pass block...which I think is easy to see for us arm-chair QB's. The thing that we might not see is if they are doing the right thing when there is an audible called at the line. That too, shouldn't be that hard for them...it is afterall what they practice all week. I hope that someone can do all the things required or we'll be right back to personnel giving up tendancies.

Bryant looks the part of a beast. I expect great things from him-more than just to contribute. Folston, Cam-a three headed hydra running behind the beast of an O-line. Expectations from me are also high on Golson. I have visions of him running the plays to near perfection and dropping the passes into the hands of ND's receivers. Recievers-ahhhh. DD, Breezy, the TE's, RB's coming out of the backfield. Nothing but green Kool-Aid for me.

Unfortunately, we won't know sh!t until the Rice game.

However, with Bogs and Buster in close proximity to SB, I expect algae issues with Rice's drinking H2O, similar to what they did in Toledo.

Cannot wait to see what GB can do this season.

What do you guys think about the wide outs though? Read earlier BK said Chris Brown was 'by far' the most impressive WR so far.

I'm excited to see what Justin Brent does, but the last two freshman I've gotten excited about (Shaq Evans & Davonte Neal) didn't pan out... lol

I don't want to be too negative, but I'm gonna be nervous if Lombard is in the mix at tackle. The guy just doesn't move his feet well enough, even from the guard position sometimes. If he's trying to keep athletic DE's from getting the edge, it could be bad news bears. I think in the end Elmer will be good to go if he sticks at RT, and I hope Hanratty gets a shot to compete for a guard spot with Hegarty/Lombard. He impressed me last year filling in late and rotating with Elmer.

If Amir keeps his confidence up and CJ Prosise gets some opportunities, defenses won't know who to focus on before any given play. So many potential weapons offensively, and I think either QB will bring that to light. And I think BK's comments about TF and GB rung like coach speak, as others said. GB looked so impressive in those live reps at the end of the previous video, gotta contain my excitement.

CJ Prosise (F spelling and Michigan) in the slot could be deadly, because 90% of LBs won't be able to guard him, and he could dominate a slot corner in blocking, and with our run game expected to be explosive, that could mean a lot of big plays out of the 3 headed monster.

Offensive line is literally the last place I worry about on this team. We are deep and talented. If Lombard isn't performing, in comes Elmer. There is a competent, neh.. excellent backup for every position on the offensive line. We even seem to have a good in line TE in Luatua.

Honestly, I hope we play all of the guys through the game. If we are uptempo and playing fast, we should cycle guys in and out to keep guys fresh and opposing defensive lineman on their toes!

I should amend my statement to say that Lombard is the only one I'm concerned about, and even then only if he's playing tackle (I think he's good at guard, but still needs to move his feet better in pass pro). Didn't mean to come off like the whole unit concerns me; there's far too much talent and far too good of a coach for things not to come together at some point.

The espn bus tour is in South Bend today. They are doing live segments throughout the day reporting on ND and practice. It's still crazy to me that we are underdogs in half of the games this season - although history seems to show ND often has better seasons when national expectations aren't as high.

I definitely prefer the underdog role as oppose to favored, in any game. I'd rather the team come in with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove.

Along with FBOLT's liquid assessment, I think this is a really good point. It has been on my mind. Has anyone seen a video clip of CJ that hasn't looked good lately. All I have seen is him particularly sure handed, confident, using speed and moves to juke much smaller looking db's, and I haven't seen him out of position or miss a single catchable ball.

With the Tight end seem routes, DD, WF, and CBreezy deep, and Golson's mobility, a combination of Prosise, (with Carlisle who has looked good, too) underneath could be pretty potent.
