Funny story, I'm not a huge Nolan fan either. I got black out drunk for the first pep rally last year, and as he was talking I was trash talking him with some things I'm not too proud of. Wasn't my finest moment haha

It's ok, Jimmy. Evey hard core boozer on here has talked trash with some national, regional, or specialized personality.

Some of my more memorable spats-- my garbageman, Charles O'Bannon, a mother on her daughter's wedding night, Dickey Betts, the former lead singer of Jackyl, Brian Urlacher, and Bill Bellamy.

Come on guys, temper the enthusiasm a little bit. I'm always so tempted to be right there with you but we have an unknown product on the defense and a completely revamped offense and new offensive linemen.

Not yet: Michigan, Stanford, Louisville, FSU, UNC, ASU and Northwestern might have something to say about that. With a tip of the hat to the others because upsets are commonplace in college football, especially with a young team.

Those are some potent teams we are playing. Michigan always plays us tough, Stanford will run, Louisville has their old coach back, FSU, UNC won 6 of their last 7 games and their QB is now in his 2nd year. ASU is a tough team and we were lucky to get the breaks last year (with apologies to Grace and Councell) and Northwestern is a dark horse this year.

I just can't get on board after having been overconfident the last 10+ years.

Excited to see what we do but I don't count any of those games as expected wins. New DC, new OC, new QB coach, new defensive scheme, 8 players in the NFL, young across the board, so many unknowns that I have to temper the expectations.

Fuck it, we're winning 11 and making the playoffs :)

The bolded part is actually eerily similar to the 1988 team, just sayin ;)

So what do a garbageman, Charles O'Bannon, a mother on her daughter's wedding night, Dickey Betts, the former lead singer of Jackyl, Brian Urlacher, and Bill Bellamy all have in common?

That is right! They all have suffered the wrath of IrishHog!!!!

Ain't nothin' like hog wrath!

Dude probably needs to be no higher than 4th or 5th on S depth chart.

Release the Farley apologists.

Nay. Never been a fan. He does have nice hair though.

Hopefully he didn't miss the memo about the move.

While Farley's play in '13 was disappointing, he played pretty well in '12.

Regardless of your feelings though, it's nice when a guy with Farley's level of experience is your backup option at any position.

Nolan is a goober, that's no reason to hate someone.

I like Nolan, personally.

Jimmy... i'm ashamed of you picking on a nice guy like that. Not to mention, it's not like he could do anything about it. Not cool dude. Penance... two naked laps.

haha Nolan is a bit of a legend but yeah he's probably there in some sort of "jobs for the boys" fashion. Probably the only school in america that does not have a chick hosting the video coverage for football.

I LOL'd. What a group.

I'd have fought you if I'd been there for the Dickey Betts incident though. Who doesn't love "Jessica" and "Ramblin' Man"? lol

CULVER, Ind. -- Has there been a more valuable offseason tool for Notre Dame than the grouptext?

NFL draft pick TJ Jones has mentioned it as a way of keeping in touch with current Irish receivers. Jaylon Smith said in the spring that linebackers past and present kept the conversation going the same way following the 2013 season.

Sure enough this spring, with media members and fans at seemingly every turn asking how the defensive line would replace a pair of NFL draft picks from a season ago, a new position group caught on to the fad.

Defensive end Sheldon Day, 6-foot-2, 285 pounds, has dropped weight since last season and is excited to focus more on rushing the passer.
Junior Sheldon Day led the charge. The only returning starter to what had been the backbone of Notre Dame's defense in recent years had heard enough questions about losing Stephon Tuitt and Louis Nix. Enough that he became fed up, challenging his fellow linemen this offseason.

"I feel like it was the media saying we’re the weak link of this year’s defense -- 'What is the D-line going to do?' And all of this," Day said. "I took it upon myself that I’ve never been that guy where I’m part of the weak link. I refuse to be a part of that. I just kind of reached out to them and said, ‘Do you guys want to be viewed like this? If not, then we need to do this, this, this and this.'"

The early returns have pleased Brian Kelly thus far.

"Our defensive line is a 180 in terms of where they are this year compared to last year, as how they work as a group," the fifth-year Irish coach said. "They have been outstanding and that's led by Sheldon Day. Sheldon Day has been a great leader for us with that group."

Day's emergence as a leader is surprising if for no other reason than his personality, like that of most others, was minimized by the larger-than-life Nix, who went to Houston in the third round of the NFL draft in May. Day laughed when asked if he was just waiting for the nose guard to leave town before showing his true colors.

"It’s not that I was waiting for him to get out of here; I feel like I was just waiting my time," Day said. "Sometimes it’s not appropriate for you to talk if you’re not the older guy or the leader of the D-line."

There is little doubt who leads the unit now, as Day has played 24 games over two seasons, having started during a sophomore campaign that saw him notch 5.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage.

The 6-foot-2, 285-pounder enjoys the simplified approach of moving inside in new coordinator Brian VanGorder's 4-3 front, saying that the defensive linemen get off the ball quicker rather than catching the offensive linemen. To do that, Day dropped five pounds, subbing honey buns and other sugars for high-protein meats and greens.

Of the sacrifice of honey buns, he cracked: "I walk past a Sam’s Club and it hurts my heart."

A pain well worth it, however, in the name of getting a better burst toward the quarterback.

"It was a mutual agreement. I felt like last year I had to gain all that weight to hold the O-linemen and set up the linebackers," Day said. "This year as I’m coming off the ball, I have to be quicker, more explosive. I met with our nutritionist and she helped me come up with a plan and I’ve been following it."

So true and she works with Regis, maybe he can hook ND up.

Though this shirt she can burn.

The shirt was a jest, and I think we can laugh about it now. If a fake girlfriend helps produce a 12 win regular season again, I hear Golson is dating the hottest girl you'll never see.

Besides, Katie stood up for Regis, so in my book I think that cancels the shirt.

Whether it's better or worse, I'm just happy to have some excitement. Diacos defense with the Tommy Rees offense was a good combo to create the most boring football team I've ever watched.

They won a lot if games for us, but damn if it wasn't the most consistently vanilla football team ever.

+1. I don't think I'm ever been frustrated watching ND games but last year took the cake.

They never complemented each other very well, which is partly why our offense has struggled. I'm excited to see ND play with a coherent strategy-- quick strike offense and aggressive defense.

Tyler is certainly getting a lot of screen time through these first few days.

I know the coaches have a say in what gets edited together... motivational ploy to fire him up? Or well-deserved highlights?

I think a little of both. I think he's done a good job of coming prepared to fill a specific role which is in-line TE that we lost when Niklas left. Tyler will not be our traditional ND TE that is making plays down the field. That will be Smythe, Koyack, and Weishar when he gets his shot. However, Luatua might prove to be the best in-line of the 4 already which is a huge development that he is receiving some credit for.
