We've got a lot of athletic "bigs" who could be plugged in at WDE to rush the passer. At SDE? Not so much. If Ishaq can hold down the starting role there, with Rochelle keeping him fresh, our DL as a whole will be much more productive. But if Ishaq continues to be a one-dimensional pass-rusher who can't produce inside, what does SDE look like? Rochelle starting, and backed up by... Matuska? Hounshell? Utupo? Not good.

Totally agree, I guess I meant I could see Rochelle eating into Ishaq's snaps not that they would move Ishaq. If the pass rush difference between the two is marginal then I would think Rochelle could steal reps by being better against the run. An assumption I'm making based on his size and strength.

I also think a different personality from BVG could hopefully assist in him turning it on this year...being such a quiet guy, he may need a different coaching style to bring it out....

Personally, I'm fine with Rochelle backed up by Matsuka or Hounshel at SDE-- I think those two whiteboys are going to be pretty productive if they stay healthy.

But I completely agree that it would be best if Ishaq could start and get some pass rush, allowing Rochelle to slide in the rotation behind him and Day depending on the situation.

Does anyone else see Rochell as more of a 4-3 DT then DE?

He can probably be a productive backup at both DT and SDE. I think he'd be most valuable to the team doing so, but that assumes we've got someone starting at SDE in front of him.

At least initially, I'd kind of like to see Okwara and Williams almost splitting time at WDE-- keep both of those dudes fresh and attacking. All. Game. Long. Maybe almost like a 55-45 split with Okwara getting the 55. Then slide Ishaq over for some snaps at SDE, but Rochelle getting the bulk of the load at SDE, Hounshell getting some reps too.

Then, maybe after a couple, few games, when a FR is ready and can be relied upon, start giving some to run whoever that is and sort of reevaluate the depth and PT.

Does Day have a backup? Seriously.

In what we've heard about BVG's scheme, it seems like there isn't another guy that can do what we are expecting will be expected out of Day. So when Day is out, does the entire DL scheme have to, more or less, change?

My guess is a little unorthodox:

LT: Stanley
LG: ELmer
C: Martin
RG: Heggarty
RT: Lombard

THey need to just lock-down the left side of the line for unity sake. Lombard can play tackle at a high level. If McGlinchy outplays him, Lombard to RG.

Hanratty and Nelson and the rotation OGs.
McGlinchy is the back-up T.

I dont think lombard could play tackle

Where does Trumbetti fit in? I know he wasn't mentioned today, but I have heard fantastic comments regarding his play so far. Some people even said he had a shot to start.

Folston's head shot looks like an experiment went bad in chem class.

In the spring Hounshell was a guy mentioned as being a 3tech as well as Hayes who I think has very good potential there. I also think that Rochelle being the 5th best DL at this point will see time at both spots DT and SDE. However, I don't think Day comes off the field that much. We really need him to stay healthy all year, which is something he hasn't done in the previous 2.

Personally I think Kelly was mainly talking about players that we haven't seen yet (freshman). I think Trumbetti right now is #1 off the bench at WDE or in pass rushing situations.

He did in 2012. He is pretty athletic when healthy.

I understand that Elmer as a Swing LG/RT (depending on whether or Heggarty is a better guard than McGlinchy is a tackle is the most likely) is the most likely scenario , but I like the experience and stablitiy.

If Hegarty, or Hanratty for that matter, proves better than McGlinchey, I would kick Elmer to RT before Lombard.

Ok, so we've got 6 experienced, "quality" guys on the DL: Williams, Day, Jones, Okwara, Hounshell, and Rochell. Other than Day, I'd say the quality of each of the others is at least suspect in some regard-- consistency, health, experience, etc. Could probably throw Williams in there as well close to Day-- we sort of have to think he'll at least be an ok starter.

If we pencil in Williams and Okwara as DE's, Jones and Day and DT's, and Hounshell and Rochell as DE's/DT's, then it seems like the core should be there for a decent 2-deep for 3 of the 4 DL positions. Springman being out means the back up for Jones is a giant question mark. And that may be the only real worry. Hopefully Cage and/or Mokwuah steps up in hurry. Due to this, and some of the flexibility in a 4-3, not having a true back up to Jones might not be a huge issue. Passing downs could mean Jones could get off the field and then any number of guys could step in and play DT. So some concern is alleviated there. But Jones may have moved up real close to Jaylon on the list of guys the team can't afford to lose.

*Then if/when guys like Matuska, Trumbetti, Hayes, Bonner, etc. are ready to step in, the depth and quality gets even better. It may not drastically lessen the blow of losing Jones at some point in the season, but we could have some solid to outstanding quality and depth all along the line, minus behind Jones.

Jay Hayes could be an option. I think he'll see time at the three tech and SDE.

Wouldn't it be nice if we had one more big on the defensive line? Someone athletic enough to play SDE but big enough to play the three. You know, a five star guy that could be an anchor. I guess it vanderdoesn't matter at this point. The roster is what it is.

Man, we really need to go after big DL boys like we've gone after big OL guys the last few years.

Sorry if this has already been discussed but was just looking at the freshman height and weights change from spring to now and most obviously put on weight but Trumbetti dropped from 260 to 250. Hoping he can provide a nice rush cause we will need it.

Yes but the fact that he was one of the only to drop weight whereas most of the others added around 10-15 pounds I just found interesting.

I've seen him in person and I can tell you he is a VERY thick 250 for a 18 year old.

By all accounts Trumbetti is a workout freak. Meaning he really enjoys that part of the process. Not somebody that I worry about being out is shape or poor condition at the moment.

I think my post may have been misconstrued. I'm not worried at all about the weight I found it A) good to see B) a interesting choice by the staff.
