Am I the only one that thinks Riggs will be the starting corner along with Russel?

I know everyone thinks he's perfect for the slot/nickel, and maybe he slides there when we're in nickel, but I also think he has a great chance to be the 2nd corner.

I posted this in the General Team Info thread, but they also peg Riggs as starting opposite Russell.

I'm looking forward to video of Corey Robinson catching anything and everything thrown his way. He is quickly becoming by favorite player.

I think OL could make a serious argument for #1, but I'd still probably go with corner.

Eager to see:

- Golson's timing/rhythm with the receivers.

- Specifically the development of CRob, Fuller & CB. I know what we'll get from DD. If the aforementioned 3 take the expected leap, this offense could be scary.

- Koyack always struck me as a hell of a player that hasn't found his mean streak. I'd like to see a little more fire in his belly..

- Of course I'm excited about the Folston/Bryant/McD show. The weapons on this team could be abundant.. We simply haven't had this level of talent in the Kelly era.
It's always been sprinkled around with undesirable facilitators.

- How freakish will Jaylon actually be?? This kid could have some serious ND lore when it's all said and done.

- Is Councell a real option? Is Schmidt a real starter?

- DL.. I think the pass rush is there but can we stop the Stanfords from lining up and pounding? Maybe a Hayes, Mokwuah or Cage comes in ready to assist in that department. Really my only legitimate concern besides MLB.

A poster on II started a thread on players that are being overlooked and he mentioned Springmann and here's what Tj had to say.

TJ,

Springmann, by most recent indications, is in very good shape physically and appears set to provide a good anchor where needed in the interior DL. Possibly Hounshell, too, albeit more at a 3-/5-technique. Time will tell and here's to good health now for both.

I'll give you two young guys, one each side of the ball, who technically fit your description: Smythe at TE and Redfield at FS.

A healthy Springmann all year long would be very good news.

Slot receivers. Any/all of them. They will reap the benefits of the DD, CB, WF, CRob platoon on the outside. That's what I'm most excited about.

It seems silly, but after only having seen him catch the ball 7 times, I felt like CJ was on the cusp of being electric. A more open offense will benefit everyone, but the inside receivers especially. There are several outside threats, and history says that the TE position will need to be a focus of the defense, leaving the unproven inside guys to make noise.

Per TJ some intial thoughts on the freshman

Noting the clear difference between physique/appearances and somewhat restricted summer workout play in limited action to date....

Physical: Blankenship, Cage, Hill, the OL group

Summer play: Watkins, Weishar, Tranquill, Morgan

Again, though, I caution reading too much into this at this stage. Just some thoughts, shared impressions, etc...

Then Sampson posted that it's rare the staff gets their #1 guy at CB but they did with Watkins and he's been "outstanding" in workouts. He expects it to show itself quickly.

I'm looking forward to all of it...except for the bolded.

ND will never lose another game and every player on the roster is an All-American and Heisman contender based off the few seconds of video we're allowed to view.

Pssh, I like that more than the writing off of 5:s: freshman due to a few clips. Actually, I prefer that to the long Jack Nolan intros, too.

Sampson is hearing that Cage will be hard to keep of the field this fall.

That's nice to hear considering he was a guy that the staff didn't offer him until mid January.

Is that because he is just that good or because other guys aren't showing they can play?

I was supposed to quote Arrowryan's post.

Sampson and TJ haven't been very specific so I'd guess a little of both. TJ mentioned him as one of the best freshman from a physical standpoint and we are a little thin at DT so probably a little of both. I just know from the end of last cycle that I was reading that Cage is workhorse. Loves to lift and is very focused so it wouldn't surprise me if he was a notch above what he played last season at from a strength standpoint.

I agree. I think this maximizes the talent on the field. We always rotate in guys anyway, but if those are our starting and crunch time guys, that is the most amount of athleticism ND has had in it's secondary in a while.

Rotate in Hardy, Collinsworth and Baratti at S, and Watkins, Farley, and Butler when advantageous at different DB positions, and we are pretty well stocked.

Please do not play Farley....

Excited to hear how Morgan is doing in fall camp. Also looking forward to the QB play. Golson should be the starter and I expect him to play well...I also expect malik to push him hard all year, and hopefully it just makes golson better. I keep thinking back to the interview post blue-gold game where Everett was waiting to be interviewed and malik walked up like it was his show. Thought Everett looked a little taken aback by the bravado. Think we have two solid guys there and could have some excellent production.

I'm also excited to have some depth- and frankly, some of the older players better try not to get hurt or be willing to play hurt, because there is talent behind them itching for their shot...and I specifically think about grace. It really is now of never for him and he may have to rush back even if he is not as ready as he would like to be. Because Morgan (and Randolph?) is gonna be coming hard for that position and if he doesn't play early, I think he is in danger of losing his starting spot for good.

It's a good problem to have as a team. But I would try not to get hurt if you are a player.

Can't wait to get started. Even watched freakin SEC media days (reminded how much I dislike that darian guy on espn college football today or whatever they call that show) just to get some college football fix. Go Irish!

It's not out there yet. Mike Frank says he is hearing it could be Aug 1st for the presser and August 4th for the first day of practice, but again, nothing is official at this point.

This isn't official, but it looks like Coach Kelly will talk to the media on August 1st, player interviews on the 3rd, practice starts the 4th, open practice to the media could be the 9th, and it looks like media day will be the 19th

per Scout

My god I can't believe Martini is still only gonna be a freshman. He committed so long ago and then there was zero drama.

Is the team going to canp shiloh?

No, they are going to Culver Academies instead. They recently installed turf and the staff wants the team to be practicing on turf. Shiloh said that they would install it but many were skeptical it would be finished in time. Also, Culver has laundry facilities and Shiloh does not. Culver is about 50 minutes versus 2 hrs. to Shiloh. The lake that Culver sits on might be an attraction as well. This is all per II.

I had a XC meet there back in 2009, it's a really nice academy. But I still wish the team just practiced in South Bend the whole time
