2014 Captains

Right now, all things being equal; Martin (O), Brindza (ST), and Councell.

Alts: Koyack, Day, Russell, and Smith.

Edit: I feel so guilty for leaving Cam McDaniel off the list; is there a rule that captains at ND must be single?

Given the oft-discussed lack of leadership - especially on defense - last year, it feels like we really need some permanent captains. But this is such a young team it's hard to see who.
I'd guess Russell and/or Grace on the defensive side. Martin and maybe Cam on O (the O Line can be such a unit unto itself that it feels like it helps to have a skill position player, too. Cam wouldn't be my first choice but no one else really jumps out). And Brindza on ST.
But that's an outsider's view. I'm sure the coaching staff knows better who leads the locker room. Still, there's no obvious Manti or KLM on this club.

Okay let's look at this by position group, because I clearly don't have a clue as to what I am saying* :

Defense

MLB - If Grace or Schmidt take over they warrant a shot. If it becomes Morgan, not so much.

WLB - Is going to be Smith, and he is definitely a "tweener." Has the skill and is showing the leadership but is a sophomore. If I were the coaches I would at least wait until next year to encourage development of his game this year, and to encourage him to come back a fourth year (I know that isn't a whole lot of encouragement when you have bazillions of NFL bucks staring you down.)

SLB - If Councell takes over, in other words, takes the majority of snaps run or pass, and only yields for special packages, he would be a really good choice for a second defensive captain. Ben taking over the strong side would be a very important step in this defense becoming very good, quickly!

DT (interior including nose), Hounshell is too much of an unknown, although his work ethic is what you want. Day is socially, work ethic, and team work-wise what you want, and except for some stunning lacks of judgment (Pitt) and the fact that he is a Junior, he is the man. He may be another that could benefit from a year of concentrating on improving his craft.

As far as the rest of the defensive linemen they are either too young or need to work on the level of their game, at this point, in my opinion.

DE - Ishaq would be a possibility if he is able to raise his game to his potential level. IF.

Corners - Do you off-task KR from developing into one of the best corners in the nation? Which I believe he can do. And he is a junior. I believe he is the kind of natural vocal leader that is the guy you want backing your captain. And not this year the captain himself. This would help with last year's problem, which appeared to be thin leadership after the captains, themselves.

Everyone else at corner is too inexperienced and or too young, except Cody Riggs. I feel as if he would be a great choice if he had come up in the program, but picking him would send mixed signals.

Safety. WOW. The only guy that appears to be taking over is Max, and again he is too young, and in the middle of growing into the position. Collinsworth? He has the work ethic and the experience, but what about play time this year?

This is a perfect year to make a special team statement, and honor a guy who has done a remarkable amount for the program in his four years. Brindza deserves it, is a good candidate, and maybe putting him there makes an important statement for the team this year.

On offense, many think Golson and Daniels are out with their violations. I don't know. I don't care. Let's see!

Nick Martin is almost being elevated to captain by Brian Kelly. Brian gave him the "Zack Martin Mantle" as clearly in the press conference as if he had a coronation ceremony during the PC.

Next choice on offense, Cam, Christian, and Ben in that order. CBreezy is an outside possibility, because of the special regard the coaches have been holding his effort, but that is all. Other upper classmen such as Hanratty, Hegarty and others just haven't established themselves as starters, and with the underclassmen coming in, who knows? Maybe ND will put an offensive lineman in the NFL that wasn't a clear starter at ND. Possible; in fact more possible than any lineman becoming a captain, other than Nick Martin in the next two years, IMO.

(*Making me unique on this site. EDIT : I know!)

I hope Golson is the captain next year, because that will mean he displayed undeniable leadership this year.

I'm in the "Can't see Kelly naming him a Captain this year" camp. Yes, he did the crime (not literally) and did the time, but you can't have a guy that was kicked off the team this time last year come back and be a captain when you have someone like Cam, Lombard, or N-Mart doing things the right way.

Here's to Golson leading this offense to an incredible season and earning that "C" on his jersey for next year.

If Golson were a senior this year I think there would be a very tiny chance that he would be a captain but as many have pointed out it's unusual for a junior to be named captain. Add the fact he is coming off a suspension and hasn't even been named the starter and I just don't think there is any way.

But I do think at least 2 captains will be juniors because there is very little senior leadership this year. If Collinsworth is a starter then he will be the only senior starter on D other than possibly Riggs. I think Russell and Day will be our defensive starters. I think Martin and Cam will be our offensive captains. Even if Cam doesn't start he has been so productive in his career and I think he will get a lot of PT. He has proven himself to me. And it sounds like he has been a tremendous mentor to Tarean and Greg.

Riggs could be an outside bet, its not beyond the realm of possibility..Russell Wilson went to Whisky as a GS and was made a team captain

When was the last time a Sophomore was made a captain? I'm not against it, and if Jaylon ends up being the motivational leader this defense needs, I'm all for it.

So after reading the SI piece on Jaylon ( Notre Dame's Jaylon Smith seeks every answer in pursuit of greatness - College Football - SI.com ), I think he's got to be one. Would it make sense for us to have 3/4 captains be on the defensive side of the ball? Martin, Day, KVR, Jaylon are the players most often reported this summer as taking a leadership role. Brown too, but he hasn't shown it on the field yet IMO.
I'd really be surprised if a true sophomore were to be named captain. Jaylon obviously has all the talent in the world but even Manti wasn't a captain until senior year.

I could see it

But I think it will be #72, #6 and #38

I would love if Jaylon was one though

Cole Luke??? Or are you thinking Schmidt #38?

No bro, I think Cole Luke will be our captain

Thank you for fixing that. I thought Luke was 3? Who does he think he is Desean Jackson and have two different numbers?

I am going to revise my old hogwash on this (I am really bad at things like picking captains and give you my top five each way with Kyle Brindza being a captain, representing special teams.

Defense :
Day
Smith
Schmidt
Russell
Collinsworth

Offense :
Martin
Koyack
McDaniel
Lombard
Brown

Why don't we just send the whole team out there for intimidation purposes

I expect Cam for sure. I think there'll be one OL... Martin or Lombard. And probably KVR on D. Maybe Collinsworth. Outside chance of Day or Schmidt.

Ishaq? Really?

No, not really. For intimidation. Tie cannon fuses in his dreads. Light them. Put war paint on his face. Blue and red would be good. Draw a skull on his face like the guy in Program. You want intimidating? That would be intimidating.

Teach the freshman like Nelson, Mokwuah, JWilliams, Blankenship, etc., so they can take over in years to come . . .

From what I have heard about the team, this group of 4 seems to make a lot of sense. Kelly has referenced that it is a young team with a lot of younger players needing to step up and be leaders. I am not a big fan of Schmidt or Collinsworth being captains. I think players gravitate towards talent more than experience/age. It is very hard for an average player to get in the face of a guy who is better than him. Jaylon sounds like a respected leader on top of likely being our best player.

You are a mad man alright! It's Trumbetti, not Nelson, or Edward Teach for that matter, who plays on the defensive side of the football.

I sounds like Sheldon Day stepped up in the off season to help motivate the defensive line to get better. He could be a captain, although he wasn't one of my first nominations. I'm sure KVR will still get a spot. After that probably Nick Martin on the OL or maybe Brown. Brindza is there too.

Aye! Then I have come to the right place!

Notice how in addition to having a deeper roster, we are getting more first off the bus guys. A little bit more of a hungry, surly attitude as well.

Sheldon said as much. In an interview I have heard that he feels he paid his dues, and learned the ropes. And that he wanted too much not to step out and lead. Also, I have heard he is a devastating three technique. His first step is fast, and with his hands (very violent), and great base it is difficult for a offensive lineman to get a piece of him (meaningful.)

Got to love leadership like this on a crummy day

After today, I'm going to say N Mart, Cam, and Brindza for captains, with Day as an alternate for one of those guys.
