From Eric Hanson chat regarding field turf:

Eric Hansen:
I think we will have an answer shortly. I plan to address that with Jack Swarbrick soon. They will have to either put in Field Turf or a new natural turf field for 2013, so you are correct about the timing.

OL question from Hanson's chat:

Comment From Al from Philly
Great to have you back, Eric. From the practices you've seen how will the right side of the O-line compare to last year?
1:46

Eric Hansen:
It could be better. Conor Hanratty is the key. Lombard at RT is a year, stronger, smarter better. Hanratty is a physical run blocker who will be tested in the passing game. I think Nick Martin at center is going to be better than a lot of people think. He is really making a good early impression. Thanks for being a part of this today, Al.

I swear Swarbirck already addressed this somewhere saying they were sticking with grass.

I will try and find an article or something.

What's the word with Mahone is he the next Jonas Gray?
2:14

Eric Hansen:
He's got an uphill climb to be Jonas. GA3,, Carlisle and Bryant are going to be ahead of him. Perhaps Cam McDaniel and Folston too. Jonas didn't blossom until late in his career, though, so who knows?

From that, sounds like Bryant is already ahead of Mahone and even Cam? Weird.

Comment From Jake
Eric, thanks for the answers. Chris Brown or Jarron Jones, who has a better sophomore season?
2:16

Eric Hansen:
Chris Brown.

More on BROWN:

Chris needs to show he can be physical, that he can block, that he can run routes besides the deep ones. In other words, he needs to be more complete, and he's working toward that end. He even turned down the opportunity to compete as a triple-jumper for the Irish track team to work on his football this spring. And he is a premier triple-jumper. This summer is very important to Chris Brown in terms of his place in the rotation next fall.

Eric, taking into consideration Amir's injury, is your money on Proise being the #1 slot to start the season?

Eric Hansen:
That's where I am leaning.

heard on sirius this morning that kelly has given all play calling duites to Martin for 2014...not sure if this has been discussed here or in another thread.

Yeah, I heard that too. I think I read it on BGI this weekend in a recap of Kelly's comments to the media. The BGI guys have also said that at practices this spring Kelly has not been so attached to the QBs and has been roaming a bit more to watch other position groups.

Interesting move re. Martin though. I guess Kelly just figures Martin has the offense down pat, so Kelly wants to focus on other areas? Special teams certainly requires a bit more oversight, just off the top of my head.

Martin called the majority of the plays last year. Not a huge move but shows you trust in Martin

Let me preface this with assuming you have gotten to see the team practice a few times this spring, but...

-How have Grace, Foxabrese, and Moore looked so far at ILB?

-Who are the early favorites to be the next 2 DE's in the rotation?

-Will the offensive line be as good as it was last season in your opinion?

Thanks!

Grace is going to add the speed to the corps. Manti didnt have the speed Grace has, so Grace will be able to get to spots and make up for his early mistakes. Fox didnt practice bc of his injury so he just runs in and out of drills. Carlo has been here 4 years, so you know what he is bringing to the table. MIoore is athletic, but was running with the 2's. It will be interesting to see how quick Deeb picks up the system bc there is PT there. Moore should e a leader on sp teams, but i dont really see him getting too much PT at this point.

I think that Springman, Day, Tuitt, Ishaq, Okwara, Shembo, Utopo are all going to get PT at DE. Its just a matter of what team ND is playing that week with who is in the 2 deep. They have a lot of pieces there that bring different things to the table.

Offensive line will be better than last year, easily. Nick Martin is already doing more than Cave did, and Hanratty will be adequate at guard. Stanley did some good things, and Z.Martin, Watt, Lombard are very good. I think they will get the physical play, but show their athleticism this year as well.

Why no Jones? Is he struggling?

He did well in goal-line. Everything else it looked like he was finding himself. Kinda like Ishaq his freshman year. He did somethings well, but I wouldnt expect him to get major mins just yet....kid has a bright future, but he has to get more physical and hold the point of attack a little better.

He isn't as physically imposing as you think we would be for a 6'6" guy who weighs 290. Honestly needs to get in better shape and hit the weights and keep learning in my opinion.

Don't we all, at some level?
Dude's still got four years of eligibility, right? I'd suspect he'll emerge.

I saw the B&G game is at 1:30pm, but I couldn't find if it was televised. Does anyone know if it will be and on what channel? NBC I presume?

Sorry I'm an idiot, but that's only available online, right?

It's an actual channel. Cox carries it as part of the extended digital package; dunno about Comcast. But you'll also be able to watch it through the NBCSports website.

I have Charter (Wisconsin), and it is in fact on NBCsports, which Charter carries.

That would be tremendous. I see the OL as the biggest question mark heading into next season.

Also, that's some tall praise for Martin. Cave wasn't exactly a weakness at center last year.

If NMart is "only" as good as Cave, he'll be in the top ten centers in the country [Braxton was number five rated draftable center this year]. I have never heard anything but good things about NMart.

ZMart, reflecting on his brother's progress, said that he has been happily surprised at how "naturally" Nick has taken to the Center position. He thinks that Nick has no anxieties about it at all. Of course big brother will take some of the burden off him by calling the defensive sets.

ZMart also said that Lombard is getting noticeably better, as he is stronger and "understands that he has to finish every play to the whistle". That sounds like Lombard either wasn't in as good physical shape as he could have been last season, or that he didn't have enough "killer instinct" {maybe too nice a guy}. ZMart, of course did not go into these specifics.

If our great LT is correct, then four of the five-fingered fist are in place. That leaves RG and Hanratty [or whomever]. I'm still a bit concerned about that [speed, nimbleness, power].... Fingers, all five for the fist, crossed for success at that spot.
