2013 Spring Practice Thread

Who would have thought, during the Weis Era, that Notre Dame would ever have two 1st-team All-American DLs in the same season?

It's about to happen.

Plus I'd say Shembo plays at a "1st-team all-conference" level, and Spond and Fox at a 2nd-team level. It's a damn fine front seven.

Buster or anyone else (a chara)

The two linemen you refer to a are obviously Tuitt and Nix; how is Day looking? Is he going to have a "last year for Tuitt" this year? I know he is going to get a lot of run-stopping assignments, but where is he at.

Can we catagorize the D-line as ahead of last year?

Can we catagorize the linebackers as ahead of last year?

Things I noticed..

- Lou just looks like 300+ lbs of steel... Expectations are through the roof.

- Like seeing Romeo taking reps off the edge. He's next level when it comes to versatility and athleticism. So he will get play time this year? Is he at DE or CAT more?

- Corey Robinson is already a monster freshman.. I can't imagine the freak he will be in a few years. So he will get play time this year?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Golson looks tremendous from the neck up this spring. I see several blowouts this year and a rematch vs Bama. Our d will be better this year than last year.

Any update on Spond?

Like you already know Bogsy, the staff loves experience (unconscious competence) and Diaco's 101/102/103/104 defensive teaching style. Romeo is still learning from Prince, Danny, Ben and Ishaq.. all 103/104 at their positions.

The fact that we have this athletic specimen 3 deep, learning CAT & DE is why we will have a defense even BETTER than last year. The whole D is deep, inexperienced to a certain degree, but deep.

I assume this year, we'll see him at DE in 3rd down, pin your ears back situations with a comfortable lead.

Apparently, Amir is impressing the hell out of his teammates too.. He's everything we're hoping for and more.

Re: Sheldon Day.

Coach Elston just said that they are completely delighted with him --- REALLY good football player [and Elston not being able to resist smiling as he said it]. Elston then said [as if addressing IE paranoids], that although Sheldon is a bit short vis-a-vis the crude measureables iconic DE, you have to measure his arm length, and then you find that he is extremely long armed, c. a seven-foot wingspan, so there is no issue there. [Ishaq, by the way, got a similar remark about "length" and keeping tackles off you]. And Elston reiterated what he and Kelly have said several times before: "NO ONE gets off blocks better than Sheldon Day".

Now let's add that up: great off-the-ball quickness, high motor, gets off blockers better than anyone on the team, plenty of power in a relatively lowslung 290 pound body ---- hmmmm.... add in a DLine coach smiling from ear-to-ear and I say: we have another lights-out DLineman.

Tuitt// Nix// Day: opposing Offensive coordinators, Who You Gonna Call?? Ballbusters!!

This folks is the Wrecking Crew.

Makes you wonder why wing span is virtually never measured at high school combines or reported by recruitniks. It's far more relevant to athletic potential than some other commonly reported stats.

This me thinks goeth a long way to show the slothful disregard and drunken mistake of the typical recruiting service, mayhaps?

An one for some Shakespeare?

Whiskey: I think that this is a general teaching moment for all of us. This bone-obvious fact [the value of knowing the wingspan, which all coaching staffs realize, while it almost never being reported by anyone publicly] must be attributable to the simple mental and habitual inertia that characterizes our inefficient species. "We've always done it this way, so, by jiminy, that's what we'll do!!"

We see this in all sorts of things in our lives, and one way to be "elite", creative, "ahead-of-the-curve" is to question the "always-done-it" guys and dump them when it's obvious that they don't make sense anymore. [Bench-pressing is another such "we always done it" thing.] Politics makes this almost impossible in the world of everyday living/ decision-making [believe me I was an environmentalist in younger years], but in sports this points the way to hurdling the competition: watch one of the rating services finally pick up on this, and find a way to get the measureable. For a year they'll be king.

For us as sports fans, it will increase our understanding of recruiting [how many times did we have to listen to posters say: why are we recruiting this guy? He's only 5'10"? ] I remember Al McGuire trying to explain this to a announcer twenty years ago. A University of Indiana basketball center's height was 7'0" but McGuire said: well, he's really not effectively that tall. See he has this unusually long neck and head, and so his arms aren't quite that long as well. The announcer, stone stupid, said: what do you mean? Seven foot is seven foot, isn't it?? McGuire gave up.

Smart guys succeed better than dumb guys usually. Our coaching staff is composed of REALLY smart guys. Thankfully they are coaching and not us --- especially some of us.

Wing span is definitely taken into consideration by recruiters. I went through the process and coaches were always thorough. They paid close attention to the obvious (height and weight) but they would also check my feet, hands, body thickness and wingspan. I actually had one coach pull me out of class to look at my feet, ankles and calves. He measured the peak of my calf and compared it to my ankle. Basically, the man came to give me a cankle test.

College coaches obviously consider it. We're wondering why the recruiting services don't report it. They publish height for every single prospect, but wing span is virtually impossible to find, despite it being far more relevant to athletic ability.

Gotcha...

They may not have access to the information. High school coaches and summer camps rarely, if ever, measure wing span (at least they didn't years ago). I'm not certain, but I think recruiting services rely on these two sources with regard to measurables.

That's very encouraging to hear! Not that I ever doubted him, comes from a pretty good pedigree!

The first thing I noticed is that not one defensive player had their hand on the ground. That will confuse the hell out of offensive lines
