pardon me if this is already in another thread but this is the most devastating preseason camp of injuries that i ever recall of a ND team.

We lose Austin Collingsworth for the season at a position we badly need depth at. Collingsworth i thought was going to break out this year and at worst be our #3 safety behind Slaughter and Motta.

We lose Alex Welch for the season. Welch was supposed to be a stud when we got him. This one was tough but with Eifert, Koyack, and Niklas it looks like we have the depth to overcome it.

Losing Lo Wood our starter at CB, the position that worries me the most. Even with Wood out there this year we still were going to be shaky. Now without him i envision an absolute mess. Teams exploited Gary Gray real bad last year and i don't think Gray was really that bad of a cornerback.

This doesn't even get into the fact that we "lost" Lynch and Sheppard and Prestwood has transfered out.

The schedule this year didn't scare me as much as it scared others, but now with the injuries is scares me a lot. I knew we'd get injuries and i know we'll get a lot more but this many this early??

Atleast Oklahoma is in worse shape than us. Their boys seem to be made out of glass

Losing Aaron Lynch and Tee and missing out on Greenberry was worse though, we had a rougher spring than summer IMO.

1). Collingsworth is a good player. On the other hand, we have two returning starters plus a load of back-up talent [Farley, Baratti --- recently praised highly by his coach ---, Hardy, McCarthy, Salvi, Badger] --- so much talent that we moved SHUMATE! We're powerful at safety.

2). Welch is a good player. We have three other All-Americans there.

3). Lo Wood is a good player. Russell is blowing the staff's minds at how fast he's developing, plus we have Brown, Atkinson, and Shumate--- SPEED CITY. They'll get it done if the front seven does what it can do.

4). Lynch was a very good player. We have two essential starters at the position plus Hounshell and the Day-of-Doom Monster. Diaco going Shembo and Williams "down" on passing downs, loads the talent up there even more.

5). Prestwood was a good player. He was second string. No matter how right guard sorts out, we will still be able to utilize Nick Martin at tackle if we have to and he is a violent mauler. In an unlikely pinch there stands superman Ronnie Stanley.

This litany indicates something as to why everyone needs to praise Coach. HE'S LOADED US UP. We're SO short-sighted. ANY break at all at quarterback and we're already riding two double-digit win seasons. AND, we play good football, really good football when we're not turning it over. I've been proud to watch those guys. They are in shape; they work hard all game; they're not intimidated by anyone... I don't want to add any more "deletions" from the roster, but what we've got will roll if Everett or Andrew does.

Well said Mike. Really excited to see our pass rush take some much needed pressure off the secondary

All true. Kelly's building depth, and that's huge.
But, still, we've lost five scholarship players since March (six if you count Tee), 3-4 of whom would've been regulars, without playing a game yet. I'd rather have them than not, because you only get 85 guys, and we're going to lose more, and a college football season is at least in part a war of attrition. Hopefully all this contact helps us stay healthy once the season gets going.

And, unlike Bama and the USC's of college footbal, ND doesn't replace those lost to attrition be it injury, academics, Res Life, or family tragedy with a 20 or 21 year old JUCO plug-in. ND will bring in an 18 year olds for the 2013 season.

Mike this is truly one of your best posts ever, and should be enshrined in the Bang Bang ND Game hall of fame. I mean the Irish Envy hall of fame. (Can we protect this so nobody steals it? Maybe wrap it in something.

Seriously. This is the transition from the past 18 years of whatever to Kelly's team, no doubt!

And lets turn this player shortage on end, your original points taken Mike. How are we worse off this year even with injuries? As of now we have about 60 to 65 players ready to play at a high level. Last year we had about 45 to 50. Kelly's first year 35 to 40; and before that? We still have more players that can play at a higher level, and the rest are on their way.

Eveybody forgot to list Tate and Danny. Either one of those are more valuable than a Prestwood.

While the injuries have been tough, it could be worse. I think Lo Wood is the most difficult injury to deal with. By all reports and the video I have seen from fall camp, Wood was playing very well and in the short term he will be tough to replace. However there are several talented guys who will be getting more reps with the first team now. I think at least one of them will step up and surprise us with their high level of play. As several of you have said the d-line is very strong even without Lynch and opposing qbs will not have much time to sit in the pocket...that will help the cornerbacks.

I mostly feel sorry for those injured guys and hope they come back 100% and ready to compete next spring.

Speaking of the D Backfield...

How the Irish got to where they are is a product injuries, Brian Kelly’s recruiting choices, and the roster management of Charlie Weis. Holes in the 2008 and 2009 recruiting classes, where the Irish only signed five total defensive backs and zero true corners, have come back to bite Notre Dame, with the situation only exacerbated by Banks and Boyd leaving the program and a rash of injuries.

This was the first time I've really had the opportunity to hear an interview with Neal. I must say he handled the questions very well and gave all the right answers. With the situation regarding his commitment, I'll admit that I didn't visualize him in that positive of a light if for nothing else from lack of information on the situation. But after seeing and hearing him speak, I think he's on his way to a great future at ND and becoming a solid young man.

Also, great smiles from Brown and Russell, those 2 just seem like they love life and are full of energy and intelligence. What fine young gentlemen these guys are!

I agree NDBoiler

Chris Brown better play. The team did look good, and our defense is intimidating.

I believe in time Chris will get his shot! No worries here!
