So sounds like he changed his mind on potentially committing this weekend, "if we checked all the boxes."

Spears isn’t ready to make a decision or completely narrow down his recruitment to a group of finalists. He has a commitment date set for Sept. 15, but we’ll see if that changes.

“There could be a change. This was a big visit for me,” said Spears. “I just have a lot to think about. Spots are going to fill up quickly here. I want to take my time with all of this, but I’m not sure I’ll need to wait until September the more I think about it.”

It will be really interesting to see how quick the DL spots fill up this year. Just seems like there are a ton of guys that are ND leans. Hunter seems to realize that.

They all know the economics of this class.

Spears
Smith
Briggs
Johnson

...they all can't join Lacey in this class.

I said it a long time ago, hard to believe ND is going to turn away quality DT's in '19 after what DT recruiting has looked like for the Irish in recent history.

Good problem to have.

DT, staff mentioned primarily 3T when going over scheme fit

Whoa, they must expect him to fill out a lot more. I'm assuming you want your DT/3Ts at least 290 and better if they are pushing passed 3 hundo.

Derp, just read he's already at 290. VDP likey.

This kid looks like a future 330lb OG. He's put on a ton of weight in the past year and it looks like OG weight.

162.

247 fully on the ND hate train.

Par for the course. 247's quality has deteriorating considerably over the past year, and it appears to be continue down that trend. Still like that I can see a composite score, but their standalone rankings continue to carry less and less weight when forming my own opinion. Still not as bad as their inexplicable 85 rating they gave Kenyatta Watson. I mean, really? Did they even watch the film? Even just a play or two?

As for Spears, there wasn't much film covering his Junior season and the bit that I could find, a lot of it is against a squad that is...SMALL. I mean, these guys look like middle-schoolers. That being said, he played in Texas 6A, not the highest class, but still pretty darn good competition overall.

His sophomore film though is VERY impressive to me. The guy is just a wrecking ball. Whatever is happening around him, it turns to complete havoc and the play is blown up. That's the kind of 3T we want next to Lacey. Two guys with appetites for destruction.

Do teams lobby recruiting services for their commits to get higher rankings/drop other teams’ recruits in the rankings? Given how goofy recruiting has become, I wouldn’t put it past Harbaugh or Meyer. But I’ve also never heard that that happens so I can’t understand why 247 would be biased against ND.

Probably not directly, but I certainly think they do indirectly. At the end of the day, these “analysts”, are fans of teams, conferences, coaches, etc., just like we are. It seems pretty obvious that gets in the way of their jobs on occasion.

Also, these guys are just not that diligent at their jobs. C’Bo is a good example of this. 247 hadn’t evaled him since some point during his Junior season. It’s hard to take them seriously when a guy with Tennessee and ND offers, is a big time talent in GA (pretty sure he made an all state team from one publication) , and he hasn’t been evaled in over 1 year. Loy had to literally request an eval from Barton Simmons, lol

Here he is sharing the cover of FNF Geaorgia with Trevor Lawrence.

Kenyatta Watson film left a lot to be desired. Was completely underwhelmed by it. If your film highlights show you getting dragged five yards after contact, I don’t want to see the lowlights.

Spears film wasn’t that revealing either.

Not trying to be negative, because I watched Phil J’s ranking drop like a stone after an unbelievable year/ career. So rankings are often arbitrary imo Except for the obvious stallions.

I think Spears is probably rated. He's gonna be damn good but he doesn't do anything specular to make him a top 100-150 guy. Being ranked the 290th best HS player in the country is still pretty damn strong. Plus he plays in Texas, I'll take it all day.

Got 2 more CB's today from Bill Greene & Bud Elliott.

Lead for 4 DT's w/ one already in the lockeroom.

If this plays out like it's heading at the moment, ND could get as much top end, DT talent in 2019 as they got from 2011-2017, might even have to throw 2018 in there to even it out.

That's amazing in both directions.

His HS is in suburban Dallas, not the best conference but decent teams that routinely dole D1 talent. School program has been rising last few years.
