Sort of a killjoy comment, but I don't pay any attention to this star stuff except to note that the utter freak five-stars probably ARE an athletic cut above the big majority of the time.

What I care about is that our staff thinks enough of an athlete that they offer him. What would REALLY be informative would be the "status" of these publicly stated offers. Can the offer be accepted at the present state of the recruiting year or not? Are there offers which are immediate takes and others (which we see exactly the same on the twitters) which are not? And which is which? That would tell me how MUCH the staff is impressed.

As far as the "stars" go, it's obvious even from the comments on this board, that the ratings services are terribly flawed, and so why put much stake in them vs the staff --- or in the fortunate case of one of our IErs living in the vicinity and seeing the athlete multiple times?

The ONLY value that I see in the ratings is a phony one: a few athletes are going to be swayed by which schools are highly rated. But highly rated on a bogus rating procedure is, well, bogus. (This is why we could use our commitments going to every "camp" possible and recruiting the heck out of everyone face-to-face.)

Agree, there really isn't any difference in being rated 87 vs. 90.

https://247sports.com/college/notre...ght-end-target-Luke-Deal-on-Tuesday-118236904

As previously reported at Irish Illustrated, Fighting Irish offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Chip Long will head to Greenwood, S.C., to see Emerald high school three-star tight end Luke Deal today.

The 6-5, 237-pounder is still looking closely at Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Clemson, Auburn and North Carolina State, as his commitment date of May 25 quickly approaches. This remains an extremely close race and it’s anyone’s guess as to which school truly leads at this point. According to the 247Sports Crystal Ball, there are 10 picks on Deal’s profile. Four picks are in favor of Clemson, another four are for Auburn, one is for Notre Dame and one if “cloudy”, which references a pick that was previously in for a program, but has now been changed essentially to “unknown.”

Notre Dame will be in to see Deal today, which comes one day after the Michigan staff stopped in to see him. Both schools will also return on May 24, just one day before he is scheduled to announce his commitment later this month.

Lol, he was given an 80 on ESPN this week. Then 247Sports proceeds to move him from a 90 to an 87. Like seriously, wtf is going on??? The exact same thing happened with Ajavon when he was about to commit to ND. I don’t get it.

Btw, Deal was just brought back to a 90 by 247sports. Must've been some user error on their part to go from 90 to 87 and back to 90 in a matter of a few weeks. Bizarre, but aside from all that nonsense, Deal would be a nice addition to a TE room and a great add from a TE board that's looking more and more unfriendly to ND these days. I think if ND doesn't land Deal they'd have to expand their board because of the uncommitted guys left that ND has offered, doesn't sound like they have much of a chance with most of them.

Agreed.....I do believe that Bama or OSU would achieve a higher recruiting ranking with ND's class just based on....well if Saban/Meyer think they are legit, who am I to argue.

Now it wouldn't be wildly different, but some guys would get slight bumps that they probably wouldn't with ND or any other P5 team.

Texas was and is still is getting the benefit of the doubt, a full decade after they stop recruiting great classes.

Well... Deal will be a high four star soon then. Bama offered him today. Don't think my Tide has any chance here however.

This is how I picture Bama's war room when they throw out these 11th hour offers:

Ha ha, certainly they use confirmed offers and strength of program as a part of the equation when evaluating talent but there isn't some conspiracy here. Recently good programs giving offers should carry weight in an evaluation.

I'm not too positive, but I think Wiltfong just put in a CB for Clemson after doing an article on Deal. I can't confirm 100% cause it could be a foggy CB. Regardless of the CB, ND did a knock-your-socks-off OV in mid-April, Chip Long visited him on May 15th, and is heading right back for a visit on May 24th before Deal decides on May 25th. So the staff is putting maximum effort into this one and hopefully ND comes out victorious, and if not, they'll keep searching for their TE prospect.

Wiltfong's CB was a foggy.

Gotcha. I think it’s been mentioned before but the kid probably isn’t positive as to where he’s going yet or he’s been really good at keeping it close to the vest. Clemson seems to have the best shot but maybe already having a TE commit isn’t helping, or something else. Hopefully ND’s continued hard pursuit will help get this to swing to the good guys.

Long will be in to see him on May 24th, with his decision scheduled for May 25th. Loy seems pretty confident that Coach Long can get this done.

Wiltfong is going around to the Auburn, Michigan, NC State and Notre Dame boards saying more or less the same thing: Deal doesn't know yet where he's going, and it could easily be one of those schools. No mention of Clemson, but I think that's implied.

He originally left off NC State, but then came back to the Irish thread to mention them. Which reading between the lines might mean they're running in fifth.

Didn't realize that Luke had a lot of connections to Michigan. I'm sure that McNamara is negative recruiting the crap out of us too.
https://www.landof10.com/michigan/michigan-football-recruiting-luke-deal-cade-mcnamara-commitment-date

Greenwood (S.C.) Emerald 2019 4-star tight end Luke Deal will commit on May 25 and is seriously considering Michigan.

Along with the Wolverines, Deal is looking at Notre Dame, Clemson, Auburn, N.C. State and Ohio State.

“I will pick the place that feels like home and that I feel will develop me spiritually, academically and athletically,” he said.

Deal will announce his commitment on Twitter.

The tight end has taken official visits to Michigan (April 13), Notre Dame (April 16), Ohio State (April 20) and Auburn (April 27).

“Our expectations coming in were high but everything was better than expected,” Deal said after his official visit to Michigan. “We toured everything and got a lot of chances to meet new people. There were about eight other official visitors there with me, which was really cool because I had the opportunity to hang with the guys. That was one of the highlights of the visit.”

Deal said he believes in faith, family and football. He will only select a school that holds the same beliefs as him. Since Deal has been recruited by Michigan, he has grown close to coach Jim Harbaugh, tight ends coach Sherrone Moore and passing game coordinator Pep Hamilton.

“Coach Harbaugh, Coach Moore and Coach Hamilton all have similar traits as coaches,” Deal said. “If the staff believes in what I believe in, then it’ll be a good fit. [Michigan] definitely fits that mold.”

Cade McNamara now is making it a priority to recruit Deal, whose May 25 commitment date means the Reno (Nev.) Damonte Ranch 4-star quarterback commit is working with limited time.

“I’m not going to force anyone to do anything,” McNamara said. “I just share my recruiting experiences and why I believe Michigan is the best place in the country.”

Deal will graduate from high school in December and enroll early at the university of his choice. McNamara will do the same at Michigan.

“No doubt, my man Cade McNamara,” Deal said of the player pushing him to the Wolverines the hardest.

“I’m confident (it’s Michigan),” McNamara said. “Luke and I have become good friends over the course of this process.”

Along with Deal having a long-distance friend in McNamara, Deal’s mother was born in Detroit and his grandfather grew up in Milan, Mich. Most of the family members on his mom’s side of the family are Michigan fans.

Deal’s grandfather, Dennis Quackenboss, wrote a letter to Harbaugh after his grandson received interest from Ohio State. The letter earned Deal an offer.

“I told my grandpa (about Ohio State) because everyone from my mom’s side of the family is huge Michigan fans. My grandpa grew up 10 minutes away from the stadium and was really upset when he heard Ohio State was interested.

“He was being silly about saying he would write a letter to Harbaugh. Turns out, Harbaugh read my grandpa’s letter and they watched my film. They loved it and offered me the next night.”

Since Harbaugh’s team took two tight ends in the 2018 class — Missouri City (Texas) Ridge Point 4-star prospect Mustapha Muhammad and Hamden Hall (Conn.) 3-star recruit Luke Schoonmaker — it is expected Michigan will take only one in 2019, which could end up being Deal.

The 4-star prospect is ranked No. 245 in the 2019 class, according to 247Sports. He is the ninth-best tight end and the No. 3-ranked player in South Carolina.

Bad.

Any HS TE that thinks 3 years is an option is...

In his defense, a lot of high school recruits say this. Can't blame them that their NFL aspirations are in mind. At the same time though, I'd rather them not say "3-4 years"; unless you're a sure fire 1st round pick, get that degree because crazy things happen.

Since neither Loy or Sinclair picked Deal as the next commit, should we not expect a commit from him today?

The ever optimistic Loy said on the II podcast he’s leaning more and more towards Auburn as things stand but also said it’s hard to tell. Haven’t seen much CB movement for Deal so analysts don’t seem to know. Very curious.

That’s my guess to. Just don’t see him surprising everyone and picking ND. Hope I’m wrong

If the rumors of ND vs. Auburn are true I will say that out of the last 9 cycles of Official Visitors, only one guy has ever visited ND and picked Auburn, Noah Igbinoghene. And he lived 2 hours away and was always an Auburn lean. I’m genuinely curious who was the last guy ND really really wanted and went head to head for against Auburn and lost. Dexter Williams was a head to head win. I don’t think the two schools go head to head for recruit much. Just wanted to know people’s thoughts??

IIRC, Braden wanted to play tackle in college. Hiestand (and every other team) told him that his best position is guard. The only team that didn't? Auburn, where he spent his 4 years playing...guard.

And of course, he was drafted in the 2nd round by the Colts to play the other guard spot from Q.
