I think the reason Marist plays and not Kiser is due to Marist ability to take on and blow up a RB/Linemen. He doesn't make the tackle almost every but he disrupts the play. This allows us to slow down or handle most running games with only 6 linemen/lbs and be in nickel almost 100% of the time.

My big issue with Marist is when he messes up, it really is bad. Ohio State TD run, one of the Louisville TD Runs, Clemson TD run. There were other issues in all 3 of those runs (BROWN), but Marist was the first line of defense on 2 of the 3 big td runs.

When Kiser is in, you see very assignment correct but more consistent gains by the opposing offense run game. Golden wants to get the opposition into a lot of 3rd and longs at the risk of marist/brown mistakes and giving up some big plays.

No argument. "Assignment correct" should be a fixed cost in year 2. The ball boy can figure out how to he assignment correct but doesn't mean he should play. Like you said, Marist can actually cause problems for the offense.

You aren't going to have a 215 lb mike or will he's too small to play inside. His asset is his speed on the outside. Not saying kiser is great he isn't but the reason he isn't playing as many snaps isn't to do with him being better on worse then marist it's they playing a completely different position. Marist is like 240 and is a blitz heavy will

All three of these guys are good players --- big parts of why our defense was so good --- we were good at all levels (admittedly the DBackfield was elite, but Golden doesn't shut down almost everybody with punk linebackers.) As to choice: if forced, I pick Bertrand. He makes the occasional thumper-destroyer play more. Liafau I believe is used by Golden to create a different kind of havoc which forces offenses to try to go elsewhere --- this also has big value in terms of control. Kiser is also good, just the wrong guy for the nickel look, but could do it if the others weren't available. None of these guys is Harrison Smith by a long shot --- we're talking werewolf instincts, blazing real-game speed, and NFL Hall of Fame. (and yes, until his senior year, IE morons ragged on him every chance they got.)

I assume that's his point, why would you bring Kiser back then if it's a position we don't utilize that much because he doesn't have the skill set to be on the field like say WU or maybe Pace from Cinci. Unless he can fill in for betrand.

The top three Notre Dame players on defense in 2023, per @PFF grades (min. 20 snaps)...

  1. LB Jack Kiser (90.2)
  2. DT Howard Cross III (87.8)
  3. CB Cam Hart (83.3)

You still don't want Kiser to come back, @Lberry ?
By far the last of the 3 I'd want back. There needs to be a PFF thread explaining how it's a worthless "metric". I did it once at length, with examples but I'm not doing it again lol.

Unless you're a OL or pointing out bad play, PFF is garbage.

That begs the question then, which is worse: PFF evaluations, or your game film evaluations?

Cranked out 20 reps of 225 in a boot. Won't be partaking in the rest until pro day I would assume.
The LBs went through the combine drills yesterday, so yeah, he won't be doing the rest until pro day. He hung out in sweats with the rest of the LBs including Marist while they went through drills.

By the way, besides doing the on-field drills, the only production drill Marist participated in was the 40 where he got the 10th best time (4.64) and tied for 5th in the 10-second split. I don't know why he didn't do the broad, vert, cones, etc. but I imagine he'll do some of those with JD on pro day as well. He looked really good in the on-field drills.

When did he get hurt? What is his injury?

It's only being reported as an "undisclosed" injury. Yesterday, the guys on the II podcast speculated that they think he is planning to put all his energy into running a good 40 at ND's pro day like Tranquil did several years ago, so they don't think his injury is serious.

Should be noted Marist was 10th of 18 who ran. Ten guys did not run including most of the top guys.

I wouldn't say most of the top guys didn't run. It was the majority of top guys did run the 40 and minority did not run...because they are probably hiding their lack of speed and will run on a fast track at their pro day. Off the top of my head top guys who did not run were Trotter, Eichenberg and Steal Chambers. The latter two Marist is rated higher on most draft boarders And Junior Colson, who is injured and didn't participate in any drills.

JD tore his plantar fascia during senior bowl prep. He discussed it on the radio with NFL network during his intake.
