We're coming in below 85 again and now everybody is going to act like we're too good to take this kid?

Are we actually coming in below 85 though? We’re currently at 82-83 before signing day with a good chance to land Flemister, Eason, Patterson, Brown, and Keys. We also have a puncher’s chance with NPF. Add in a grad transfer or two in the off-season and CJ Holmes’ outside shot of returning and I’d say this is the best shape we’ve been in manpower-wise in the Kelly era:

^^^Saw his "VIP" pick. CB's showing 50/50 so that was my assumption. They still have work to do to really keep those VIP lol.

It's funny how different his film looks if you think of him as a DT instead of a pass rushing DE. Looks really athletic for the size.

Also, it seems like we run a lot of 3-4ish looks, with a big run-stopping DE. He could do that too.

From a depth standpoint, SDE is the position group that has depth concerns. Next year we have J. Hayes/Kareem/Ade O. In 2019, we'll only have Kareem/Ade O. Where as, WDE in 18' has Hayes/Okwara/Wardlow/Justin A. In 19' it would be the exact same. Now maybe Justin A eventually grows out of WDE, but it doesn't sound like that is the plan. IMO, I'd bet they at least try and get him on the Daelin Hayes plan, and lean him up.

So, I've always thought that from a "need" standpoint, SDE was a bigger priority. And like you mentioned, the staff does have the propensity to play "big ends", on early downs. This is partially why I likened him to Jay Hayes a couple days ago. Might not bring a significant pass rush presence, but I could see him being useful in the run game. If you put Eason with Joseph Anderson in back to back classes, it gives you some flexibility, and Eason becomes a solid #2.

Now ideally, you would have a SDE end that can do both, which I think Kareem is on his way to becoming, and Joseph Anderson will be as well. But that's just not in the cards this cycle and this is better than nothing.

Well said Luckylucci, we have for the 2018 season

SDE
RS SR Jay Hayes
JR Khalid Kareem
RS SO Ade Ogundeji

DT
RS SR Jonathan Bonner
RS SR Dan Cage (Likely his career is over)
SR Jerry Tillery
RS JR Micah Dew-Treadway
SO Myron T-Amosa
SO Kurt Hinish
RS FR Darnell Ewell
FR Jayson Ademilola
FR Ja'Mion Franklin

WDE
JR Daelin Hayes
JR Julian Okwara
JR Jamir Jones (If he does get moved to DL)
RS FR Kofi Wardlow
FR Justin Ademilola

Definitely from seeing the depth chart SDE is more the short term need for depth purposes. You can redshirt Eason with the proper depth and develop him over several years. I'd say taking him would be a smart move.

I picture Justin A. at SDE, personally. I wonder if a slimmed down Hinish could play there?

Also - and I know about all the ‘19s - an extra body at DT wouldnt be all bad going forward.
It looks fat right now but the top four guys on that list are all gone after ‘18, leaving MTA as the only proven player (at this moment in time) with the rest filed under “potential.” If all goes well, we’re fine, but given injuries, attrition, potential position changes, I see no reason not to take Eason and see what develops.

All the serious interest from 4 star '19 d-lineman probably has something to do with that.

The interest from 2019 prospects is great, but they're not at ND and many of them won't sign with ND. It happens every year. Can't pass on a decent prospect because we have a 20% chance of landing someone next year.

I understand the point you are trying make and agree with it, kind of. However, how the heck did you arrive at that percentage?

I made it up. We get excited and irrationally assume all of these 2019 DL kids are going to be Irish when in reality we know that isn't going to happen. We've all seen it before. I'd rather take Eason now than pass because some kid, who is a year away from signing, is interested in ND. Besides, we're not turning down some elite 4/5 star next year because we signed this guy.

I didn't think he was a fit so not a big deal imo.

But just another typical Kelly NSD.
